Nonsense, it is not the first global pandemic, it wont be the last.. History tells us it dies out, we survive and move on,, you have a very doom and gloom attitude, history is the best teacher,, except for you obviously.????
Doom and gloom, nah, I'm ok, going for a walk soon and may pop into the pub for a couple. Also setup Ableton Live 10 on my laptop to start producing some music, techno and trance probably maybe some progressive house too.

As I said, i understand that. you may know a few but you are still there and Pattaya is dying so there is nowhere near enough of you to support a cities economy. It has not grown and thrived as "Snoozeville by the sea" for old duffers, it has been a party city for decades.
PMSL "Snoozeville by the sea" for old duffers ????????
Yes 100% correct, you go to Pattaya for booze, beach, birds and bonking! There never was much to do apart from those things, damn good too, but I always found BKK more entertaining.

Yes all true. Mega profits for drug companies but it will stop the virus, quite important point that considering what it has done to the global economies. i still think Pattaya will not recover quickly though because it is already the city of "for sale" signs. No business person keeps flogging a dead horse forever so all the great things about Pattaya with small independent restaurants, shops etc will be gone.
It won't eliminate the virus, just control it better like the flu vaccines. People seem think a vaccine is the cure and all of this ends, then it goes back to normal, too late for that.

Actually it is not developed and tested in less than 1 year. The vaccine has been in development for about 5 years, the accelerated bit is the adjusting for it to specifically target COVID, do a bit of research. To develop a brand new vaccine in 1 year is impossible. So, my view is you would be stupid not to take it. I guess it's up to you..
Depends if covid-19 is likely to affect you or not, same as the flu jab. I'm sure entry into some countries if all not countries will require a covid-19 jab, it won't be a mandatory vaccine just encouraged. Free for under 16s and over 75s and certain health conditions, everyone pay for it and mega profits.

1 minute ago, KarenBravo said:The vast majority of true tourists stay no longer than a couple of weeks.
A true tourist doesn't need a visa as they can either get a visa exempt entry, or, a visa-on-arrival.
These give you thirty days and are extendable. More than ample time for the type of tourists the government want.
Why then is it that some posters are advocating easing the existing visa regulations?
Could it be that they're conflating what's good for Thailand and what's good for themselves?
That was pre covid, 2 week quarantine will make 30 day exempt or VOA useless.

That is true, at the moment they have their country back, but the realisation will sink in that things are not going to improve and then the people will get angry.

in the end, I assume a different scenario:
- all small businesses and small hotels gone
- only international hotel chains and hotels of the “big families” survive
- the diverse style of Pattaya (and Phuket) is converted to an “All-inclusive paradise”
... similar to what happened in the Dominican Republic years ago ...
Yes, the likely scenario, the one's with the deepest pockets will survive. A lot smaller hotels and bars will go bust in European resorts depending on whether that country has quarantine restrictions imposed of them, but at least in Europe it's open unlike Asia.

Nonsense. Tourism was booming pre-covid--just not, as you say, the 'tourism as we once knew it'. Meaning, western tourism. And, apparently western tourism is the only tourism that actually counts as tourism with some posters. But, even if western tourism was somewhat in decline, it was easily made up for, and then some, by the huge numbers of Asian tourists, and not just the Chinese.
You are right, though, that some businesses in oversupply catering solely to western tourists likely were failing--supply and demand sorting things out. A western bar closes and two Asian karaoke bars open. Never mind the two new business openings catering to Asians; only the western bar closing is noticed, which is then immediately interpreted as tourism dying.
73.98% from Asian countries not inc India, 78.36% inc India. And all of those countries are locked in. China being the biggest with 57.48% and they are definitely not going anywhere for a long time.

Businesses go bust. Why doesn’t the government go bust?
Doesn't do big bail outs like other major economies do and Thailand is 22 in the world for GDP, so it should be doing more.

Once it gets cold again, around Nov-Dec., many will return to Thailand for all the reasons that have brought tourists here for years. Warm winters and friendly people. Most of the world cannot walk down the beach in the winter and enjoy the sunshine.
With or without quarantine? Huge numbers won't be coming with 2 week quarantine involved and the Thai government doesn't want foreigners coming and infecting them.

A few unrelated and possibly unproven cases is hardly 'everyone' but OK -- I get your point.
Vlad has a track record of poisoning enemies, so any vaccine coming out of Russia needs scrutiny and extensive testing, same applies to all of the other vaccines being developed.

Late next year I would expect tourism to start up again. 2023 could be a boom year as people try to enjoy social and travel life again (??)
Travel in Europe is already up and running, restrictions come in and go again. Germany is testing on arrival and it looks like the UK will soon start doing this. The travel and tourism industry is too important in Europe to let it fail, testing on arrival is only the way forward.
Foreign tourism to Thailand will be finished and wiped out if they leave it until late next year. They need to test on arrival or let the industry fail until the virus disappears or vaccine arrives and works. People have short memories and countries that are closed for too long will fade from memory. Two week quarantine is a non starter, no one wants to be confined to a hotel for two weeks after arriving from a long haul flight.

The strategy is already set in stone, no virus allowed = no tourists without quarantine. Sadly the Thai government will allow them to fail.

Tourism was 5.65% of Thailand's GDP in Q1 of 2020. It's the 9th largest jobs sector in 2019. As reported.
That said... When the US depression hits, it will hit the world. Thailand will be hit very hard unfortunately, IMHO.
I read overall it was 21.6% of GDP in 2018, inc domestic tourism, that's a big hit!

Somewhat ironic that BGs that thought they were special, are finding out that they ain't nearly as special as they thought they were. They must be finding it hard to realise that lying on one's back and thinking of the money isn't a skill in much demand any more.
Some of the bars have setup YouTube channels and encourage
mugscustomersviewers to buy them lady drinks via PayPal or Superchat for virtual entertainment of them dancing in a beer bar. Not sure how long this can carry on for without being let into the country.Yes not much skill in a being a bar girl and the demand is now massive over supply.

Yes, they had a couple of days with 100+ deaths (one August 19 and one Sept. 4). I would like to see explanations on those. I would like to be sure those were not just statistical accretions which sometimes happen in the data.
I watch SpainSpeaks on YouTube, the data comes back from 17 regions and there are delays in getting it. This is why their figures are all over the place. I think do have a problem, but it's not all over the country.

I don't think those who've had it already will get it again but once the elderly come out of isolation it's still there waiting for them.
Just look at Spain, in August they appear to have eased off measures and now things are really ramping up over there. The deaths have gone from 1 or 2 each day a month back to well over 100 a day on some days this past week.
It's not gone away, London hasn't caught up with Spain, yet.
It looks like Spain are having problems in care homes again, it's difficult finding any infomation on what is going on there. France are having 7000 to 9000 new cases per day, but the death rate is stable and so is hospital admissions, they are blaming the younger people for getting infected. The general trend is blaming the younger people, next will be closing things down and limiting gatherings. There is a feeling bubbling up now with the restrictions, further limitations will definately spark large protests.
