  1. If I could live again, I might be born a Thai Chinese man with very fair skin and into an influential family.

I have not been to another place where such a simple combo would bring so much benefit.

All the p@ssy you want. Rape the poorly educated, spineless Thai population. Absolutely fabulous life.

That is exactly what I see many of us white foreigners do as well. Not me though...

  2. 1. When the daughter and wife spend some time together, the first thing you do is run off to Pattaya? Why?

    2. You do not want to be bothered by ladies, of all places in Thailand, why do you go to Pattaya?

    3. Walking around in Pattaya, there are too many ladyboys? It leads me to believe you are walking around on Walking Street!? Why do you walk around on Walking Street if you do not want to be bothered by ladies and ladyboys?

    4. You are in Pattaya, Thailand, but not are you only offended by Ladyboys, you are also upset by the fact that there are many Thai Men in Pattaya? Pattaya is located in Thailand, therefore, you will gonna have to deal with Thai men as well.

    5. You told the ladies that you were not interested, and kept to yourself, and you wonder why they, after a while lost interest in you??

  3. when thai men are brought up to believe they can do what ever they want what do you expect. The other night outside my wifes units she asked a tennant from the unti next door if he could park his car somewhere else because he always parked it acroos our entry(steps up from the road) so none of our tennants could get past it. He camw out with his girlfriend & they threatened to have someone kill her if she did it again, then I realized what was happening and got out of the car, he took off at a great rate of speed, too gutless to face another man. This is typical of thai men, no gutts unless they are beating on a female or in a pack, they simply cannot accept loosing face or being wrong, my wife now says I must watch my back as this idiot may pay someone to do something to me for making him loose face while threatening a women(in front of his GF) or have someone beat up on here and her daughter/mum, real men hey. They do it because it makes them feel like a big man and to show people how tough they are, have to feel sorry for the thai wives/GF's of these <deleted>.

You will find much the same behaviour in the poorer, Chav areas of the UK. Nothing cultural. Stupid, desperate people of all nations behave like childish idiots in my experience.

I agree with this totally, but somehow, some people here on Thaivisa, loves to pick on Thai men, according to some people here, Thai men are the lowest scum on earth.

They love to feel that they are superior, being the knight in the shining armor, coming here to rescue the innocent, lovely thai lady, from the evil Thai men.

Have you been listenting to bar girls again?
Nope, I got that from Thaivisa. Many guys here feel they are superior to Thai men, I guess it helps them to justify their relationship with their Thai wife.
  4. I tend to find the term Farang rude, and you don't often hear it from Thais. Once in 5 years in our village I have been referred to as the Farang to my face and that was in a heated argument.

Why use it in the context of this post?

I know what you mean. Let's use the term "white man" in future. It has a lot more dignity.

What about foreigner? Or your nationality, or even westerner is better, if he is, that is. But foreigner would be just fine.

  5. I get called "farang" all the time...they think because I don't speak the language, I don't know what they're saying....clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif

It is very funny for a few years, to be the crazy, or exotic, "farang" but as someone pointed out earlier, if you plan to stay here long time, and have a family, and have tight bonds with your extended family, you will certainly get tired of being called "the other" all the time, the object. You would much rather be a part of the family.

Some people just love to call themselves farang, (there is nothing more ignorant that call ourselves farang) much to their disadvantage in the long run, but they fail to see the negative consequences, as they are usually not obvious in the short run.

  7. Isn't it ironic that as the Thais are getting rid of their year long built up resentment at farang , the farang are lapping it all up with a smile on their face. I'm talking about places like Khao San Road and Pattaya where they hate farang but grudging smile (and more) just to get their cash. What a clever idea turning Sonogram into an aggressive festival.

I blame the foreigners for this, not the Thais.

  8. We have seen plenty of forums for foreigners were we discuss Thai people and Thai culture.

I have also seen some people mention there are thai forums that discuss foreigners, in one of the recent threads, such a forum was discussed.

Does anyone have any links or addresses to any of those forums?

  9. Don't bother asking, because as a falang, you definitely can't afford it in ANY major mall in downtown Bangkok. Remember the old saying "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it?" Also don't forget the even older saying "As a falang, your price will be at least double the Thai price."

Jesus - bitter much ? The OP asked a simple question, and you cut him off at the knees - way to go, Mr Negativity. For all you know, he has a Thai partner who can make the enquiry on his behalf and just wants some sort of ballpark figure before he gets himself in any deeper : in any case, he doesnt deserve that kind of scorn.

What do you expect, TiT, Thaivisa is Thaivisa (full of bitter expats who are self proclaimed thai experts)

  10. I've noticed a sea change in taxi driver attitude since the gubernatorial election result. I live in Sathorn and asking them to go to Siam Paragon (at 2 pm yesterday) or Cenral Chidlom (at 10.30 am today) and other times and to nearby destinations seems to be met with the usual crap about traffic jams etc., as if Bangkok's traffic was somehow a new issue. Have I had a bad run, or have others noticed similar behaviour in recent days?

Yes, they refuse very often. Some people argue, that they need to get better paid, in order to be willing to go to more places, to me, that seems absurd, it should be the opposite.

If they are little motivated to go somewhere, and they can afford to be picky to where they want to go, if they got paid more, they would get even more picky.

  11. Used to live on the 2nd floor, used the AC (set on 28 celcius) for about 10 min before going to bed, then a fan was enough for the rest of the night.

I now moved to 15th floor, but in another building, and its HOT. I have to use AC all the time.

I know technically, it must be hotter the higher you go, but THAT much different?

    Anyone else experience something similar?

  12. I think Russians, the same as European and the same as Thais aren't a homogenous group in which everyone thinks the same.

I think some Russians hate Thais, some Russians love Thais, some Russians don't care about them and some Russians are all the holiday so drunk that they don't know that they were in Thailand.

First off, Thais are a nationality. So it´s valid to view them as homogenous in certain contexts.

Secondly, Russians has almost NOTHING in common with Western Europeans. Especially Northern Western Europeans.

  13. Of course Thailand is a racist country! The Thais are also very conscious about status and the colour of their skin. Who cares? Get on with life. The use of the term "farang" COULD intentionally be used in an offensive manner, but 99 times out of a hundred it isn't. So what? Those who worry about such things are just insecure, paranoid twits. Who cares what they think?

As macChine pointed out, language is very important, as it sets the stage for interaction.

Everyday here in Thailand, we see many people who are being scammed and ripped off, as a result of being alienated and grouped together based on such a shallow thing as ones skin color.

  14. Farang has been done to death. Stop it! If you really feel strong about it go back

You seem to feel strong about this subject yourself, I think it is an important subject to discuss.

  15. Disagree strongly with this. The term is a slang word denoting a race. Therefore it is racist. I understand maybe "They don't mean anything by it..," usually, but neither did my grandparents when they used the term " n*gger."

Or actually they did, as it was quite acceptable to diminish and marginalize blacks with usage of this term, and " farang " is the same and means potato, I understand. It's no different from the term "eggplant "for blacks in USA .

Language is very important, it sets the stage for interaction. ( which is why I also resist the term " girls" for fully grown women.)

To be referred to by my race, especially in my presence is not just rude, it is racism.

I make a point of not accepting it, especially in professional situations.

    Very good post! 5 stars!

  16. I don't think farang people all look the same to Thai people but they obviously categorize us into the "farangs" which maybe makes you feel like you're being referred to as the same as every other farang... But I don't think we're all the same.

You don´t think we are all the same, but Thais in general think all white people are the same, we are all just farang to them, unfortunately.

And many of us, actually seem to like the idea of grouping ourselves together by calling ourselves farang all the time. I think it is very counterproductive.

We love to call ourselves farang, so I guess we get what we deserve. Personally I think it is a very stupid word, even though I know Thais do not mean anything negative when they call us that,

Well if you want to get your knickers in a twist over the use of a word then feel free. I personally think its the same as foreigner or westerner and I don't really care.

I don't actually group myself together however I guess we all have some common ground being Western and whatnot.

I'm sorry that you only know Thai people who refer to all Westerners as "Farangs" and not personally. You're obviously hanging out with the wrong Thai people. :P

No its not the same as foreigner, westerner, american, etc. I dont get my knickers in a twist either.

I do think it is very ignorant of us to call ourselves farangs.

Most thai people call you farang (if you are white) as well, its just that you are unaware of it.

  17. It is fine discussing this from the Swedish point of view , or that of any other nationality . Thailand is not so happy to have foreigners come to live here .

Sweden would have to provide BT800,000 for the bank account , an adequate monthly pension , a health insurance to cover hospital fees , doctors and prescriptions .

There would have to be an accord with the Thai government . From a foreigners point of view it could be good , so long as the financial backing is good enough .

For the most part the cost of living is infinitely less in Thailand and the elderly are less at risk from health problems in a warm climate , than freezing winter conditions .

Don't Swedes have good retirement pensions? If so, forget about the need for 800K in the bank account. I think these retirees would be as welcome as any of us -- they bring money and jobs!

Nope, we are going downhill, fast!!

  18. Would you prefer westerner? Caucasian?

I would prefer to be called by my name, or at least by my nationality, westerner, or foreigner, those are all more relevant than constantly being called white skin, farang, long nose, etc.

If I knew your name, I would call you by your name...as would most Thais. Hello Mr. forumuser. How are you Mr. forumuser? That's an interesting accent, Mr. forumuser. And so on. But that's not the point. We use the word "farang" interchangeably in normal conversation and it's never meant in a derogatory way. It just seems to me that some expats try to find a reason to attack the Thais, even for something as innocuous as the use of their own language. Again, pick and choose your battles.

As I said in the other post:

"We love to call ourselves farang, so I guess we get what we deserve. Personally I think it is a very stupid word, even though I know Thais do not mean anything negative when they call us that"

I don´t bash Thais, I bash ourselves for being ignorant.
