  1. Just a quick update people.

I finally decided to go with OLA and the owner was very friendly (and spoke good English). I received all the relevant paperwork off them a few days ago and have now booked a flight to KL to get the visa.

jonboy, as long as you're not bothered about actually getting any tuition, then you should be OK! wink.gif

I trust you saw the post below from less than a week ago:

I have been in Phuket around 3 weeks now. myself and about 3/4 others were due to start class on the 1st September however we have all sent emails to OLA and nobody has had a reply/any contact in a week!!!

    Lol

Actually I have always gotten replies very fast off them. I think most peoples email problems are when they send the emails via their website. I spoke to the receptionist on the phone and she actualyy was useless.Probably best to chat to the owner direct like I did. He picks up straight away or gets back to me within 30 minutes.

If I only get a visa out of it then it has served its main purpose. But I expect I will get more but who knows until then.

  2. I have found a couple of Thai websites that do it but as you say about the LPG prices.....maybe better to hang fire a while until we see what the prices change to or if they even change at all.

Yes and while you're "hanging fire" you're loosing any additional likely savings for an undetermined amount of time or chance of recovering your investment before prices change  ... In any case they aren't going to change over night any substantial amount, it will be gradual, kinda like buying into a stock on it's way up not knowing it's ceiling or future instead of while it's at the bottom, not a very well reasoned approach IMO.

    kinda agree

its gonna take a while to raise cooking gas from 20 baht kg to 30-40 bahtkg, thats from 10 baht/liter to 15-20 baht/liter

if you can find an electronic controlled system, starting on pure diesel, opening LPG supply when cooling liquid hits 65C, and ajustable LPG blend 30-50%, I would do it now. In case pump LPG gets expensive and cooking gas remains cheap, get a T on the pipe to use a 15Kg cooking gas bottle when desired

From the newspaper articles I have read it looks as if they plan to start the price hike in August-October time(I know they have threatened to do this for about 3 years now but they seem more determined to do it this time). From what I can gather they will raise it (if they even do it at all) by about 3 baht per quarter for 4 quarters. So this is why I wanted to wait, just to see if they do it this month or next.

T pipe? Does that not sound a little unsafe? :o

I have a car that uses LPG 100% already so that is why it is O.K. for me to "hang fire"

  4. I have searched and searched but CURRENT information on this does not seem to exist.

If I were to buy a Fortuner/Vigo (not yet bought) which one should I chose when thinking about alternative fuel costs. I know that the NGV tank is very big and heavy and cannot go a great distance unless you have an even bigger tank installed. Also that with LPG the higher temperature effects your valves unless the problem is addressed etc. etc.

The information I can't find is an actual comparison (within Thailand) of the fuels baht/Km. The car compared does not have to be a Fortuner....this is just an example. Below are the options I think I face.

    2.7 using normal 91 benzine

    2.7 using LPG

    2.7 using NGV

    3.0 using normal diesel

3.0 using 50/50 (or whatever is the recommended %) diesel/LPG

3.0 using 50/50 (or whatever is the recommended %) diesel/NGV (is this one even possible?

I ask for Baht/Km. as petrol and diesel burn at different rates and NGV is sold by KG etc. It all starts to get a little confusing which is actually cheaper. I'm pretty sure the answer is the NGV but not overly keen on getting NGV due to tank size and wanted to know which was the close second.

As a secondary question.....does anybody know accurate conversion prices for the different systems and maybe even a few links?

    Thanks

  5. Now thats what I call a speedy reply. Thanks.

30 Baht is a very good price to Chaing Mai. Is that to the bus station on a bus or to your home?

Do they have other things that you can order e.g. nan bread, samosa, saffron etc(will they get to you in edible condition)?

  6. I too love samosas. If you ever go to Bangkok, try Little India. Opposite the new, sort of department store, at the entrance to the soi with lots of shops in it, is a family that makes delightful samosas. If you continue down that soi, about 100 metres , is an excellent Indian grocery shop.

    Hi afarang

Could you please tell me how much you pay for your MTR meals and how many you order for them to deliver. Also is their a minimum order(how much is your delivery charge?)?

Do the meals include the rice or do I have to buy/make seperately?

    Are they good portions?

Do you have any recommended dishes?

Also is their a website to this shop?

    Many thanks

  7. Thanks all for your help.

I will be using them when my current visa expires in a few months.

Will check back then to see if digital gave us an update about his experiences.

    What made you commit?

From what digital said it shows they can get the right paperwork.

I did a lot of googling and found reference to them supplying teachers to schools in the past(which to me shows they weren't just set up recently)

Also I asked the same question on ajarn.com and got the reply that they are one of their sponsers and have been around for a while under the name OLA Academy.

But like I said....I will try to confirm with digital before I hand over the cash.

  8. the topic is about OLA and who they are.

So does anyone else know of them, no advertisements for other language centers or other comments please.

I have sent them an email, but as of yet no reply.

As Beano said....back on topic please.

Has anybody else used OLA school yet?

Also Beano I sent them an email (I sent direct to them and didnt use their online message form) and received a message back from them in just a few hours.

  9. If you want to spend less there are definitely cheaper schools but you get what you pay for. If that school got in trouble with the immigration do not fool yourself, you will be in trouble too and explaining to the immigration that you thought they were a good school etc will not help much.

Walen School - ED visa most reliable assistance.

Why would a student get into trouble with immigration if he/she has enrolled with a school which is accredited and authorised by the Ministry of Education? Does this not mean that its teaching methods (and presumably attendance/online class completion records) have been recognised as acceptable? If it's good enough for the MoE to issue the paperwork for a visa (and subsequent visa to be issued by a Thai consulate), under what circumstances would a student find themselves in difficulty if he/she had complied with the study requirements which had been authorised by the MoE?

Exactly. It seems to me MacWalen is trying out his scare tactics.

MacWalen unless you have any real evidence please refrain from bad mouthing them. I only want first hand experiences.

Has anybody else other than digital signed up with them or even heard of them before?

  10. Sound fantastic for a quick get away thanks.

If i was to rent a motor bike for the day...how big/small is the island eg. how long would it take if i went to "X" beach (furthest away) to Pan and Davids? It only looks small but its on a map lol. Do i need to look for a beach or accomadation near there place or is the island that small it doesnt matter?

    Cheers
