  1. I have a Cambodia driver's licence. Cambodia does not issue international licences. I heard (rumor?) that Cambodia,Thailand,Laos and Vietnam licences are accepted in each other's country without the international status. Is that true? Is mine good in Thailand?

  2. Interesting posts. Last year when I was extending my bike papers for another month (me and bike were from Cambodia) at Tachilek border they mistakenly thought I wanted to take my bike across border. Well before i knew what was going on they had papers for my bike and me to cross. lol

It took more time to straighten this out than getting across border papers. The Thai side and Burma side were extremely nice and going out of their way to accommodate me during both situations. Bearing in mind that I was being very patient and very respectful. I ask a couple of border officials "where could I have gone over land if I did cross?" and they said depends on where I wanted to go. Kind of a grey area answer. I will be back there this December or January and will find out exactly where I can go over land travel with my own bike,if possible. It would be an amazing trip to enter at Tachilek and exit at Mae Sot.

  3. I travel mostly in the north.South is very different. The north is much cheaper and the people more friendly. You should enjoy CM. It is a nice city and lots to do. Too bad you are skipping Pai. It is kicked back and pretty. If you do go I can tell you to check Pai cookery school. Lady there is a friend of mine and the cooking class is excellent. Mention my name Tyler and you will get big smiles. Yellow Sun bar is nice as well. Owner's name is Book and also a friend. The Bee Bop is a club there that usually has good live music. Lot of artistic people in Pai. An interesting place. Hope the rest of your trip is great. Thailand really is a wonderful place.

  4. It amazes me how uneducated long term expats are about the Karaoke scene in Chiang Mai and how it actually works. If you're a long term expat why you getting a tuk tuk driver to take you anywhere anyway? I've been to every single Karaoke there is in Chiang Mai never had a problem and i'm sorry but karaoke is not just for Thai's and japanese.

Would you share your knowledge? It sounds like it would be possible to go and not get into trouble if I know how things worked.

I've got the basics from the other posts. You pay for every minute a girl sits with you. Pay for every drink as it comes. Have lot's of money on hand. What else?

I'd love to share but Thai Visa won't allow me to post links to information that would help people in this area

How about trying "search image with google" using ThaiSold's avatar.

  5. “It was all captured on a CCTV camera and I have got the option to press charges,” he says, “but retribution does not thrill me. I just want to warn others.”

I wouldn't worry about retribution, but spending several days in a police station pressing charges, knowing all the time that at best the attackers will get a 500 baht fine, would deter me too.

Since the tuk tuk mafia is running that town, and other towns, the only thing to do is stay away from them at all times. Just like one would stay away from any organised crime gang. And no, it is not just a few bad apples, virtually every tuk tuk driver in the country is a scumbag!

"virtually every tuk tuk driver in the country is a scumbag!" That's a load of BS.

  6. MAE HONG SON, March 18 - Illegal 'slash and burn' agriculture in Thailand's North has worsened the air quality in this northern province where dust particles have reached the record level of 200 microgrammes per cubic metre, a health official said today.

Mae Hong Son health officer Paisal Tanyavinitkul said the smog and dust from forest fires has covered this northern province for over a week and the health office has provided 30,000 masks for distribution to people.

People have been told to wear masks when they leave homes and refrain from outdoor exercise, said the doctor.

An air quality survey by the Office of Natural Resources and Environment found 31 hot spots throughout Mae Hong Son, including the tourist town of Pai where an average 24-hour dust level was measured at 205 microgrammes.

Children and elderly people at risk at this dust level, according to the office. The standard level is 120 microgrammes.

OK. Its official , the Smog is here but so far its only just starting to drift in but enough to make your eyes sore when walking about and driving a motorbike in Chiang Rai City . You can see the colour of the sun has changed due to having the haze filter attached to it ,biggrin.png . As for breathing that smog in , I am not sure how badly it affects us all in the long run , death I expect sooner than what we planned.

A couple of years ago it was snowing black soot , it was so bad you couldnt see 50mtrs ahead of you. I hope we never ever experience that again . Maybe a gas mask and regular filter changes are needed instead of those paper masks people are wearing but I suppose they are better than just breathing it neat into your lungs.

If you are planning on Visiting the North or moving here , just remember the burning season , its every year without fail , it just depends on which way the wind blows , or if we get a some rain to turn it in to acid rain to see how unlucky we are.

Lets hope we get wind and rain SOON , before it gets too bad.

The government safe level of 120 Mgrms has been passed already to reach 205Mgrms , I wonder what the microgram level of pollution was when we had black snow , it must have been off the scale , frightning .

I was riding from Mae Sariang to Mae Hon Son 4 days ago and I almost choked from all the smoke. It was really bad. I feel sorry for the people living there. When I got to Pai it was no where nearly as bad. In Chiang Rai now and a lot of haze. Only advantage being that is cool here today from blockage of the sun.lol

  7. New Italian style restaurant in Bandu. It is very classy and the Pizza is outstanding. The menu has much more to include spaghetti and Italian dishes. It is called Dui Dui and is located between Sintanee 5 and Sintanee 7, off of Pongphrabat road. I am sold on the quality of food and good service.

Lets see if I can better explain, it is kind of out of the way. Taking Phahon Yothin road (Route 1) going towards Mae Sai, Turn Left on Phongphrabat road (1511), drive 1.15 kilometers, turn left on Ban Du Soi 4 (not marked), it is the Soi before bright Orange convenience store. On Soi 4 Drive approximately .21 kilometers and it is on the left. Unfortunately, just street parking. Next to Wat Ban Rai. Had Spaghetti last night for 35 Baht, Medium Pizza 65 baht and a glass of wine for 60 baht. Too bad the location is out of the way, because the food and prices are reasonable and the ambiance is relaxing. I like the competition and variety of these business ventures popping up in the Rai. Hope they get the customer base to stay in business!

    Telephone: 052-020413

I'm embarrassed to report I've tried twice to find the restaurant, to no avail. I can't even find 1511!

Some added information, the owner used to have the Dutch restaurant downtown Chiang Rai city which is now closed.

How about a google map display?

  8. Enjoying my stay so far in Chiang Rai. Great place, great people.

Had a query: Can I get a 30 day tourist extension done with the immigration office in Mae Sai?
Also want to know location of customs office in Mae Sai to extend my import/export papers for my motorcycle.
    Thanks.

Please excuse my ignorance and many questions. I have a tourist visa. I am in Chiang Rai city. I know there is an Immigration Office in Chiang Mai city that I can go do my 30 day extension. Wondering if I can do the same in Mae Sai,with out crossing the border? Your comment about "residing there" has thrown me off.

    Again,thanks for trying to help.

  10. What visa expires March 5? Do you have a two entry tourist visa and have only used one entry? You can use the second entry at any time up to expiration date for a new 60 day entry at any border. But you have not said what you have.

Sorry about that. I have a 60 day tourist visa. I know I can extend for 30 days but I am staying in Chiang Rai and would prefer to just go to Mae Sai for another 60 day visa,if possible. I believe my current visa is only single entry.

  11. I can also use the crossing at Savanakhet so maybe they will accept an e-visa.

Only if Cambodia invades and conquers Laos before you get there mate.

If you have a Cambodian E-Visa you can use it at only the following two border-crossings with Thailand:

    Poi Pet (Banteay Meanchey)

Once in Cambodia you can leave at any border-srossing, ie, you don't have to leave the same one you entered from.

E-Visa can be used at Koh Kong crossing as well
