  1. My 1 year car driver's licence expires soon.

I have been told that, as a result of some recent changes in the rules, for renewing a licence you now need to watch a 1 hour video on motoring rules, and then do a multiple choice test. This is in addition to having to do the reaction, depth, peripheral vision tests again.

Is this true? as I was told last year when I got my 1 year licence, that renewing it and obtaining the 5 year licence would be a breeze, without no tests required.

Not true. Just got my 5 year licence from the 1 year one at Pattaya. Provide the documents at the desk, get a number, go to desk 2 when signalled, pay 605 baht, wait again, get photo taken, wait a little more, get new licence. Total time about 30 to 40 minutes - painless, no tests etc.

  2. I received my first 5 year car licence last week in Pattaya and my experience was a little different. Line up to get documents checked and get a number. Go to desk 2 when number flashed, give documents and pay 605 baht. Sit down and wait for your name to be called by lady at desk behind desk 2. Photo taken and sit down again. Same lady calls you, pay another 10 baht and receive licence. Whole process about 30 minutes. I had done all the tests last year to receive my 1 year licence.

  3. I have the Garmin Nuvo 770 bought in Canada and preloaded with the North American maps and Europe maps. Does anyone know where in Pattaya I can get the Thailand map loaded? Thanks.

  4. I own a condo unit in my own name. The annual mtce fee is low, so whenever a major renovation is required each unit is charged a certain amount. I have no problem with that. However I strongly suspect the Juristic person is overcharging considerably and personally pocketing the extra. We do not have a Residents Committee. Should I ask to see the expense bills before paying, should I go see a lawyer or does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

  5. Knew I was gay at 14, in 1959 in the UK. Kept it to myself as the atmosphere then was very hostile to gay people. You were labelled as sick and perverted etc. Also I had no one of the same ilk to talk to. Drifted through life pretending to be straight and dating girls but no sex. At age of 39 and still a virgin (yes, really!), I said to myself life begins at 40, so lets do something about it. Had my first sexual experience with a young Chinese man - just wonderful. Since then I have had 2 previous relationships, and now am in a 8 year relationship with a Thai man.

  6. I went to Jomtien this afternoon for my first retirement extension.

Provided original Embassy letter for proof of income which I got last year for first retirement visa, and it was accepted.

    Copies of relevant passport pages.

Letter from Bank and copies of first and updated last page of Bankbook.

Completed TM7 form with 1 photo.

Procedure same as JohnC, and no ATM or credit cards asked for. Also no health certificate required.

In and out within 10 minutes and a very pleasant experience. Pick up passport tomorrow afternoon.

I was dressed in a short sleeved dress shirt and long dress pants and dress shoes.

  7. I got my first retirement visa last year and its up for renewal in May. Jomtien Immigration took a copy of my proof of income letter and I kept the original. At my last 90 day reporting, I specifically spoke with the lady Captain and she said this same original letter would be accepted. However I will be going early just in case I need to get a new letter. As an aside, I dress in a proper shirt and long pants etc and am courteous and respectful.

  8. You are allowed 200 cigarettes and 1 litre of liquor duty free. With cigarettes however, you have to be careful. I am a non-smoker and last year I purchased 200 cigs for a friend from Don Muang Airport duty free shop, but I was still charged duty on arrival in Toronto. They explained about a certain stamp has to be on the package.

And yes it is easier to get a visa to Canada than the US.

I repeat, as a Canadian, that it is definitely NOT any easier getting a Tourist Visa to Canada. I know quite a few Canadians that have tried unsuccessfully to get their bf's tourist visas, and some of these Thais had good jobs, money in bank etc. The visa officer's decision is entirely discretionary and no reason for denial has to be given.

  10. I cannot understand why IJWT thinks its easier to get a tourist visa to Canada than the US. Its just as difficult as the same principles apply. It has nothing to do with being gay or straight. However, for a Permanent Resident visa, its not as difficult as long as you prove a relationship. Even then, it took over 2 years for my bf to get his PR visa to Canada.

  11. The owners of the condo building where I have my unit are letting the general maintenance of the building deteriorate. The swimming pool is not available due to repairs not being done and the outside of the building looks very bad because it has not been repainted. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do?
