  1. I was wrongly advised on this forum as well as well as by a travel agent that I would get 30 days in Mae Sai

But it was not the case. It's true you can go there one time but not after an extension at immigration.

You cannot come into the country get 30 at the airport or border then get 30 at immigration and then expect to get another 30 at Mae Sai. This is absolute. I don't blame anyone for the wrong advise because I don't think anyone knows for sure what's going on even immigration lawyers have wrong information on their websites.

  2. I heard someone say they thought insisting on giving the sample at the station would slow them down- not worth the trouble for them.

I'm not paying a damned fine to this corrupt system

I'd rather spend my night in jail.

But all things being equal, I'd prefer not to.

What's the best way to handle this?

Simply refuse to give the sample what can they do since you have done nothing wrong that is a huge human rights violation.
  3. I wouldn't be so sure about Mae Sai. Just been up there today to activate the final entry on our multiple entry tourist visas. We had no problems at all, but the couple in front of us (European, but not sure exactly where from), were not allowed to exit Thailand. They told us they had tried earlier in the day to no avail and were now trying again, but again with no success as it turned out. They got pretty irate unfortunately, so the IO told them to go away. We understood they had entered as visa exempt originally, and were trying to get another 30 days. Before telling them to go away, the IO told them to go to CM immigration office on Monday. The new signs up at Mae Sai make it pretty clear that exit and re- entry without a visa of any sort is not allowed. If anyone else's experience is different, please let the OP know.

It could be their country also, a visa runner service called their contact at Mae Sai immigration about me (USA) they said I would get 30 days but even still you never know who or what you cann trust until you actually go annd find out for yourself.

How were these Europeans expecting a second 30 day V exemption at a land crossing anyway? IO was correct to send them away. Your post implies he/she was in some way intentionally making things difficult. I assume when the Europeans get to Chiang Mai Immigration they also won't have the required documents, photos, onward travel proof, hotel booking or fee either. And then they will post how bad Chiang Mai Immigration is and round and round we go...

And who are you say what is correct?

Why should they not expect it when its been a tradition for the past 15 or more years and now suddenly there is so much confusion and complete lack of any uniform policy. I used to be an expert on visa rules for tourists and now I am very confused about it. There is abbsolutely no need for showing cash, hotel bookings, or airline tickets at Chiangmai Immigration all thats needed is the tm7 form 1900 baht and a picture.

Your hostility only adds to the misinformation and paranoia but but I suppose that is your intension.

  5. Just came back to Chiangmmai after three months in Nepal via Malaysia. I was advvised in Penang that I probbably could nnot get any more TVs until I went back to my ownn ccounntry so came up on the train and had no difficulty at all to get 30 days and then got 30 more at chianngmai immigration.

Now my time will expire december 26 and I need to be here until ennd of January so how can i get just 30 more days the ccheapest and easiest way?

Mai sai is nno longer an option due to many previous stamps?

    Another train fromm Mmalaysia?

A flight from kl to Chiangmai? Any nnegative reports from Chiangmai airport?

If I have ongoing plane ticket?

    Thanhks for any suggestionns!

  6. Worthless publicity stunt since the india visa on arrival is good only for 30 days and most likely cannot be extended! Who the hell goes to India for 30 days? It takes that long just to settle in and get used to it.

They are obviously not interested in backpackers and spiritual seekers who need the full six.

Now they will cry to Obama " you please reciprocate and give us visa on arrival to usa!

  7. I got a private mail box in Las vegas which does the same service.

When you apply for SS you can move back to US to apply and then once its set up you can move back to Thailand without notifying them of the address change just change your residence to the private mailbox address or a friends address in case they send you any mail.

No reason for them to know where you are if you die the US embassy will be notified wherever you are anyway.

If its not a headache to be in touch with them every year then do it that way but for my mom it would never have worked so she did it with US address and it worked fine until she died.

I dont think you can be penalized for not telling them where you are but if you think so then thats your responsibility to find out.

  8. Ok to all of you who are still paranoid and uncertain I just did it and all I can tell you is when you go through on the train they process about ten passengers per minute. They dont have time to look nor seem to even care about the contents of your passport or whether you have a return ticket. They just run it into the computer stamp it and hand it back to you with a smile. Assuming the train is full and it usually is Im sure it will be the same for you.

To answer why I did not get a visa because Penang has stopped giving tourist visas if after the third one you did not go back to your home country. Thats what they told me at Banana guest house but you could try your luck at the embassy or with some of the other agents.
