  1. As far as transportation goes I was planning to use just public transport at least till I get to know the place better. Scooters scare the hell out of me and I have no plans on renting or buying one. In fact I would like to avoid driving there completely if possible so I'm guessing Bangkok might be my best bet.

Come to Pattaya then. The town is fairly small and compact. If you live centrally you walk to most places in 30 minutes and there is a very good public transport system (baht bus) for 10 baht a trip. People will say it's more expensive here but i'm not sure that's the case. Only if you party and drink, most normal costs are the same all over Thailand.

Used to be a quite good advice. but no longer.

The miserable traffic jam here makes it no better than BKK now

  2. The massage girl would get either 1 or 50 baht, depending how badly i want her next time.

I would make a deal with the caddy beforehand, how much his/her wage will be,

unless the caddy is included in the fee.

Obviously i won't tip a waitress, lest she does something not related to bringing me the beer/food i'm expected to pay.

Think about it for a second: You order a beer, lest that beer is handed to you,

there isnt anything to pay for, so they have to bring that beer, or i didnt get what i ordered,

and i get me beer elsewhere.

  3. I havn't had an insurance during my 10 years here,

i was looking into it but it's cheaper to pay if and when i want. (obviously,

insurance companies arent charity organizations, they charge more than they pay, to make a profit, and then sill can find a reason not to pay)

If i want something done i'll go to queen sirikit hospital.

btw you ca get a room with air con for 5000 in central pattaya as well.

  4. Going to school twice a week 2 hours per lesson as in ED visa is the best way

for someone below 50 to get valid 1 year visa. (30.000 baht/year)

Coincidentally it also takes care of your other woe, getting to know people,

and even makes you learn thai.

I think most americans i know have less than 49.000 per month,

while at the same time being older than you and so brads cost them more than it cost you
