Not sure why you would quote me believing I am trying to belittle the achievement of any child.
Because your point is a given and too trivial to mention. Except perhaps for a few geniuses (which isn't being claimed for these two), students always guess on tests and it would be stupid not to. Smart guessing is a perfectly legit and recommended strategy. No doubt many of us have seen ambiguous questions in which you must choose the answer likely wanted, not the one for which you could make a case. Nor is your example taken from the actual test but merely a practice test. Whether it's representative, and of how many on the actual test, you dunno. And you dunno whether the guesses were "lucky" or simply shrewd.
QuoteYou should maybe get more sleep.
Maybe you should. We got that out of the way now? You really ever been a teacher?
QuoteAs a teacher, I'm very student centric in my approach to teaching and couldn't care less about nor disagree more with the "Teacher can never be wrong" mentality.
Good. 'A' for the day, teach. But the task for these students wasn't to care or disagree with that mentality--no doubt they know it well--but to ace those tests. Which they did, admirably. Go, Pattaya!

We don't actually care what the cops say. We already know.
We'll see how this thread goes. Fortunately the man has survived thus far. But normally any balcony dive creates a major stir throughout the vast CSI: TVF network. It spreads like a virulent STD from the local Pattaya dicks to the vast population of off-brand wannabes free to post worldwide from their bars, rented rooms, council estates, trailer parks, 7/11 curbstones, school lunchrooms, internet cafes, park benches, retirement homes, etc. You have no idea who or where they are, esp. given all the illiteracy (from the supposed native English speakers; maybe the cat walked on the keyboard? Friend o' mine's cat does that sometimes).
Roboposting
A balcony dive thread attracts lots of roboposting from the CSI: TVF robosleuths and wannabes. It seems keyboard shortcuts are assigned to the same ol' timeworn declarations of police incompetence and corruption, accusations of bribe-taking, and doubts about the evidence at the scene. And a perp is always selected from the four on the list: the Thai wife, the gf, the ho', or the ladyboy. It almost appears as though some roboposters get up earlier in the morning to be first off the line with their robopost. But how better to start the day than by assuring oneself of one's superiority to Thais?
Of course roboposting often occurs in many other wank-topics as well, but those are beyond the scope of the present discussion.
Finally, given the powerful convergence of balcony dive and Thai police, a particularly virulent group will need to invade your dive's forum thread: the paranoids afflicted with Tic-Related Police Conspiracy OCD (TRPCOCD). Maybe even a few doomsayers to utter their prophecies of a farang Exodus and THE END. Oh, yes.
So we hear that
- the forged note,
- the Bogart last cigarette butt, and
- the chewing gum on the balcony railing
were all police plants. The true perp will never be caught or if caught will never do time! A Burmese is gonna be framed.
Avoid it, no matter how disappointed you are that the Tunnel didn't flood and plenty of tourists are walking on the Promenade. The style and dignity of your dive, with its cool nod to The Last Tango In Paris, will cheapened with red herrings thrown all over it!

What are the actual dates for the holidays in Pattaya as they seem different than Bangkok that are 13-16 ? If one is traveling from Bangkok to Pattaya on the 16th is that a busy day to travel and is coming into Pattaya early morning or late at night preferable ? Thanks
Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa ConnectLast year traffic really wasn't bad until the 18th and 19th. The 16th should be fine for your travel. Some farang water hooligans will be migrating into town from BKK but they can only afford the bus and do get up later anyway. And if you need to get near the bar areas, then early morning will also be better for you.

I believe he had to make some lucky guesses at what the writer was thinking at the time of writing the test.
Perhaps they were intelligent inferences. It seems the vast majority of other students who receive low scores just aren't lucky eh.
Well, the campaign by the old men of TVF to denigrate the students' achievements is full swing. Thais can't do math; Filipinos must have poor English; so they were superb guessers! Now if the tests were published for our ace TVF Board Of Examiners, and ALL the questions were discovered unambiguous (by the few members who could understand them) and suitably challenging, then--the examiners were bribed to mark all the answers correct! Or it was cheating--a farang, probably a TVF member (Brit), must have secretly communicated the correct answers via a phone modified to appear off!
There's no end to it.

I'd call it more holiday eating, drinking, and sexing.
From the FAQ:
Party time!
The unnecessaries are just as important as the necessaries.
You gotta treat this as a vacation at home and look forward to it. Have on hand a 9 days' supply of good booze and other mood enhancers, baccy (Friendship), vids, music (internet radio helps), vitamin V, and wimmen. (Married members should start well in advance orienting the wives to the idea of threesomes at home.)
Pamper yourself! Indulge (as only we cesspoolians can) safely, comfortably, oblivious to the hooligans reigning in the streets a la Shaun Of The Dead. You deserve it!

Often the attendants ask: phone, wallet etc?, and I respond inside my bag.
Several times I've then been told, cannot be inside a bag, must be alone in the tray?
On one occasion I listened to a security guy from AOT telling a passenger that notebook, tablets, phone and wallets cannot be inside a bag because it's makes it too difficult for the machine to detect anything untoward.
I don't believe any attendant told you that your wallet can't be in the carry on bag. If you really think that, then you misunderstood.

No, merely standard advice and NOT just a Thai solution.
Larger only if needed. Your wallet really that big? Surprised it hasn't been lightened for you numerous times already.
QuoteEnsure proper pay, CCTV and a background check.
How do you know they haven't done that? You seem blissfully unaware that CCTV verified the theft.
Anyway, they've definitely been doing exactly that in the States for many years. Yet

QuoteAnother solution (I applied on some critical staff positions) was that the staff had to be able to provide for a guarantor in form of a civil servant (employment class 10 or higher) who would sign a guarantee of B50‘000 in case of irregularities. Once that was implemented I never had a single screw nicked again - ever!
They commonly do this in Thailand (post bond and get a guarantor) and I don't think that you know they haven't done so for these security personnel. In any case, though I suppose it helps, it doesn't work all the time. Not here, anyway. Nor was a 7-year jail sentence for an "irregularity" hanging over your staff, as applied here. The thieves were reportedly handed seven year sentences by the court.
But, for the purposes of schoolmarming and bashing, we've greatly exaggerated the problem at Swampy in proportion to the number of passengers going thru there yearly.
So then, much to our chagrin, we're forced to conclude that, despite all our hot air, we really don't have any sure-fire solutions, it's not just a Thai airport problem, and that the standard security precaution of stowing your wallet inside your carry-on bag does seem worth mentioning by K. Kittipong.

Done that many times. No problem at all. The problem is believing all scary things people write all the time. That´s my opinion, and I already know that you don´t share that.
But it's not a matter of believing anything scary, though that may be a convenient assumption. A comprehensive fix using official sources is simply a superior solution to adopt--if one knows how to do so--for exactly the practical reasons given in the article cited. I'd only download a .dll if I didn't couldn't figure out the real problem and didn't know what else to do.

One of your startup programs was incompletely installed. That .dll is part of the M'soft's Visual Studio 2010 runtime. You'll need install (reinstall) it. Install both unless you're running an x86 system:

1. Yes. 2. No, most Americans speak Standard English perhaps with a regional but still intelligible accent. Hence most Filipinos, not to mention most non-native English speakers, do speak better English than Brits, most of whom speak some dialect, unable to use Received Pronunciation.

Could these type of posts in a thread specifically designed to save these people the trouble of posting indicate the IQ of people who enjoy Songkran? I thought only very drunk people and children enjoyed it, but the category of people with low mental capacity deserve an honourable mention.
There's quite a bit of overlap between the drunks and the IQ impaired.

I have no knowledge re the North Pattaya Bus Station. If anyone does, could you post a thread under that title ? It would be more visible than if you add the information here.
The Songran FAQ already addresses that question but next year I'll make it more explicit about the North Pattaya Bus Terminal in particular for anyone not able to understand.
Q: Can I travel to or from Pattaya on the 18th or 19th?
A: Forget it. All roads around Pattaya turn into parking lots. The 19th is worse than the 18th, but, as noted, Pattaya is affected also by Naklua's Songkran on the 18th. Some, if not all, taxi services refuse to travel on the 19th.The buses leaving Pattaya do run on the 19th, surprisingly, but you'll have to get to the station on your own, heh, heh (no Bell Travel pickup) and expect long, long delays, even late in the evening.
If you think you may have a medical emergency on those days, better to get out and stay near a hospital elsewhere, because nobody's moving out the way for an ambulance.
Yes, the terminal is open as usual on the 19th. Really really.

Typical bigoted TVF thinking to blame Thais exclusively when it happens world over and most thefts are committed by other passengers of any nationality. And of course to distort the meaning of the OP to fit the narrative.
They aren't blaming the owners and this thief will be punished. And see my post above--same in many airports. If in any airport you aren't mindful of your valuables, you're the idiot.
And they're hardly protecting the image of the airport by calling attention to the problem. On the contrary.

next door neighbours you can forgive, but they too walk straight past every day without even a nod/smile or greeting.
I've found they often wait for you to offer a greeting first, being rather shy. Also Thais are not very observant of their surroundings and tend to focus on one thing at a time.
QuoteThe residents do not mix at all.
It's as if they just keep within the family group & do not welcome "outsiders" to their homes, even during festive seasons,
which I find really strange. This has been the norm for almost my entire time living here. Even the children do not mix.
Thais know that relationships w/ outsiders can quickly become sticky. They might even start asking for money.
So they keep their distance. Hardly unique to Thais among Asians. Cf. Japanese. So not really strange in context, only to you as farang. Now an upcountry Thai village is rather different, so you might move to one.
QuoteBut Thai's do have a problem with cultural differences.
Seems you're having the problem w/ the cultural difference. But Thais do have a deep and abiding awareness of who's not Thai and so must be treated differently, as farangs in fact expect and often welcome. Few farangs want a bunch of chilies dumped indiscriminately in their ka pao moo, for example. So dealing w/ a farang means extra work and a voyage into the unknown, usually unwelcome. As noted, Thais are rather shy, contrary to the impression you may receive from massage touts. Finally, there's the language barrier. Nothing goes so far towards having pleasant relationships w/ Thais as knowing Thai and speaking correctly and acting in a polite Thai manner, no matter how strange that seems. Suggests you're not one of the idiots they've encountered or heard about. Are you giving your morning greeting in perfectly pronounced Thai, with a smile? I always receive a pleasant greeting in return.

Nope, this is not a bad idea. Not a cure for what ails Songkran but a step in the right direction.

I dunno, you might. Lots of people do. I doubt you're bringing your own booze from home on that day.
QuoteThe key, as usual, is enforcement which unfortunately, is something you guys are doing a completely shit job of, Songkran or not.
No, actually they're doing a pretty good job of enforcing the alcohol-selling hours. Found that out again just yesterday.

mmmkay .. how about removing staff that are tempted
Why wait? How about your acting as a consultant since you know exactly which staff will be tempted and more importantly which will act on that temptation? Your ace expertise is sorely needed. Could make good money, since it happens worldwide. Oh--you'll need to remove the passengers too.
K. Kittipong's advice is commonplace, nothing new.
According to a report by the NBC affiliate in Miami, checkpoint thefts at the local airport can happen up to twice a week. The most thefts are attributed to fellow passengers.
--How to Protect Yourself Against Airport Checkpoint Theft
A TSA agent convicted of stealing more than $800,000 worth of goods from travelers said this type of theft is “commonplace” among airport security. Almost 400 TSA officers have been fired for stealing from passengers since 2003.

I see the police have been hard at work confiscating the PVC pipes they earlier banned. Plenty of powder. Lots more guns in the vendor's stock.
Looks like it'll be business as usual in the bar areas through the 19th. We'll see if the relative calm of the past few years continues outside those areas. Didn't even see any kids out today. :)
