  1. What happened millions of years ago or five minutes ago is not in your immediate experience. Only the consciousness of the present moment is. It is the only thing you can experience. This thread is about awakening, not belief.

Well, then maybe you should open your eyes

What happened in the past can be ascertained by forensic examination of traces available in the present. What happened in the past can also be recorded and reviewed. It appears your understanding and awareness of scientific examination is severely lacking.

    Objective reality is verifiable.

You need to read what I have written more carefully and then perhaps your eyes will open. I am talking about your experience which can only be of this present moment whether you are eating your lunch or reading a verifiable paper on some past recorded event. I remind you once again that this thread is about awakening. You can only be awake to the present regardless of whether the dinosaurs once walked the earth. BTW I have a science degree which has equipped me very well to examine to evidence. What is the evidence you exist? It is consciousness is it not?

There's lack of evidence supporting the existence of consciousness. Therefore "consciousness" cannot be evidence for existence.

It seems that you have free will and can determine your own actions. You can act as part of the environment and the environment will respond... but are these two things (you and the universe) actually two or just one?

It's far more reasonable, to me, to say that "existence is" and "consciousness is not".

You are awareness, a witness to events; thus YOU ARE THE EGO... a part of nature which is observing and interacting with another part (of itself). Why make it any more complicated ?-- maybe because death is scary and you desire the afterlife?!!

Seems to me that "consciousness" is another way of talking about spirit or soul. Of course these things are very unfashionable yet most cultures throughout time have had belief in such a dualism. We can't say "yes but they are backwards and we now know better"... we can't that because consciousness is no more scientific than "soul".

  2. Died?

He was already liberated from the cycle of birth and death facepalm.gif

The body of a man called Prince Gautama later to be known as the Buddha was born and died. His true nature was realized to be that which is not born and does not die.

Yes but he delivered that message whilst he was alive !

You're suggesting he's saying "The real me will not die. Only my body will die".

How is that any different to regular reincarnation ?

According to what you believe; "The Buddha" might have simply been wrong and may have actually been reincarnated as an Icelandic Eskimo.

So' At what point does liberation from reincarnation actually occur ?

Perhaps reincarnation is garbage. How can anyone know for sure that reincarnation is real ?

So tell me what you think.

Of what you claim lays beyond death; is actually your present state.

Of your present state right now: is what you believe lays over the rainbow.

...and of what actually lays over the rainbow; is what you mistakenly believe about your present state.

You can't see your present state because you are it already.

I consider Tribler quite cool. Please see attached screenshot. Happy New Download Year. Please see "Pirate Bay" downloads on screenshot.

Interesting. I note in their forum that this software automatically makes your computer "a node" for others peoples traffic so some random weird stuff could be traced back to your own IP address.

  5. Book a flight to Kuala Lumpar. "Plaza Low Yat" is comparable in size to Pantip but the retailers stock *everything* and the prices are cheaper than Thailand.

For example; Whilst on a Visa run I picked up a Logitech gaming mouse - not available in Thailand - and the price was cheaper than the best price on eBay.co.uk.

  6. All definitions are and always will be imprecise. Anything you add to yourself is getting further away from yourself. Discard all definitions. Discard all religious scripture. Kill the Buddha.

How would it be possible to kill "the" Buddha when said Buddha is already liberated from the cycle of birth and death ?

The man called Buddha died 2,500 years ago. If he merged with the infinite he is no longer the man called Buddha.

    Died?

He was already liberated from the cycle of birth and death facepalm.gif

  7. (Ven Maha Boowa)

All living beings must fall into one of these four categories. As I investigated the nature of the world, it separated naturally, of its own accord, into these four types of individuals. I could see that superior individuals existed in that multitude of humanity which I had felt so discouraged about teaching. Ugghaåitaññý: they were fully prepared to cross beyond in an instant. In descending order: there were vipacitaññý, those progressing quickly toward the goal; then, the neyya, whose desire to lie down and take it easy competes with their desire to be diligent. Do you see what I mean? Those two opposing forces are vying for supremacy within their hearts. And finally padaparama: those who are human in physical appearance only. They have gained nothing at all to enhance their future prospects. Death for such people is death without distinction. There is only one possible direction they can go—down. And they fall further and further with each successive death. The way up is blocked, for they have gained absolutely nothing beneficial to take along with them. They can only go down. Remember this well! This teaching comes straight from my heart. Do you think I am bluffing and telling you deliberate falsehoods? When compared with a heart that’s absolutely pure, the world is one big refuse bin, containing different grades of garbage. From the highest, ugghaåitaññý, to the lowest and most common grade, padaparama, all possible types are gathered together in the same great receptacle. The entire world of conventional reality is one big contaminated mix of good things and bad things. Do you understand? In my investigation, I sifted through this huge pile of garbage and uncovered four distinct grades of living beings.

He strongly implies there's a dualism in our hearts:

two opposing forces are vying for supremacy within their hearts

He then implies that his own heart is absolutely pure and I personally take this to mean "empty", i.e absent the previously mentioned dualism, rather than "altruistic" :

When compared with a heart that’s absolutely pure ...

from this - presumingly enlightened - viewpoint; he then exposes our own ignorance:

... the world is one big refuse bin, containing different grades of garbage... four distinct grades of living beings
  8. On the subject of Reincarnation - can can someone who believes in this explain how approx 150 years ago the human population was 1 billion whereas today its some 7 billion.

If 1 billion souls were reincarnated over this period where did the other 6 billion come from ?

Perhaps we should start a million years ago when the human population was only in the thousands.

The illusion of the Mind trickes us into thinking it is more then just a manifestation of the Brain. This allows us to forget that we are just another hairy Ape that came down from the trees.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_spiritual_realms

The ten spiritual realms are part of the belief of some forms of Buddhism that there are ten conditions of life which sentient beings are subject to, and which they experience from moment to moment.

The ten spiritual realms are part of Buddhist cosmology and consist of four higher realms and six lower realms. Some schools of Buddhism see them as being external, ten different planes of existence beings can be born into, whilst others see them as states of mind that can be shifted between due to external and internal influences.

  9. I would think that after a person has been 'awakened', he/she will have conquered all sensual desire for food. One will eat only because one is hungry. If one has knowledge of nutrition and one has a choice of food, one will choose the food that is the most nutritious, rather than wallow in the sensual delight of fine chocolate. wink.png

Is it possible for an "awakened" person to lie or communicate in a manner which creates disingenuous impressions in another person ?

  10. It's a common attitiude in Asia and it relates to not getting involved in others affairs. A form of karma.

The best way I can describe it is this: the sharp knife cuts through swifter. The muddled knife becomes a burden.

You don't understand why it would be considered getting into others affairs, and your gf thinks you're not very smart to ignorantly get involved with others affairs!

You're gf has good Asian morals. She's a keeper. You can learn from her... or you can decide you're smarter, your call...

  11. If only there was a shop like B2S full of pens in Pattaya central festival mall with pads of paper to try them on and price tags. facepalm.gif

Pattaya? Friendship Supermarket (Pattaya Tai) have plenty of pens, with pads to try them on, last time I went in there.

  12. - Name of dish

Spicy Sliced Fish in Chili Oil

    -- Price of dish
    420 baht

420 Baht for a single dish in a small bowl!

I'm not a fan of seafood / fish but I'd be surprised if you couldn't find the very same dish for 210 baht elsewhere.

Sure you can eat "normal" Asian food nearly anywhere.... and when the bill comes simply insist on paying AT LEAST B400. blink.png

  13. Some 15 year old kid will be reading this thread thinking "That girl didn't fall off the ugly tree, she's hot, all these guys are full of sh**".

I was sitting in KSK this morning, 50 prettier teens walked past me.

    Some of them were boys.

To win this sort of contest, the winner should be exceptional, this girl is ordinary.

Dad must have paid the judges for her to win.

I'm surprised how dark she is.

Some 15 year old kid will be reading this thread thinking "That girl didn't fall off the ugly tree, she's hot, all these guys are full of sh**".

'Pon me soul, seems as if you know thailiketoo.cheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Seems to me that any man here trying to convey something like "I don't know how my son could like that girl. Yes, I vaguely remember liking young women myself, but it's all a distant foggy memory now"... is untrustworthy.

For a grown man; there's a whole world of difference between seeing that a girl is pretty and desiring her as an (inappropriate) sexual partner.

If a man denies desiring her sexually; fair enough.

...but to deny that girl's perfect beauty.. well now I turn the tables and call you out as not rightfully sound in your thinking.

  15. Did anyone watch the clip that was already posted ?

The girl is the winner of a fashion modelling contest.

Maybe she wants to be a model ?

    Pushy parents are another matter.

Some parents push their children academically, others in sport, etc.

Some parents let their kids do whatever... and that itself is a form of abuse.

  16. J woke up as the sunlight flickered on his eyelids, the sounds of "80sHits.com" played on his bedroom radio and the morning sounds of the rush hour traffic filtered into the apartment.

Had it all been a dream? How could an imaginary "woman" be so strong, so very alluring? As he turned over to avoid the piercing light, he noticed coarse white hairs on the pillow,

that's weird, he thought, but his mind was hazy and things didn't seem to ...Suddenly there was a loud knock at the door.

  17. he and all the other characters were expunged like vomit and fled quickly under the cover of darkness.

When timmy's supernatural scream had fizzled out, Gayllips quipped "get your broken ass out of here whilst you can still walk, kiddo".

"Oh Gayllips, do take me away on your unicorn" Timmy pleaded. "Sorry Timmy but I only ride bareback with J", said Gayllips before she slipped into the night.
