  1. Busses go from morchit or pattaya, different companies. up to you. from pattaya its the yellow bus company. air con bus, and some busses have vip class.

Laos airlines goes to savannakhet, http://www.laoairlines.com/flights/flight-schedule.html. scroll down for savannakhet - bkk- savannakhet schedule. but please aware that you will need a visa (visa on arrival) for laos, this cost you about 1500 baht, depending on your home country. the bus from bkk or pattaya is cheaper than the visa fees.

the landscape around muk is plane, but a bit outside of the city you can see mountains. its just the typical isaan landscape.

some other ppl might fill in about muk itself. i only know the bus station and border.

  2. I prefer darling, which is the norm (I think). biggrin.png

Yes, if you're British or from some parts in North America.

Slight spelling mistake there. I think it was meant to be darkling. tongue.png

A trip up to the sticks a while back, some girl referred to me as dak ling, she was most pissed off when I referred to her as na ling, raucous laughter from the natives as one pissed off local exited stage left.

To which you were reffering: นา or น้า ? either way, hillarious

  3. Airfares & schedules are only loaded depending on the airline 335-353 days before that actual flight dates. So you will have to wait a bit to see it live. Using an agent that far out wont give you anything special at all, they will only sell you "IATA fares" that you can easily book yourself. "Consolidated fares" the lower priced tickets are only contracted 3-6 months out and the airline direct offerings use the same low bucket of inventory V Q class.

Since you know basically know your dates, I'd sign up to e-mail offers from the airlines you like and watch them like a hawk to see if something tickles your fancy, mid Jan-mid Feb you should start to see some deals either airline direct or from an agency.

I'm wanting to travel in April 2013 one way to the US. I checked Kayak and the ticket was $1,150.00 usd. Curious, I checked a leave date in December 2012. The ticket price was $880.00 usd. How can this be? I thought the earlier I book, it will be cheaper. Thanks

Sadly: No. Airlines have a system to get the most out of every flight. If you follow the flight prices and the available spots on the plane you can prices for a ticket going or down every day depending on the situation. You can use Kayak and other websites to set a price alert. And check the airlines websites regularly for sales.

If you a frequent flyer a professional website as http://www.expertflyer.com/frequent-flyer-programs might be also helpful, esp the function of the pro version "Fare Information"

  4. In the 777 i usually book an aisle seat in the last rows. Because the plane gets narrow there and the configuration changes to an 2-3-2 layout. But you have to take the aisle seat in the window row, and only the first 2 rows behind the last 2-4-3 row. this gives you space for put out 1 or two legs without disturbing the aisle for cremembers and passing by passengers. If you can not select the seat during booking, try to call your local Etihad office. The german one is always helpful, except its an code share with airberlin :(

  5. there are different types of ticket classes, each airline has available. full flex tickets costs you nothing when changed but are expensive. heavily discounted tickets impose a big changing fee. also the discounted fares have more rules, like not more than 30 day stay, or not valid after a certain date. dont forget to check these rules to and calculate the changing fee against a fully flexible ticket

i dont know where in ireland you are located, but china airlines and klm do code shares with aerlingus, so you can book with them a ticket flying into cork and not only dub.

  6. There is a shop directly across the street from the consulate that will fill out the forms, make copies, and take passport photos for you. I think they charged me around 250 THB for everything last January. As far as transportation from the airport goes, you should be able to arrange it with your hotel.

i filled out the form myself (pretty easy) and they did make the copies and took the photos = 120 baht all in.

topic success! I feel rich with useful information and my confidence has gone from somewhat timid but open to adventure, to quite confident (while still prepared for unexpected adventure!)

It's great to hear the direct experience you guys have had with the trip ahead of me.

And great to have the form links!

    Very helpful. Thanks everyone.

sometimes the tuktuks try to rip you off when they quote you a price for going to the consulate or so. when you haggle, tell him you paid exactly your amount when you were coming the same way.

if you can stand the heat, you can walk to everything within the city.

close to the consulate at the river is a nice floating restaurant. if i remember right it opens at 4 pm, but then its really quiet. just follow the road to the river and turn right. you should see it from there. if you turn left, and walk a bit down the river, you will come to the "riverview point". here you can sit down, eat something and enjoy the view over the river.

the market at the bus station offers alot, but make sure to walk around, many different prices for the same item.

  7. And is the application available online or will I get it from the consulate in Sav?

    Thx

Sent from my ST18i using Thaivisa Connect App

you can get one from the consulate in savannakhet, right through the gate, you will see a big table and some benches. on the table there should be a red basket that holds the applications. if you need copies of your documents to be made, you can do it just outside of the consulate, they even do photographs. keep in mind you need 2 photographs for the lao visa too. if you dont have them, they will charge you 50 baht to have your passportphoto scanned

  8. the transport relies on tuktuks. i dont know about the airport, but at the bridge there are several tuktuks available. the going rate is 100 baht per person from the border checkpoint to the consulate.

there are also overnight buses from pattaya and from bkk (different companies) going to mukdahan. the bus from mukdahan to savannakhet central is 50 baht, plus another 20 baht from the savannakhet busstation to the thai consulate for the tuktuk. i would suggest you take a tuktuk at the lao border as the normal bus will wait unitl every passenger has passed border control. and you have to hand in your application at 11 am at the latest.

  9. Emirates allowes you those 30 kg in as many piesces as you would like, so it is possible to bring 30 parcels with each 1kg. most other airlines allows you only 1 or 2 pieces.

    for etihad frequent flyers:

silver gets an additional 10kg, gold 15kg and gold elite 20 kg, bringing it to a maximum of 43 kg in economy if you are a gold elite.

  10. Why not just get married and nip down to KL for a new Non-O? Could then sort out marriage extension of Non-O next year; providing of course you can meet the required financial status.

If you would have followed the thread, he cant get married now as he is waiting for the correct papers to be sent back from germany. Without these documents he cant do the next move, which would be to make an apointment with the german embassy, after he finally got the "seal of approval§, than he can marry. but for now he is running short on his tourist visa.

  11. One more thing, i read somewhere that we could marry in BKK without having the affirmation legalized by the MFA, is that true?

Wrong, you need affirmation to get married from your embassy.

Translate it to Thai and have it confirmed-validated by MFA.,

I did this all in one day, no big deal.

Get a translation service that also makes the MFA validation stamp, if you don't like to sit in line for 4 hours, like I had to do.

ok, thanks...i found this information(dated may 2011) actually on the website of the German Embassy, according to them you'll get the affirmation in german and in thai and they also mentioned that the registry office at Bang Rak as an exception from the rule would give their blessings without the MFA validation stamp. Sounds too good to be true

It is true, i have done it myself. Bang Rak does need the MFA validation stamp. they will keep the thai version of the letter you get from the embassy. thats it. just make sure you turn up in bang rak early, as there can be a quite a queue. if you need copies to be made (you will) its just outside on the left hand. the staff in bang rak is quite helpful.

If you have any questions about it, just ask. like i said, i have done it just recently, including the visa run to savannakhet.

  12. Whichever way I look for the cheapest, and it ain't particularly cheap at the mo. Yes Matrix is good, then the airline direct, saves about £30 on their stated price. That Belgium airline Jetfly (or something like) gives good fares 299 Euros all in into Brussels, one way, then Eurostar for about £30 booked in advance

    http://www.jetairfly.com/en/ correct ?

    Right.

Just booked with the arsehol_e of all arsehol_e airlines Air India ,BKK/LON return..£620,only reason is that there is a 10 ton baggage allowance

    Shudder ... Air india

Just to add that Egyptair currently allow up to 46 kgs, in 2 bags (of 23 kgs max each) and Jet Airways (of India) 28 kgs (also 2 bags only)

If you fly on Etihad metal its 28kg as well, you only need to join the frequent flyer program. thats all.

maybe we should start a thread about baggage allowances, i think its very important for the longhaul traveling expat ^^

  13. Symbol rate and frequency depends on the channel you want to watch.

check http://www.lyngsat.com/Vinasat-1.html it has evera information you will ever need.

it has an azimtuth and elevation section on the page, so you should know where to point your dish. fine tuning is up to you. check the site carefully, for me it has the following information:

Azimuth & elevation in Si Racha, Thailand: 110.7° & 51.1°

  14. tariffs for import to europe should be obtainable by the danish custom authority - try this site for some more information: http://www.skat.dk/SKAT.aspx?oId=1826431

how much you have to pay for a container depends on the size of the container, 20 or 40 foot ? do you need the whole container or could it be loaded into a shared one ? you need a freight forwarder that brings your goods in and out of the harbour.

if you want to make a business with this import/export you should first think about how the goods should be transported and then ask around for a normal price. prices for shipment can varying on route, speed and even the ship used.

  15. I believe you can pay with credit card with no problem, provided she flies after the money has been recieved by airasia. if on short term you will need to be there to show the credit card so it is not possible. (Check with airasia by email).

Airasia doesn't issue paper tickets, just electronic ones for which you can print out the confirmation number.

comment about 7/11 refers to that you can pay many of your bills (including Air Asia) there, same as at the bank and the post office.

just in addition, the CC requested at check in is only needed due to prevent credit card fraud. i think the time for making a fraud claim is 30 days ? so if your GF flies some time after this i believe airasia does not bother to see the CC. if she flies only a handful of days after booking, airasia might ask.

if its on short term i would try to copy your CC, make a note on the paper that you as the owner of the CC are fine with the use for booking this flight. scan it and sent it to her via email so she can print it out. you can mark the inner 8 number black for security as for confirmation only the first and most importantly the last block of the number is needed. also suggest to her GF that the agent could call you to confirm you have the CC at hand.

  16. I havent found anything on the airasia website about 3rd party credit card payments. The best bet is to ask airasia directly what they need to accept this.

i know that china airlines wants a signed copy of the CC send to their office, others just want a signed copy of the CC showed at check in.

so if you cant find the information, i would book the ticket and ems your GF a signed copy of the CC stating for use at airasia checkin only.

but like i say, contact airasia and ask them.

btw, i have flown with some airlines, but only emirates so far asked me to present the CC i bought the ticket with (and yes, it was my own).

  17. Get a PC with an hdmi output. They usually come standard on laptops but some desktop computers don't have them. Make sure your tv can display at least 1080p and it has hdmi input. Also, buy a high-speed hdmi cable if you plan to display at 1080p.

    Shawn

    Hey Shawn,

Curious about your comment about the HDMI so there is a big difference in quality ? I see some for 500 baht and some as high as 2500 baht.

    Many thanks

There can be a difference in quality if the manufacturer saved on the shielding. Which can cause a problem when you put your cable along a power line etc pp.

But that does not mean that very manufacturer does so.

A good website with some information: http://www.learnhdmi.com/hdmi-cable-comparison

  18. It depends on the programs you are running. If they are native winxp than you could use dual boot. but most newer programms are running fine under win7.

so if you have a free partition that you could use for win7, i would suggest you go for the dual boot option until you are sure that all your programms are running under win7. there are several guides to have winxp and win7 on the same computer, one guide is: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html

Once you are sure you are fine with win7 alone you can delete the winxp installation.
