  1. The entire belief that Thais generally want Falangs to go home is a myth and is not based on reality...it comes from disgruntled Falangs posting on Thaivisa
Why would Thais be different from the population of any western country (take your pick) where they let any (almost) immigrant into their country. Do you think they like them?

and add the fact that in your homecountry, your main streets, main avenues would be crowed with, lets say black males, who all was walkin hand in hand with your local western chicks, and the fact that all these black males would have a monthly income the same size as you and your local fellows would earn in a year. I think these black males would be quite unwanted by a huge crowd of locals. Add to that, that these black males would often treat you like a child.

would we be allowed 2 tier pricing ,a corrupt police force and the ability to scam these rich black males for everything we can get ? wink.png

corrupt police forces are to be found everywhere, in some countries, more and in some countries, less, but still, consider what I wrote, you would probably agree, that we would protest a whole lot more if these black males invaded our main avenues, holding hands with our western chicks, than thai males do

Considering those facts, I think it is quite amazing, how friendly most of the thais really are...

  3. The taxi service in Bangkok is a bargain & usually very good (if you have some time on the ground here and know what you are doing.)

I understand why a driver would want to turn down a fare. Sometimes they are near the end of a shift and only want a fare headed in their direction.

These drivers have appointments of their own to make.

It only happens to me occasionally but in the tourist areas, it's another story.

Full time scammers posing as taxi drivers....., they troll the Sois rolling down the window to interview potential victims. Looking for a first time visitor they can lie to, defraud, scam & cheat.

It is a serious issue for our novice visitors and makes a very bad impression.

I agree, but from another point of view, if I was a taxi driver in bangkok i would bet my esarn ass i would be selective about the people i will let into my car. When saying this i am aware i might be suggesting the OP has something about his appearance causing the taxi drivers to be alert and roll down the window, just to be on the safe side..

Do you live in here in Bangkok, and you never had a taxi roll down the window, instead of letting you open the door?

I guess you must be very "hansum" indeed!

  4. Don't hesitate to take your wife to some of the bars at Soi Cowboy. Preferably a place with a good show (Long gun).

She may resist for one moment, but don't take it seriously: women love this stuff. She can't go there with a friend or alone, obviously. So you can give her a special experience she can later talk about.

I have done it with many "good" girls from Thailand and other countries, and they were all quite excited and found it a real experience. And the bars there are totally harmless.

How fun is it with foreign woman in the bars? If you ask me, not at all...

  5. I love being called farang, I take it as a compliment.

Yeah, they always shout "hello hansum man" after me!! Do they call you hansum too!!?? hmmm angry.png

Call me whatever, I just don´t wanna be associated with certain rude and obnoxious white skinned people.

  6. here here all you farang bah and farang dum:

Hope you know that Thai members of this forum are laughing at you for making fools of yourselves.

Get a grip folks, its not a derogatory term so don't make it out to be. numbnuts!

Old news, most of us know the word does not necessarely mean anything bad, however, for some of us, we simply do not want to be mixed up with, or associated with certain other (farang) nationalities that we consider less sophisticated.

  7. You guys totally miss the point, I could not care less about the racist thing.. The reason why I dont like to be referred to as a farang is, I simply do not want be associated with some of the rude brits and russians. When a thai says, farangs are fat, rude, and like fotboll, I want to say, no, thats british people, not me

many thais only get to meet farangs that are rude and obnoxious ,fat and drunken ,the people that hang around with prostitues in bars in tourist areas and go crazy when they get over charged for something

put simply ,the farang the thai most usualy gets to meet are usualy the low level drunken sex tourists anyway ,so if they draw their assumptions based on what they have saw in pattaya ,in sukhumvit ,in phuket etc

I don´t want to be associated with brits and russians

  8. Anyone witnessed the incident with the angry brit yesterday, around 7:30 Pm, on Sukhumvit, close to Soi 15.

He was extremely agressive, and wanted to fight a guy in a black car, he reached inside the car through the window, and tried to grab the driver, but luckily did not succeed. Then he tried to smash the window of the car.

Did anyone else witness this? Anyone know the story behind it?

  9. haha, now this is kinda funny, referring to what i just wrote above a few minutes ago, anyone witnessed the angry violent Brit attacking a black car on sukhumvit, close to soi 15?

He was probably on stereoids or something, he was totally angry and insane, he reminded me of a wild animal. He tried to grab the driver, but he could not reach him, so instead he started to land 4 heavy punches on the back window, I was waiting for the window to crack.

Anyone knows the story behind this incident? Why did the almost shaved headed fotboll hooligan Brit attack the car and the people inside the car?

and the sad story is, thais will just say, "it was a farang".

Maybe it was a taxi that wound its window down?

No, it was a regular car, black, but I get your point, hehe

The incident happened like 20 minutes ago

  12. Thaivisa is filled with cynical and bitter westerners, they are usually retired, and usually very lonely.

So Thaivisa provides them with a forum where they can meet other people like themselves, cynic, bitter, and lonely. So that will result in many nasty and childish comments, aimed towards fellow members, and very often thais and the thai culture.

  13. It's a big city and there is bad traffic, going the wrong direction at the wrong time of day is very bad for a taxi driver, so don't get your panties in a bunch if he doesn't want to go and just ask the one behind him. If no one will go, walk to a different spot and ask there or use public transport. I'm glad they can refuse fares and not get in trouble because it's better for the driver and keeps cost down for us

    I agree here 100%

The importance was not the "no" in itself, but the observation that taxi drivers who wind down their window instead of letting you open the door, is much less likely to pick you up.

I dont have a problem with them saying no per se, I just noticed that taxi drivers who wind down the window instead of letting you open the door, are mush less likely to pick you up. I think only one time, when a guy wind down his window, he picked me up.

  15. I'd rather they open the window to discuss if my chosen destination is convenient to them rather than find out it is not once I'm sitting inside..

well, my point is, if they let you open the door and starts to talk to you, it is more likely that they will pick you up, than if they just wind down the window, because they will most likely NOT pick you up if they do like that. But that is just my observation, and I want to hear others observations as well.

  16. I know exactly what the OP is talking about. You flag them down. They open THEIR window and say Bai Nai (sp?); you tell them, and then um and ah and then say no and drive off. Mean while you miss a couple of other taxis that might have taken you. I work in Asoke and live in Lad Prao. Getting a taxi in certain times of the day up there is neigh on impossible (sometimes you have too much stuff for the MRT). It drives me up the wall. Another place is near Pratunam - getting a cab there is bloody impossible. On some Occasions I have asked "where do you want to go? Is there an MRT / Sky train near there?" and get in.

Sometimes they are straight from the boonies, and don't know where you want to go is ("I show you" often helps) Mostly they just want flag fall rides over and over again so they get 35baht (+tip from farangs) for a 15 baht trip.

So, like the OP, if they open the window I ignore them and concentrate on the ones actually doing the job of taxi driver.

@Naam - it can close the door, not open it. A simple answer to the Honkies who just do not think their part of the deal is to close the door. Also, in HK, a taxi has to take you anywhere you ask them to. Its the law, and if they refuse just say you will call the police. Job done.

Yes, but they do it to Thais too, it's not a conspiracy against foreignors as some would try to imply.

Yes, it is not aimed at foreigners only, they do it to thais too as you said. Please dont make this another thai hates foreigner thread

Yeah, you know what I am talking about.

To the people who do not understand, I have heard people on thaivisa usually were not the brightest people in the world, bitter and less IQ, but this was ridicilous.

Anyway, I also make a point out of waving them off, as to show that I have noticed them, and still will not bother to ask them for their service.

So what is everyone elses experience, is taxi drivers who wind down their window instead of letting you open the door, less likely to pick you up?

I would say, 99% of the time, when they will not let you open the door, and instead, they wind down the window, they will not pick you up.
