  1. Nam

Thanks again for that. I do know a bit of Thai, but no Lao though! All I would really want is a good internet connection (but a girlfriend would be nice too). What are the internet connections like up there? The last time I was up north (15 years ago) in Ubon Rajatani it was a major hassle just trying to call Bangkok.

And what would you estimate as costs for renting a small place be? Thanks again.

And thanks too bahtandsold, that puts it into perspective.

  2. Hello Peter

There is a book called "Ordination Proceedure" available from the Mahamakut Foundation. It is available from the bookshop opposite Wat Boworn in Bangkok. The book is written for English speakers with an outline of the proceedure and transliteration of the Pali needed for the ceremony.

It will all be in Pali language - not Thai. There seems to be a lot to remember, and the wording changes depending on how many are ordaining together etc (eg I/we). There may probably be audio tapes/files on the net somewhere which could be used to help your son memorise the phrases needed.

There may also be some slight differences between the ceremony used by the Dhammayutika Nikaya and the Mahanikaya groups.

  3. Thanks guys - Thailand is a paradise isn't it. :o

I have almost got approx 30,000 per month coming in now from investments, so it is only a matter of time before I can 'retire'.

My plan is probably 6 months in Thailand and then back to Australia to work a while, then go back again.

Could anyone advise on the approx costs for living in the countryside. eg up near Nong Khai or thereabouts.

    Thaks

  4. Thanks guys

I have taught English in Japan briefly, but prefer the lifestyle in Thailand. I guess you are right, the hatai, about speaking Thai, as I would need to explain things. In the more advanced class I could get away with everything in Japanese though.

I wonder if there would be any courses in learning Japanese through an English medium - unlikely I imagine.

    Thanks again.

  5. Hi,

This topic has probably been done to death, I quick search didn't turn up much in the one place, so I would like to enquire:

What are the approx costs for someone living in Thailand? Probably Bangkok for starters.

    My estimates.

    Rent 6,000 - 10,000

    Food 5,000

    Bus etc 5,000

    Etc 10,000

    Total 27,000 - 31,000 per month

Would this be a reasonable figure to expect?

The reason I ask is that I am studying a course (via distance education) and figured I may as well live somewhere cheap and therefore possibly not have to work and can concentrate on my course for a while. I will need a good internet connection, so I assume up country wouldn't be too good.

  6. Hi.

I am an Australian with a master's degree in Japanese (language). I am wondering if anyone would know of the chances of getting a Japanese language teaching job in Thailand, preferably in a university.

I am a native English speaker, but for some reason I would feel more comfortable teaching Japanese. It is probably the fact that I studied Japanese rather grew up learning it naturally and therefore know how to explain grammar etc which I couldn't do with English.

    Thanks

I am really sorry to hear about your Grandmother.

However, there is not a person alive that has not experienced suffering, a loved one dying.

I am not suggesting that people be kept alive artificially longer than necessary using medical care which is about proloning life, not curing sickness (but then again how do you determine necessary?).

It would be a really difficult decision to decide when to put someone 'to sleep.' How and who would determine when? And who would adminsiter it? What about the karmic consequences? Killing can only be carried out in anger. If a vet, for example, had to adminsiter a lethal injection to a sick dog, at the moment of injection anger would arise (and other negative states?). This would then have consequences.

This is (one) Buddhist theory anyway.

  8. Hi. A few years ago I watched a great thai movie, (on SBS in Sydney). But I can't remember the title and cannot find it on the net anywhere.

It invloved a boy whose mother died giving birth to him. His father despised him because of this, and treated him badly. The dad had many lovers, and gradually the boy grew up and started having affairs with his father's mistresses etc.

It was a fairly new movie, in Thai with substitles.

    Does anyone recognise this description?

    Thanks.

  9. Euthanasia is to reduce the euthaniser's suffering. They cannot bear to see someting 'suffer' so they kill it, or maybe it is incovenient to keep it around. This is a very selfish act. Just think if it was a human loved one, would that person be killed? I think every being should be allowed to live as long as possible and then die naturally.

  10. Hi There.

I heard last year or so, Acharn Maha Bua virtually claimed that he was an 'Arahat' ie enlightened. I cannot read Thai, but beleive this caused some uproar over there in Thailand. Prior to this I had a great respect for Acharn Maha Bua, but I don't know what to make of this one. Did anyone follow this in the Thai media, and if so, waht was the general consensus on the matter?

  11. Thanks for the valuation information on Nepal - things I had not thought about before.

I also beleive that has been a 'revival'(?) of Theravada Buddhism there, with many students having studied in Burma, and Sri Lanka.
