Typically, migrants work 12-hour days, get one day off a month and are paid around half the province's 147 baht (HK$34.68) daily minimum wage.

    REUTERS

Sorry, I'm a little confused; so is the report saying that these people are earning ฿73.50 per 12 hour day or that the province's daily minimum wage is ฿294? :o

  2. talking about this Jack Golf 's visarun service, it sucks!

a friend of mine tried their service last week, it was a tiny minvan, no movies. almost forgot, the maker of that van is also korean , " Kia".

Yep, well there are pro's and con's with the little van Isaanlover. FWIW I used to do border runs to Aranyaprathet/Poipet with East Meets West Travel until proof of onward travel was mandated; and you're right...the van is tiny and there are no movies (or coffee or toilet facilities), but the good thing about the van is that it's pretty nippy so there's a high degree of probability you'll actually be back in Bangkok at the advertised time (4:30pm). So I guess it ain't all bad. :o

  3. "I'm proud to call myself an Aussie," said the elated teen, who was told yesterday that she had been granted an orphan visa.

.........and we Aussies are proud to have her here. :D

Now if only there was a reciprocal arrangement so that the Thais would make it easier for Australians to obtain permanent residence in LOS. :o

  4. I am having the Wealthly Healthly WH6000 plan that covers up to 1.5M Baht. Also have out-patient and have used that once with no problem - no cash needed. Cheers!

I too am looking at this but cant make my mind up, so many choices !

Firefan, if you dont mind me asking what did you pay for the WH6000 plan ?

    Hey taxin! :o

It seems that Thai Health Insurance's English web site is still under construction with regard to detailing what you actually get for their WH6000 plan. You can however get a personalized quote by clicking here. :D

  5. My Vulcan logic was for a visa entry extension of stay - for a visa exempt entry my logic would say it will be counted at part of the 90 days and another entry will receive a 23 day permitted to stay stamp (if they notice it).

Hmmm...I guess we're going to have to wait 'til next month (right?) before we can get a definitive answer. By the way cali, as of writing do you have any plans to do another 7-day extension to this, your current 30-day visa exempt entry? :o

  6. well i am totally free with food, as no one should starve. and occasionally i let someone sleep at my place, though i always make it known it is not indefinitely. and i won't lend more than 1000 baht and that is only in dire circumstances. i certainly would NOT help someone who needed a fix, other than pointing them in the direction of a hospital. i think that is all fair. but others don't, and i get a lot of pressure from these people, and i am rather sick of them thinking i am jesus christ!!!!

Hypothetical question girlx; I do hope you'll humor me...

Would you rather stay as you are, living comfortably with seemingly a lot of 'friends' or be fabulously wealthy, have every material object you've ever wanted...but have no friends? :o

  7. too many inconsistencies to be true.....but if this sort of story prevents other w***ers from going to Thailand then its all good.

I cant believe that 6 pages have been attributed to this and worse......I cant believe I have read it all and replied also.... :D:o

Ah ha, you're not the only one gburns. This tale has been like watching a train wreck and of course you know how hard it is to stop rubber-necking one of those! :D

  8. Yes, have heard similar rumours from time to time.

The Loations of course as you may well know do still have a war going on. Their remains parts of the country that are strictly "verboten" to foreigners - the Northern and Central areas where they remain after all these years still fighting the CIA's friends - the Hmong ethnic minority - who get treated atrociously my the Loation military. Not much differnet to how Myanmar treats some of it's ethnic minoroties. Differnance is, the Loation conflict has not been much of an attractive media issue. Often wondered why little concern is expressed by the international community (?)

There's no oil (is there?) that's probably why. :o

  9. Great write-up georgebkk, thanks very much for taking the time to post with so much detail! :o

I do have a few questions though, if you will humor me please: :D

#1. From what city in LOS did you travel from to get to Mukdahan? (I'm hoping you're gonna say Bangkok)

#2. What time of the day do you need to leave for Mukdahan if one wishes to arrive in Savannakhet nice and early?

#3. Chronology wise, how long 'should' it have taken you; from start to finish, if you hadn't missed your bus that 2nd afternoon?

Thanks again and take care. :D

  10. Hello again skyblues,

I’m sorry but for some reason I couldn’t edit my last post (above) and having reread what you wrote, plus your additional comment:

    ######,,does that include gettin a 60 dayer???

I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing anything. Here’s a very quick question then as I would hate to see you get into difficulty at the border.

How many 30-day ‘Visa On Arrival’ (VOI) stamps have you had in your passport during the past 180-days? It’s just that when you write “iv had many 30 day tourist visa”, I was wondering if in fact you meant VOI; which is quite different from an actual Tourist Visa (TV). As I’m sure you know but if you’ve already had three VOIs stamped into your passport during the past 180-day period (and you have no other type of valid visa), I don’t think you’ll be allowed back in to LOS without getting yourself a TV first; can someone else confirm this please?

Again referring to your additional comment:

    ######,,does that include gettin a 60 dayer???

I believe you’re in fact making reference to a TV and not the VOI. While a TV (issued in S.E. Asia at least) has a validity of 3-months, the 60-day entitlement to stay in LOS (duly stamped into your passport when you arrive) begins from the day you enter using said visa. Then you may extend for a further 30-day period by visiting Immigration before your 60-day entitlement expires and paying a fee of 1,900 baht.

I hope this is of help to you. :o

  11. My mate went the other day to the Cambodian border, he said you do need onward travel documents, I think a plane or train ticket out of the country is acceptable.

Yep, that seems to be correct (as of writing anyway) bkkmadness but as with everything that relates to the immigration service - this seems to be very much a 'work in progress'. :D

Hey skyblues...here's a couple of threads that may help you out:

#1. New Developments At Ban Laem Checkpoint, 200 baht bus ticket to siem reap, &

#2. New requirement to show air ticket at land border, For 30 day stamp

I hope you find the answer specific to your circumstance and Good Luck on your trip! :o

  12. Perfect timing, I just purchased my rail ticket yesterday. The guy at the counter couldn't understand why I was happy with an upper berth. Sucker...

    Hey jeebusjones,

I just had a word with Jacks and although not yet posted on their web site they concur with Baht's report that should you use the Ban Laem (aka Pong Nam Ron)/Daung visa crossing, irrespective of whether you've purchased a rail or air ticket; you're still going to have to fork out for "that" bus ticket.

FWIW the guy I spoke with told me you can use your rail ticket for the Aranyaprathet/Poipet crossing point instead if you like, even though this fact isn't annotated on their web site...yet, if at all it will be.

    Just a heads-up for you m8! :o

  13. Spoke to a company called "ThaiVisaRun", they only go to the Ban Laem border for the visarun.

they said: everyone has to buy that bus ticket except the real visa holders and the lucky ones from Argentina, Korea, Peru, Chile, Brazil, HK, Laos, Macao, and Vietnam.

Thanks for this advice Baht. So when "they" say "everyone has to buy that bus ticket except the real visa holders" do you know whether or not this includes people like jeebusjones, who already has paid, valid proof of his departing LOS (by rail) and those who intend to provide air ticket proof? :o
