The authorities have ramped up efforts to control cannabis misuse by closing over 1,000 shops and seizing nearly a tonne of cannabis flowers in a sweeping nationwide operation.

The crackdown, initiated by Thailand's Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, targeted 5,218 out of 18,763 cannabis-related businesses from 16 June to 13 August 2025, as part of a strategy to regulate the burgeoning industry and prevent youth access.

The actions taken during the operation included suspending 724 licences, revoking 129 licences, and prosecuting 180 businesses for operating without a valid licence. A significant move: 1,079 shops have been permanently closed.

Additionally, the operation resulted in the seizure of cannabis products in 116 instances. The authorities also made 33 arrests related to attempts to smuggle cannabis out of the country through Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports. Overall, a staggering 980.65 kg of cannabis was confiscated.

This enforcement follows a rise in public complaints since the decriminalisation of cannabis in 2022. A total of 176 complaints have been registered, focusing on issues like unlicensed sales, smoking within shop premises, sales to minors, public nuisances, and advertising violations. The most frequent complaints concerned unlicensed sales, with 68 reported cases.

Dr. Thewan Thaneerat, Deputy Director-General of the Department, emphasised the importance of strict regulation to ensure that cannabis usage aligns with health and social benefits rather than contributes to misuse. The focus remains on safeguarding youth and ensuring that the cannabis industry operates within a legal and socially responsible framework, reported The Nation.

D Nantasak Chotichanadechawong, Director of the Office for Protection and Promotion of Thai Traditional and Folk Medicine Wisdom, stressed the proactive nature of these operations. These operations occur on a weekly basis, with the most recent sweep taking place on 13 August 2025.

This effort involved collaboration with various agencies in Bangkok and Nonthaburi, including police stations such as Phaya Thai, Chana Songkhram, Samae Dam Metropolitan, and Rattanathibet Provincial.

Detailed inspections during these operations revealed that out of 17 shops, seven possessed valid licences, one had no violations, five were closed on the day of inspection, one was no longer in business, and two were operating without a licence, leading to prosecution. Another shop faced suspension because it breached licence conditions.

Authorities urge the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

Reports can be made via phone at 0-2591-7007 or through the department's website, www.dtam.moph.go.th. Continuous collaboration among communities, businesses, and authorities is critical to ensuring that cannabis use remains safe and beneficial for society.

Russia ramps up arms production amid potential conflict with NATO!

Russia is dramatically boosting its drone and missile output in preparation for a potential conflict with NATO, sparking WW3 fears. In 2025, experts report a significant increase in Russian ordnance manufacturing, escalating its strike capabilities against Ukraine. The Kremlin remains committed to expanding these capabilities, despite an upcoming peace meeting in Alaska between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) warns this development could be a precursor to a prolonged military effort in Ukraine and beyond. Russia's military has already executed over 10 massive drone and missile strikes in Ukraine, with plans to increase its strike capability to accommodate up to 2,000 drones.

Ukraine's Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) revealed that Russia currently produces approximately 170 Shahed-type drones daily. This rate is set to rise to 190 by year's end. Additionally, Russia reportedly stockpiled 600 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 300 Iskander-K cruise missiles. Experts believe if Russia maintains its missile strike frequency, its reserves will last for about two years.

This arms production surge is thought to be with future NATO confrontations in mind. The ISW asserts that Russia's focus on long-range drone and missile capabilities extends to collaborations with Belarus, Iran, China, and North Korea. These alliances aid weapons provisions and facilitate sanctions evasion.

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania could be Russia's next targets, according to specialists. Alarmingly, Russian state outlet Interfax reported Estonia's plans, backed by the European Commission, to take out a loan worth €3.6 billion (approximately 136 billion THB) to bolster defence spending.

In conclusion, Russia's arms manufacturing escalation aims at enhancing its military prowess against NATO. The global community watches as tensions rise, potentially ushering in a new era of conflict.

Judges Openly Doubt Government as Justice Dept. Misleads and Dodges Orders

Legal experts say the actions causing concern from the bench could have a more systemic effect, eroding the healthy functioning of the courts.

"... in the past several months, as members of President Trump’s Justice Department have repeatedly misled the courts, violated their orders and demonized judges who have ruled against them, some jurists have started to show an angry loss of faith in the people and the institution they once believed in most.

The dissolution of these traditional bonds of trust — known in legal circles as the presumption of regularity — goes well beyond judges’ use of blunt words — “egregious,” “brazen,” “lawless” — to describe the various parts of Mr. Trump’s power-grabbing policy agenda.

    ...

While it is impossible to know for sure how deeply this distrust has set in among judges across the country, a number of judges in recent weeks have openly questioned the fundamental honesty and credibility of Justice Department lawyers in ways that would have been unthinkable only months ago.

Thais are set to enjoy a tax-free advantage on foreign income. The Revenue Department is fast-tracking new legislation that will exempt Thai individuals from income tax on foreign-sourced earnings, which is expected to take effect this year. Once introduced, the law will allow Thai individuals to import foreign-earned income into Thailand tax-free within a two-year period.

Pinsai Suraswadi, the director-general of the Revenue Department, emphasised that this move could provide a significant economic boost. Thai individuals collectively hold approximately 2 trillion baht in foreign income. By repatriating these funds, the economy could see a significant lift. The measure aims to reduce the reluctance of Thai investors to move their profits back home due to current tax concerns.

Investments made abroad often promise higher returns, which prompts many Thai investors to seek opportunities outside of the domestic market. However, the current tax system discourages Thai investors from repatriating their earnings back to Thailand. Currently, personal income tax rates in Thailand range from 5% to 35%, depending on the level of income.

In related developments, the cabinet recently supported the Finance Ministry's proposal to exempt personal income tax on capital gains from digital assets. This includes cryptocurrencies from January 2025 until December 2029. This move aims to attract foreign funds into the Thai crypto market and provide another channel for economic stimulation.

The proposed foreign income tax law is expected to have a retrospective effect. This means that even income earned and brought into the country before the law is enacted might benefit from the exemption. The final details, however, await discussion within the Finance Ministry, reported the Bangkok Post.

Under current legislation effective from 2024, foreign income is taxed regardless of when it is brought to Thailand. This shifts from earlier rules where only income brought in the same year it was earned would face taxation. The forthcoming regulation will reverse this, encouraging Thais to bring their money back without fearing steep taxes.

For those residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in a tax year, the Resident Rule applies, making them liable for income tax on international earnings. ThThis upcoming legislation aims to refine these rules, providing much-needed tax relief for many.

Once the ministerial regulation is published in the Royal Gazette, the law will be enforced, potentially invigorating Thailand's financial landscape through increased foreign income flows.

The UK's controversial "one in, one out" agreement with France has led to the detention of several dozen migrants in a new crackdown. This groundbreaking pilot scheme aims to swiftly return those arriving illegally across the English Channel. To the dismay of critics, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has confirmed that the first migrants could return in the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, images surfaced showing the migrants disembarking from Border Force boats in Dover, marking Day 1 of the scheme. The Home Office released footage with claims of demonstrating the inaugural stages of the pilot, including biometric checks and initial relocation procedures. Curiously, independent journalists were absent from filming, raising eyebrows among media outlets.

In a Thursday interview, Cooper reiterated the government’s stern stance but refused to disclose specific numbers of detainees to avoid aiding criminal operations. “This is a strong message: illegal arrivals will be detained and returned,” she stated, while promising to counter any legal challenges robustly.

According to Home Office figures, 155 migrants made the perilous crossing on the scheme's first day alone, reported the BBC.

A stark poster, distributed in France, forewarns potential crossers of the new removals. Displaying a person being escorted to a plane, it reads, "YOU NOW FACE BEING DETAINED AND RETURNED TO FRANCE IF YOU ARRIVE IN THE UK ON A SMALL BOAT," in both English and French. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, during the announcement with French President Emmanuel Macron, emphasised the repercussions for illegal entry: "You will face being sent back."

Scheduled to run for 11 months, the pilot will allow just as many vetted asylum seekers from France to enter the UK through a secure channel. British officials strive to refer returns to France within three days of arrival, with the French providing feedback in two weeks. Meanwhile, asylum seekers in France can apply online, undergoing rigorous checks before potential UK travel.

The influx of Channel-crossers has risen sharply, with over 25,000 in 2025 alone, a 49% surge from last year. Current laws prevent repatriation to homelands before an asylum claim is rejected, yet transfers to safe nations like France remain permissible. Critics, however, cast doubt on the initiative’s efficacy, with some calling it inadequate compared to the now-scrapped Rwanda plan.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp lamented the decision to abandon the Rwanda scheme, labelling it a "foolish error". Meanwhile, the refugee charity Care4Calais condemned the new deal as "morally repugnant," stating that genuine sanctuary should not be at the expense of others. They have mobilised a team of legal experts to defend detainees’ rights.

With opinions divided and stakes high, the UK’s latest effort to manage the migrant influx faces scrutiny from all quarters as the action unfolds in the coming months.

Sir Keir Starmer has fiercely criticised Israel's decision to overtake Gaza City, labelling it "wrong" and predicting that it will "bring more bloodshed." Israel's security cabinet, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, approved these plans despite intense warnings.

The proposed focus on Gaza City has sparked fears for hostages held by Hamas, with military leaders urging caution.

Starmer is pushing for a ceasefire, an increase in humanitarian aid, and the safe release of hostages. He stated, "This action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict." He emphasised the dire humanitarian situation and the need for a diplomatic solution, excluding Hamas from Gaza's future.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey joined the criticism, deeming Netanyahu's actions "utterly abhorrent" and warning of further devastation to Gazans' lives. He urged the UK government to halt arms sales to Israel and impose sanctions on Netanyahu and his cabinet.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary David Lammy is set to meet US Vice President JD Vance in the UK, with discussions expected on US-UK relations and the ongoing tension in Gaza. The UK's recent stance on recognising a Palestinian state if certain conditions aren't met by Israel has put it at odds with both Israel and the US, as reported by the BBC.

The United Nations has raised concerns about the potential catastrophic impacts on both Palestinians and hostages. Netanyahu's office detailed plans to seize control of Gaza City while promising humanitarian aid outside conflict zones, aiming to disarm Hamas and reshape Gaza's governance.

As the tension rises, the implications remain uncertain, and international opposition continues to grow. The future of Gaza hangs in the balance amidst a complex web of diplomatic and military manoeuvres.

An Australian tourist, who has not been named, has filed a police complaint after what he described as two women, but one identified as a biological female and the other a transgender, allegedly stole cash from his hotel room in Pattaya during the early hours of the morning of 9 August.

The incident was reported to Pol Lt Col Saijai Kamjulla, an investigator with Pattaya City Police Station, at around 04:00. The theft took place in a hotel on Soi 12, Central Pattaya Road.

According to the victim, the incident began at approximately 03:00, when he was walking along Pattaya Beach and encountered an attractive woman who claimed to be from Laos. She allegedly told him she was reluctant to go alone and asked to bring along a friend, who she described as a ladyboy. The tourist agreed and took both back to his hotel room.

While the visitor took a shower, the pair reportedly slipped away. When he checked, he found that 7,000 baht in cash had disappeared from his wallet. Believing the two women to be responsible, he immediately contacted the police.

Investigators have now launched a search for the suspects.

A dramatic twist in the saga of 'Alligator Alcatraz' unfolded on Thursday as U.S. District Judge Kathleen Mary Williams slammed the brakes on further construction of the controversial detention centre.

Following two intense days of testimony, the judge granted a temporary restraining order, suggesting possible environmental damage to Florida’s precious Everglades.

Although the current facility can still accommodate detainees, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Mary Williams has severely restricted any further development for the next 14 days. This move offers a reprieve for environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe, who have fiercely contested the project. The centre sits just 50 miles from Miami, deep within the Everglades, posing a threat to endangered species like the Florida panther and sacred lands like the Miccosukee.

Miccosukee Chairman Talbert Cypress voiced relief, hailing the pause as a crucial step in defending their homeland. In contrast, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier blasted the ruling, insisting it fails to halt operations entirely and vowing to challenge the decision. The battle lines are drawn, with both sides primed for further legal skirmishes.

The controversy revolves around the absence of environmental impact assessments, which plaintiffs contend were essential prior to the construction of the centre. State officials assert the facility sidesteps federal environmental laws, adding another layer to the heated legal debate.

The facility, constructed with federal funds but run by the state, straddles a murky jurisdiction, leaving courts and officials perplexed.

Governor Ron DeSantis claims Florida is executing federal immigration policies, with promises of reimbursement left unfulfilled. This adds complexity to an already fraught situation, once considered a key component of the US president's ambitious deportation plans.

Alligator Alcatraz’s lightning-fast creation transformed the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport into a massive, 3,000-capacity detention site. The facility’s proximity to crucial tribal lands has sparked fierce resistance, with the Miccosukee Tribe joining litigation efforts last month to protect their historical and cultural heritage.

As court hearings continue next week, eyes will remain fixed on Miami to see how these complex legal and environmental issues are resolved. The halt on construction may be temporary, but it underscores significant regional tensions and unresolved questions about jurisdiction and environmental stewardship.

Today, our second grade boy at a so called top private school had class from home online due to some kids being sick. Notebooks open, teacher reads the questions, students answer. Two issues: 1) she never provided an explanation (ie teach). 2) parents in the background can be heard relaying the answers to their kids. Once an answer is shouted by a kid the teacher responds “very good”. Moved to next question.
Ignoring the fact that 2nd graders are dealing with divisions and multiplication, I got the impression that she just wanted to move fast finishing the session. It was made to look like a race of who can answer (or whose parent could answer) first.
Spelling or word lessons no different. Mixture of simple three letter words like “red” are taught together with words like “acknowledge”. Kids end up memorizing difficult words rather than learning to sound them.
Classic example of pretending to be high achievers is as good as being one.
