Have been withdrawing from ATM's in Thailand with foreign and Thai cards for decades, never had a problem.

    .... ???

Just until the last months, I didn't have any  problems with my VISA-Card over many, many years.

But suddenly the Thai ATMs showed me €-rates 2 Baht lower than the official Visa-rates, a loss of nearly 50 Euros when taking off 30.000 THB.  Since this time I never have  withdrawn money from a Thai ATM. Instead I made money transfers using my  €-bank account.

    Anybody the same problem?

  2. I cannot complain about our nighbours with a Myanmar origin.

The man was the leader of a group of good and reliable  handycrafts who had built our house and the cement ways to a bridge. I have told him many times, if he would have grown up in Germany, now he would be an engineer. We supported him building his own house connected to the cement tway. At that time his daughter was a young girl, and now an intelligent teacher in our village. The apple doesn't fall dawn far away of the tree.

Before the son of my wife came here for ever, he and his wife took care of our home and animals, when we left for a holiday or for seeing doctors in Chiang Mai.

In general, life in our village is very peaceful and relaxing.

  3. I recognize that the Thai government is doing its best to reduce the much needed falangs

    • taxing falangs for their money transfers to Thailand - in spite of DTA (Double Tax Agreement)
    • lifting the fees for a "tourism-fee-fund ...." as mentioned here in this forum
    • the list goes on, emtioned already here

Dear Thai government, you are doing your best to scare them off. ????

  4. LOS? Many members don't want to confirm it. I guess it depends on where you are living and on yourself.

Our village is a VOS = Village of smiles, one of many reasons I feel so well here in the remote North.

When I go down to the village all the people - Lisus, teachers, people from shops and the young children  etc. on my way down or upwards ever answer with a real smiling, seeing each other.

Even the dogs smile at me, when I return from the foodstalls in the village. I recognise their smiling when they wag their tails.

  5. The Thai Baht has lost against the Euro, too, witin the last days, weeks.

A very interesting experince on a Krungthai Bank ATM in Soppong:

Krungthai Bank – criminal exchange rates – in ATM of Soppong ???

Here in Soppong. Mae Hong Son Province, there is only 1 ATM available, a Krungthai ATM. I used it over more than 17 years with my VISA-Card. Maximum available amount; 20.000 THB. No problem until some months before. Suddenly the ATM showed me, that the VISA-€-exchange rate would not be 38,2 (i.e. The official VISA-exchange rate), but 36,2 for 1 €.

Of course, I stopped the ATM because of this uncredible and idiotic exchange rate. Today my son in law went to PAI. He/I got the official €-VISA-Excage-rate of 38,058294... THB for 1 Euro on a KrungSri ATM. And because you can take off a maximum of 30k for the same fee of 220 THB (as for 20k on most of other THAI BANK ATMs).

And noW the crazy and (out of my viewpoint) criminal result:

to compare it, I have to consider the same amount in THB – to the Krungthai and Krungsri Bank

    2 x 30220 THB = 60.400 THB against Krungtai Bank – 3x 20.220 THB = 60660 THB;

Result for withdrawing a cash of 60.000 THB (without fees):

    a) for the Krungtahi Bank here on our ATM i had to pay for 3 x 20220 THB = 60.660THB at a rate of 36,2 for 1 € = 1.675,69 €-.

    b) if I would take ( the 200 THB lower amount !!!)) of 60.400 THB from the Krungsri-ATM) I had to pay: 60440 / 38,058294... = 1.588,09 €.

That is a price-difference of 87,60 €, not jet respecting the differenc of the 200 THB, mentioned before.

And now the incredible thing. If you look at he official bankrates of the Krungthai BK --->

    1 € = 37,84.... THB .

When you campare this very, very different rates, you ask your self:

are there criminals at work on ATMs or is it the bank itself ????? Your experience with this bank, please.

I cannot find a precise thread for this. I am posting in Chiang mai because I want local knowledge only.

My regular source of Wholemeal bread has had to stop production, hopefully temporarily, and I am finding it difficult to get proper European style wholemeal bread. Makro and Big C only sell Thai bread which is far too sweet for my taste, Nana and Rimping are usually sold out before I can get there.

Recommendations please for a European style bakery, preferably to the south side of Chiang mai.

Order it directly from the bakery. Then You don't have this problem. As i have written in another thread: Joe's Bakery in CM. Delicious and good quality bread. I guess that is the bread alteady sold out in Rimping, before you go there.

looks like nice bread but do you do breakfast (I assume this your place)?

I don't have a daily breakfast in Jo's bakery, because I live 4 hours away of Chiang Mai. But I eate every morgning, I repeat it every morning, 3-4 slices of Jo's dark rye bread since many, many years. That says it all. We have eaten only one time in his bakery. The main reason, we  don't have our own car to go there every time we stay in Chiang Mai.

As I wrote before, I order a cartoon with ~20 packages and "save" hem for the consumption in the ice-box of our fridge.

Can anyone recommend some good Western style breakfast places in Chiang Mai? The only one I go to right now is Ozarks (around Hang Dong) and I didn't even know about that until someone told me! I live in Mae Jo but I'll go anywhere.

If you don't mind .......... . then try:

press and open  "Home" and then "Find Us" in --->

"We are on the Canal Road about 7 km south of the Samoeng intersection, right behind Wat  Thung Rang Raeng on the western side of the canal."

    You will not be disappointed.

  9. Since many, many years I order my dark (healthy)  German bread from a German Bakery in Chiang Mai. I enjoy the High quality, excellent service. etc. Google: Jo's Bakery.

Because i live 4 hours (by car) away of Chiang Mai I order it by telephone at least 2 days before Saturday (his baking day) and get it delivered very freshly by the public minibius in the late afternoon. In general I order 10 kg (~20 packages with 8-9 slices) and put them in the icebox of our fridge.

  10. SINSOD, a part of the Thai wedding ceremony.

    But what does it mean?

It should show that the husband is rich, has a lot of money. He should show it, so that all the guests should think: oooh, what a rich man, good for the bride (and the family). If true or not, that is not important. The guests should believe it. It's a bragging ceremony, bragging about something what isn't reality. In most cases the money has been borrowed from friends, relatives or the bank. After the marriage it has to be returned, as reported here in some/most cases.

When I read about this custom then I ask myself: why don't they put the bride in a showroom of a shop with a tag: 1m, 1.5m, 2m etc. ?

If I would be the groom I would buy fake banknotes - 5m ☺️.

  11. Good luck with this idea, Mr. S., it would be good for Thailand.

But when I read your list of your and the former military ministers etc., I recognised - it's impossible.

It's the same dream as if I would think to whin the lottery-jackpot. A chance by 1 to  more than 100 million and higher.
