You are suspiciously vague about the precise period over which you've been buying the gold.  Perhaps hiding what a pathetic investment it's been in real terms?

Yet another assuming expert. How am I hiding a pathetic return? Quoted how much I paid on average and how much its worth today, not simple enough for you?

And the time frame less than 7 years as that's how long I have been here I would say around 5.

Amazing how every one thinks they know everything about other people businesses.

Did notice, however, that the current price is the same as it was in 2013, so in seven years it's simply gone nowhere and not a single baht in income.  (And pre-2013 the price was higher.)  That's pretty dire.  You'd have been better off putting the money in a bank savings account.

Over the last few years I have been buying and selling Thai gold bars at a cost average of 19846baht/baht. I currently have 37 baht and todays value is 24800baht/baht. So 37 x (24800-19846)=183,298baht profit if I sold today. Bit better thank banks.

Just wonder why so many people hate gold.

Go to Singapore. Gold isn't taxed on sale. Trustworthy, honest. You can also get storage there as well. You're crazy to do this in Thailand

I did this with some silver. Bought 4 x 100 ounce bars. Problem was I couldn't sell them in Chiang Mai had to go back to Singapore.

Wanted to sell 1 bar but visited heaps silver shops around Walai Road. They didn't want anything that big. I contacted the company I bought them off and they would buy them back no problem. Problem came when I tried to insure them to ship back. Most would not do and the one transport company that would wanted a fortune. End the end it was cheaper for me to fly there, sell, stay one night and fly back next day.

I like to do with Thai gold as it is as easy as going to the bank to get cash.

Prices and commission rates are shown at every shop and can change several times during the day. The commission on bars is quite small and you CAN negotiate lower commission for larger amounts (say 80 baht weight for example)

I have bought and sold these type bars in Chiang Mai awhile now. I have never paid a commission on 5 baht or greater size bars and never had to bargain. Yes I paid on the 1 and 2 baht bars. Usually buy at one gold shop in Wororot Markets. They charge a 200 baht commission per baht weight on less than 5 baht bars. Sold a 1 baht bar the other day at gold shop in local Big C and they charged 300.

Except that it's only 35% proof, hence it's cheap like low alcohol whiskies in the UK.

Do you mean percent alcohol or proof? They are different. Proof is twice the percent alcohol content. So an alcohol drink  with 40% alcohol content is 80 proof.

Never seen a bottle in real life. But it looks nice.

Actually tastes ok. Took photo of bottle where it was served in Pattaya. Been looking around for awhile for it in Chiang Mai and found it at Big C. Cheap too, about 269 for a 640ml bottle.

This isn't about comparing thai whiskey with a single malt or a good scotch. OP asked a question about thai whiskey, and then 90% of the replies are totally irrelevant. Thai people don't drink whiskey neat, they even mix Johnny Walker Black Label with coke. So far only one thai whiskey has been mentioned, Blend 285. Mix it with a lot of coke like thai people do, then it will taste like a cheap scotch. After a few glasses you won't be able to tell the difference between a scotch and Blend 285.

Actually I mentioned Grande which is a Thai blended spirit but as I mentioned I am not sure what it is classed as. I ordered a whisky drink and got this.

PS. Just copied this from their Facebook. "High quality grand liquor. Easy to drink. Comfortable neck. Suitable for new generation. It's another quality choice for both whiskey and Brandy."

Not that it would surprise me, but where in the world did you read that?

"Anyway, reading the posts in this thread makes it obvious that being an alcoholic doesn't mean you're an expert on booze".

  10. I recently went to a show and was asked what I wanted to drink. I asked for a scotch and was given Grande which tasted nice to me. Even my gf who drinks very little liked it. I asked to see the bottle and it is a blended spirit made in Thailand. So I don't really know if it is a scotch or not. I looked around and found it at my local Big C. I also don't mind Blend 285.

I used to make spirits in Australia as a hobby and they are are all ethanol based alcohol with added flavours. Apparently a Canadian whisky is made the same way but I can't remember the name. This was told to me by a Canadian

Tell that to all the people who bought gold over the last five years and held.  they are ALL making money.

If gold goes from 1 to 1,000,000 it's NOT a bad investment because someone paid 1,000,000.  Only for a select few.  if that's the case, then everything is bad because everyone doesn't make money all the time.

I have been buying and selling Thai gold (bars not jewellery) for a few years now and currently have 37 baht at an average value of 19846baht/baht. So my position is good at the moment. Even after this mornings 600 baht drop I have a profit (on paper) of over 140,000baht. I believe will go over the 27,000 a poster mentioned.

I used to buy silicone mould rubber from Likisin Art and Craft Shop, 41/5 Sripoom Rd., located inside the moat between Sripoom Corner and Chang Puak Gate.

They might still have it, as well as other casting supplies you may need.

    Good luck with your projects.

    Thanks for the info.

You can find resin and moulds on the internet very easily. Lazada for the resin, Banggood for the moulds.

Yep, thanks for that. I just bought my first batch resin from Lazada, but I was asking if anyone knew of a shop that I can go into and pick what I want. Just bought an item from China (Lazada), looked like what I wanted but when arrived it was not, totally useless for me.

Sounds like you invested in some pretty poor companies. You should read a tad about Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett. They never invest in companies headed to zero. I'd say that anyone who does better investing in gold than they can do in the stock market is a poor investor and does little to no research on the companies they buy shares in. If you had put your money in a good mutual fund you'd be FAR ahead of whatever you made on the gold.

You think I wanted to invest in companies to goto zero?

My biggest loss is I paid a financial advisor for investment advise and lost $aud50,000 over 10 years in his advise.

Low reward for a BIG risk. That's less than $5,000 US dollars in profit. TINY considering the risk. Gold is one of the worst investments a person can make. It doesn't grow. It just fluctuates based on the issues in the world. Invest in companies that GROW where you can triple your money or more rather than playing with gold that is range-bound.

Really? Gold will never goto zero. A considerable number of my shares have and will NEVER get that money back. The gold here combined with 100kg of silver in Australia I am doing quite ok at the moment. Yes prices can drop but never to zero like some of my shares.
