  1. I am registered with HiFX and have just logged in to get an estimated figure for transferring money to Thailand.

For 5,000 GBP the estimated exchange rate was 47.72

For !0,000 GBP the estimated rate was 47.82

Taking the Bangkok Bank TT rate as 48.25 would mean it would cost you approx. 4300 baht to transfer 10,000 GBP or approx 2600 baht for 5,000 GBP.

If you transfer your money to the Bangkok Bank in London for onward transfer to you Thai bank in GBP the max. cost is 20 GBP+o.25% (200-500) baht = approx 30 GBP.

The only thing you have to worry about is if sterling should fall before it hits your Thai bank acc.

  2. Did my first on-line transfer yesterday Halifax - Bangkok bank £9.50

Great system - and can save another GBP 2.00 with the discount code

It seems not everyone agrees with you!

    http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews179697.html

I have just read the information on the Halifax site about sending money overseas as on the surface a flat fee of 9.50 GBP ( 7.50 with promotion ) looks favourable. But then I read that they exchange your pound notes into euro before sending them to your bank in Thailand! Does this mean that your Thai bank receives euro and not the GBP you originally sent or is it transferred into baht?

Could you tell us if the amount that actually leaves your Halifax acc. in the UK is the same as that amount exchanged for baht using the TT rate less the 9.50 GBP?

This is not a trick question nor am I trying to catch you out, I am just looking for the cheapest way of transferring funds to my Thai bank.

BTW. My Thai bank, Bangkok bank charges something like 0.25% with a max. of 500 baht when it receives money from a foreign acc. I don't know if other Thai banks do the same but it should be factored in when relating to charges for transferring funds.

  3. OK, so I know this is an old topic but I thought it might be of interest to new TV members who are into r/c planes and even those who just want to watch.

Basically, Pattaya rc has a new home which is just across the road from the old flying field. Details of how to find the old field are in an earlier post but just in case here is the web site for the new field:-

    http://www.pattaya-rc.com/info.html

Everyone welcome! Drinks and snacks available. Toilet facilities.

Come and watch or join in.

Here's another site where you can see pictures of activities at Pattaya rc:-

  4. I have NOT ordered anything from Tower Hobbies but I understand that postage from the US is very expensive and will probably make it not worth the time. I have also heard that some US companies do not send to Thailand.

What are you looking for as there are some companies closer to home that you could buy from them.

I personally use Hobbyking in Hong Kong for model supplies and never have any problems with delivery although the Thai customs nearly always charges for imports depending on size of order.

  5. I have uninstalled the RAR extract frog and uploaded WinRar.

Now when I've downloaded a movie if I double left click on the title which opens the files for extraction there is a new symbol - tcon-image with a small vlc player symbol. If I right click this I can play the movie without having to extract it first. The sound is an improvement but I still have to turn the volume to full!

  6. I too have found that the test is required when the vehicle reaches 7 years of age and the registration can only be updated with the certificate issued by the test station.

Here in Pattaya they have a test site just across the road from the vehicle licensing office and only takes about 10 mins. to do the test, depending on the amount of people waiting.

I've had my vehicle tested twice now, I believe the test is required every year after reaching 7 years.

It certainly isn't as strict as the dreaded MOT test in UK, as I've only seen them check lights, indicators and brakes but they do make a point of checking the chassis number.

    The cost was 200 baht.

  7. I have been using a free rar extract frog program for extracting rar files ( mainly movies ) downloaded from the net.

It works OK except when playing extracted movie using VLC player ( or Media player ) on computer I have to turn up sound to maximum and even then cannot hear every word spoken.

If I burn a dvd ( I usually use dvdflick ) or copy movie to a usb thumb drive and play direct on my TV the sound is no problem. The trouble is only when I view on monitor.

I am using Windows 7. I don't beleive I had the problem when using win XP although at that time I mainly burnt all movies to dvd so perhaps didn't notice.

Can anyone give me advice using normal "speak" that a "non geek" can understand?

I have the win 7 sound controls set at the highest possible output and do not get any problems when viewing movies etc. that are downloaded without having to use an extract prog.

  8. I have recently bought a new TV set, the first for 8 years.

Although the content of Thai TV is still not up to anything in the west, the quality of picture is!

I get my TV programs from True using dish on the roof, both True programs and Thai.

True quality is absolute rubbish compared to Thai. OK, there may be a good explanation for this, distance of transmission etc. but I'm just wondering when reading about new HD programs to be launched by True if they are not conning us into paying extra for HD by lowering the quality of existing programs.

The new TV by the way is a LG.

  9. I'm surprised the ends have worn out before the hose!

I have just replaced my hose after 8 years but the ends are still in good condition. The price for a 12 metre hose was 2000 baht including 2 ends. I did buy a spare end for the previous hose which cost 300 baht.

  10. ...I fly RC here and have found I can get anything I need, even Great Planes, Sullivan and DuBro parts here quite easily. Many shops in CM and BKK. The fuel I buy comes from the UK or USA and is only slightly more expensive than where it comes from. The only thing not available are kits. You might consider giving RC flying another shot here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't many of the model planes these days fly on electric motors with rechargeable batteries??

You are quite correct boatguy. I would think there are now more people using "electric" power than fuel. It's much more clean and convenient and the development of motors and batteries is getting better and cheaper all the time.

  11. Hi Boatguy,

If you've not yet made your move to Thailand from your own country get all your gear taken apart and ship it over. I had quite a bit of model railway stuff some years ago in the UK but sold it before leaving, thinking it would not be of any use to me. I wish now that I had kept it. You will need a hobby when you get here and model railways are great! You can get some models here but are very expensive. I saw some American models in Central in Bangkok some years ago, don't know if they still stock them. You can also import from places like Hong Kong but you do get charged duty. I have seen lots of materials for making scenery in local craft shops so you only need the trains and track.

I have taken up rc flying and contrary to another post is not so expensive. I regularly order planes from Hong Kong but everything needed for building and flying is available here.

PS. If you bring your railway and move anywhere near Pattaya let us know as would love to come and see your models.

  12. I use my mobile even less than you!

About a year ago I topped up with I think, 500 baht because my grandson was visiting and he would be able to call the UK. I was due to top up again last July but because I had plenty of credit I didn't bother until last week when I topped up with 300baht. I am now nearly 500 baht in credit lasting until next January.

I am using AIS 1 to Call.

To get this low cost tariff I just went into Telewiz and asked them to put put me on a straight forward "no gimick" tarif for low usage.

    Hope that helps! :) :)

  13. My pool is approx. 10 x 5 mts. kidney shape, 80k lts.

I think the grout has been treated unfairly and may need regrouting in the next few years.

About how much would this cost?

    Thanks.

    Dear OP,

your post is about grouting in a pool and my question directly refers to grouting.

Would it be possible to give me an answer?

My pool is probably average size for Pattaya ( 10 x 5 ) so an average answer would be acceptable.

    Thanks.

  14. i have the same problem as the OP, barkleys will not let me do online or phone transfers to a non UK account

currently i am transferring money to my brother's UK account, 5000 pound per day (max allowed on phone transfer) and when he has enough money, he will send to me. but i'd like to be able to do the whole thing myself.

is there any way you can think of i can open an account in the UK without being there at a bank that allows on-line transfers overseas?

if not, which UK banks have the ability to do large overseas transfers on line? i can have my brother open an account and send me details i suppose.

monsieurhappy , i looked at the BKbank website "

If you or the remitter has a bank account in the UK with Internet banking service, your funds can be transferred online directly to your account or a recipient account with Bangkok Bank in Thailand, using the Bangkok Bank London branch’s sort code and its special “clearing” service account to transfer the fund from the UK to Thailand via the BACS system.

    "

on the face of it this looks interesting and i will try call them in London when open to check. assuming that works and you get a good rate, it sounds fine except i can only transfer 5000 pound max per day and i have a lot of money to move so i prefer to move to thailand a large chunk in one move.

    thx steve

    steve,

I went the BKK bank in London route, filled in the online form to transfer money from my UK bank but after more than a week the funds had not arrived in BKK bank. Then I checked my UK bank to find the funds had been returned. I phoned my UK bank who just told me to ask BKK bank. I sent BKK bank an email which was answered over a week later, telling me I had not filled in the form correctly and they didn't get my BKK bank acc. number.

I have since used HiFX who I had previously registered with and got the funds through within 5 days.

I got a rate that was only 0.16 baht per pound lower than the BKK bank TT rate. so was quite happy.

I do have an address in UK so was able to register with HiFX.

My own bank in the UK does transfer fund using SWIFT and 8 years ago when I first came out I used them to transfer funds for buying my house, don't know if anything about amount has changed. Up to last year I used them for transferring smaller amounts but I wanted the convenience of using internet as opposed to sending them a filled out bank letter.

    Hope that helps.

  15. If your pool is similar to mine you should have 3 "holes" for taking water out of the pool and 3 or more for putting it back in.

My pool has 1 hole at the bottom of the deep end, covered with a grate, 1 hole where the skimmer is and 1 more at the side of the pool a few inches below the waterline.

In the pool house there are 3 taps that control the on/off from the 3 holes taking water out of the pool.

Normally the taps from the hole in the deep end and the 1 from the skimmer are open for filtering through the sand filter.

The other tap from the side of the pool is closed.

When I want to use the vacuum I close the 2 taps from the bottom and skimmer and open the tap for the hole at side.

I leave the lever on the sand filter set to "Filter."

Then plug in your hose to the 1 at the side and away you go. When finished, just reverse the process.

You can also use the hole at the skimmer for vacuuming but change the taps accordingly.

Obviously, this process is for vacuuming your pool. If you want to "waste" water after a lot of rain etc. or if you want to "backwash" the process is different.

Whether you use the vacuum hose or not when you "waste or backwash" you must first stop your pump and then using the lever on the sand filter, turn it to the process you need and then turn the pump on again.

    Hope that helps.

  16. Khao Yai national park

Is Khao Yai as nice as it looks online? Any recommendation on where to stay (preferably a guest house or hotel).

A couple of weeks ago we travelled through Khao Yai on the 3077 road south to north.

After leaving the north exit/entrance and heading towards Pak Chong you will find many resorts, hotels and guest houses.

We chose one called InKhaoYai/the bakery coffee shop. It's fairly new, has adequate sized bungalows with a/c & european b/rooms. 1200 baht per night including b/f. There are plenty of places to eat and drink but at this time of year it was fairly quiet. It was Friday night though and at a bar called "Cowboy City" there was a Thai group playing some good music.

Don't know if they play every night.

  17. As well as looking for the cheapest way of transferring GBP I am also looking at a more convenient way without having to open a new acc. in another bank. I'm not sure if I could do that anyway without being there personally and I don't know when I'll be next visiting the UK.

Convenience also being able to transfer smaller amounts when the baht is high and more when the baht is/maybe low!

If the BKK bank exchange rate is the same in London as is quoted on their site then it wouldn't matter if it took 5 days for the Swift transfer to Thailand as it would already have been changed into Thai. baht.

  18. HiFx charge nothing

You pay Hifx out of your UK bank account using a UK credit card or charge card.

They give you a fixed exchange rate at the moment you click the buy button.

HiFx than use SWIFT to transfer the Baht from their account to your Thai bank account.

There are no fees for you to pay, HiFx pay all fees including anything your Bangkok Bank charge ...... (usually 200bht)

If you use the banks directly, you can never know the exchange rate you are going to get as they pay the rate on the day received, not the day sent. Bangkok Bank ALWAYS charge a fee for money put into your account from a foreign account, but they don't tell you about it, so unless you do a Baht transfer you will never see the 200bht charge ....... even from their bank in London.

So the exchange rate they use will be their displayed rate on the day the funds reach Thailand, about 5 days after to send the money (-200bht fee).

So your charges using your system will be 15UKP SWIFT sending + 200bht receiving and rate on day of receiving

I have registered with a FX company but when I checked the amount I would receive, even though I agree with you that once you click the button that rate is locked in, it is quite a bit less than using the BKK bank approach. 15 pounds against 60 approx. for a sum of 2500 GBP. The % deducted by the FX co. gets less as the sum transferred increases.

I agree that it takes at least 1 day for your transfer to reach the BKK bank but unless the pound is very erratic the change will possibly not be noticed and could actually be more than less.

According to the BKK bank site the 15 pound fee is for any amount whereas the FX cost rises with increased amounts.

  19. I may not have made things very clear in my first post so I'll try again.

I use 2 banks in the UK but neither will let me transfer online funds to another country.

I can however transfer online funds to UK banks etc.

If I want to send a Swift transfer of funds to my BKK bank acc. in Thailand I have to send a bank form to them by snail mail.

I am allowed to transfer funds to the BKK bank in London because it is obviously in UK.

On the BKK bank web site they say that if funds are transferred to the London branch to be sent on to an acc. in Thailand they will charge a fee of 15 pounds and use the BKK bank exchange rate when they transfer the funds to Thailand and that no charges will be made in Thailand.

    http://www.bangkokbank.com/Bangkok%20Bank/Personal%20Banking/Transfering%20Funds/Transferring%20into%20Thailand/Receiving%20Funds%20from%20UK/Pages/UK_Internet%20Banking.aspx

15 pounds may not be the cheapest rate but it doesn't seem too bad considering I have everything set up for it ie. online UK banking and a BKK bank acc. in Thailand.

What I do want to know is if the exchange rate they use in London is the same rate I see when I access their site in Thailand?
