  1. Renewed about 4 months ago, 1 year to 5 year for both car and bike.

Only needed 1 orig and copies for other application. It is possible to renew before the expiry no problem (i renewed about 3 weeks before expiry). Had to do the brake reaction test and colour blindness test only.

The rules change quite regular because when I first applied for 1-year licence I used my yellow book as proof of residency / address. When I went back for 5-year they wouldn't accept yellow book and wanted immigration certificate. They don't seem to like it if you have everything correct !!

Where you at the Phuket transport office?

Was at the office in Phuket Town that does driving licences. If that is called Phuket Transport Office then yes I was. Its the building at the far right corner next to the driving test track.

Thanks for that. I will give it a try with copies. I hope it works because if you have to go back and get a second original it is another day lost.

Can I ask you to list exactly what documents you presented with your application to renew from 1 year to 5 year.

    Thanks in advance.

No problem, I make a note whenever i do a application / renewal. I took yellow book orig and copies which were not accepted, so nipped straight over to immigration for cert of residence and then straight back to DL place.

    This time it was:

Certificate of Residence (orig + 1 copy)

Medical Certificate (orig + 1 copy)

Passport photo page (2 copy) - Took orig in case

Passport Visa page (2 copy) - Took orig in case

Passport immigration card (2 copy) - Took orig in case

Copy Old Driving Licences - orig they return to you if renewing early.

Best to have them all separated in two nice stacks for them so they can just clip the app form to them.

  4. Ended up in Churasco Steak House in JungCeylon. Decent steak but not cheap. Had Wagyu and NZ Angus on the menu.

Bit of a tourist trap but didn't fancy the long drive South.

  5. We get it occasionally (once or twice a year) and to solve it we flush a small box of the powdered poop eating bacteria down the toilet.

More bacteria in the septic tank seems to equal less odours. Can buy the box of stuff in Home Pro for about 20 baht.

  6. For Mexican, I would check out any of the stuff Big Bills stock at the Deli Market. It’s better than any of the Mexican I have had in Thailand. Ribs? Let us know, I would love some good ribs, South Carolina style, but will settle for anything good.

BTW, I’m not related to Bill.

Gonna go to BBQ hut tonight so will report how the ribs are tomorrow, but they always used to be good there.

Well, food was decent enough, enjoyed the full rack of baby back ribs although a little bit on the dry side but the bbq sauce was good. Nachos with all the trimmings were nice. Only problem was the noise from the busy road.

  8. Got a craving for some mexican food and bbq ribs. There used to be a place called BBQ Hut which was on 200 Pee Road near the south end, then they moved further north on 200 Pee road near Sai Nm Yen intersection. This place seems to have closed now. Does anyone know if they have moved and re-opened somewhere else? I seem to remember a post which says there is a place opposite the old safari club going towards karon but cannot find it.

  9. Since they changed their entry / exit configuration a couple of weeks ago the problem in Jungceylon has become a lot worse. Why they don't use 2 exits I don't know. Yesterday it took me 20 minutes to get out the garage even though 'luckily' i'd parked pretty close to the exit point. It must have been taking those at the other side of the garage a lot lot longer.

Unfortunately it's only going to get worse as the high season progresses. This was one place I used to like to park if I visited Patong but seems everyone has the same idea now and I imagine the central fiasco is making more people use Jungceylon exacerbating the problem. Not many alternatives though so in future it will have to be in and out before lunchtime.

  10. Got the rope lights at Keehin. They had everything I needed. Took only 10 minutes to gather up the bits, but took 20 minutes just to pay for the items. 2 girls working check out. 4 sitting around chit chatting. The check out girl had to manually type in stock numbers, descriptions, prices and other pertinent data, while her barcode reader sat on the table unused. Then she had to take it to another girl for approval or something and then finally took my baht and gave me change while an ancient serial dot matrix printer took forever to print a receipt. Glad I don't shop there often. Too frustrating.

Same here. I only ever buy there if thats the only place that has the stuff I need as the checkout winds me up big time. On a couple of occasions I've just left the stuff on the counter and walked out. Its a shame because they have a great selection and reasonably priced stuff.

The girls just sit there, they don't acknowledge the customer and its a free for all for who gets served first. Very frustrating.

  11. As the title says, I've got a couple of half full tanks that need filling. Any recommendations for a shop that will fill for private customer for a decent price (Kathu / Patong area) ? The tanks are within inspection dates.

I remember the place on Sansabai used to do it but out of touch with the dive community a bit recently.

  12. i just got back from central and it wasn't that bad, and yes, the circle was bad going north. they really need to have police directing traffic there all the time.

Is this a serious idea or a joke?

When the police control the traffic at Chalong Circle the traffic backs up further than when they are not there. Roundabouts are not designed to let one lane through at a time, hence the disastrous traffic lights lasting only one day.

I honestly believe that with one or two exceptions, such as near schools, police directing traffic and controlling traffic lights manually is a total waste of resource.

There again, I suppose it takes them away from the extortion business for a few hours a day.

serious, i've been across chalong circle 100s of times (maybe thousands) and i think the police directing traffic helps. yes, the lines can back up but they clear pretty quick when the police open up a path. better than a free for all where no one moves anywhere.

also, police manually controlling lights would help a lot on the main intersections near town. they can switch the lights when the side sois don't have enough cars and give more time to the main roads.

Agree, manual operation work in well in major intersections but...

If they adopted the use of road sensors (in the tarmac) on the traffic light setup then this would also alleviate soi's been on green too long when no cars are there and give extra time to soi's have more. Traffic lights which are only timed are not very efficient. Mind you, getting traffic lights to work well also require lots of traffic study, something I doubt is done here.

  13. Not cheap but the Christmas buffet at Indigo Pearl has always been superb. Unlimited food and free flow wine and Belgian beer make it decent value despite the price.

    "despite the price", which is....?

Not going this year as we're celebrating at home so not totally sure but think in previous years it was around 2000 per adult (can't remember the child rate but they did have a good set up of food and entertainment for the kids).

Sounds pretty good, so probably going to give this one a try. I've attached the menu and prices if any others are interested (and if I'm allowed to do so?). Its only once a year so a little extravagance required.
