  1. Hi Tywais, this is not a restaurant but only take away. I go there regularly, because it's close to were I live, and find his products excelent. I have seen the kitchen he works from at it looks all well kept and clean.

So far I had his smoked bacon, nice and dry as opposed to some of the stuff I got from the supermarket that was swimming in fluid. Also had his sausages and particularly liked the cumberlands.

I also tried his ready made meals like the lasagna and chilli and these are very tasty as well. I was there yesterday again and this time I bought his fishermans pie, beef bourguignon and chicken tikka massala.

If you would like try before you buy: Origin Café next to Lanna Thara has the Laughing Monkey's sausages and bacon on the menu.

  2. This morning I exchanged my Malaysian car and motorcycle license to the (temporary) Thai ones. My Malaysian motorcycle license was only up to 250 CC, that was no problem to change it to a full Thai one.

The only test I had to do was the color blind test and I didn't have to watch the movie. They did ask how I, given the fact I have Dutch passport, got a Malaysian license.

When I explained I lived there a couple of years all was good. The whole procedure took me about an hour and both licenses are valid for two years.

  3. What about the restaurant next to Valley Coffee, is that still open? I kind of liked that one, though food options have been less recently.

When I cycled passed that one a few weeks ago it looked closed, no water in the pond anymore and nobody around. A shame I really liked the Khao Soi at that place.

  4. I seem to remember that a repeater cuts down the transmission speed substantially??

I have an Airport Extreme to cover the ground floor and an Airport Express as a repeater upstairs.

I don't see a difference in speed when I'm connected to either one of them.

  5. Hi, we cruised around different neighbourhoods a few months back before we moved to Chiang Mai. After several days of driving around the different area's we found that Mae Hia (just north of Hang Dong on the west side), just south west of the airport, ticked most of the boxes. Since a few weeks we live in a Moo Baan close to the Royal Park Rajapruek and very much enjoy this location. Close to nature for cycling and hiking and just a short drive to Nimman road for bars and restaurants. There are also plenty of restaurants in the neighbourhood and Mae Hia wet market and the shops around it cover our daily needs. Tesco, Macro and Big-C are all nearby as well.

Be aware that in the area directly south of the Airport you might get noise from passing airplanes.

  6. Anyway, here is how non-dysfunctional countries do when H.M. has a birthday.

On a few occasions we had foreign guests, they were absolutely flabbergasted when confronted with this side of the Dutch.

Yes, the other festival that does that is the annual blackface parade. ;)

Haha, you seem to be knowledgeable about Dutch culture.

Zwarte Piet is black because he comes down the chimney they say ;)

  7. Just read in the newspaper not to be named or quoted that the National Police chief transferred 5 high ranking Chiang Mai policemen to the Bangkok head office.

Reason given: negligence of the order given on 22th July and allowing bars (entertainment venues) to be open near Chiang Mai University.

  8. (In Malaysia they don't have this problem, they call us all European, which can have an underlying meaning of questioning, affectionate, humorous, condescending, derisive and much, much more, depending on......).

I have lived in Malaysia for several years and was never called "European". They called me Mat Salleh, which comes from mad sailor, or Ang Moh, red haired (even though my hair is grey). All in good spirits and I never thought much of it.
  9. Hi, I looked at exact the same places when searching for a house last November. We ultimately opted for Nai Fan and live here now for about 3 months. What I observed so far is that it is very well kept, cleaning, garbage collection all in good order. It's very quiet, I like that, and no dogs running around free. The facilities are excellent and well maintained (possibly due to the fact they are shared with the hotel located in the Moo Baan). The location is IMO better then the other 2 you mention, by car it's about 10/15 mins to Nimman area and there are also plenty of decent restaurants nearby. I like cycling and am on quiet roads within minutes.

Canal road is overall less congested then Hang Dong road, also less heavy traffic.

I did like Lanna Pinery as well, it has a bit of the same feel as Nai Fan, but wasn't to impressed by KPV 9. To big, to many empty spots, to far from the city and overall maintenance not as good as the other two IMO.

  10. The Hague does them (Non-O multiple entry) and so does the consulate in Antwerp. I know several Dutch who got them there successively without a problem. In the region Penang does them as well but according to the flyer they hand out at the consulate you need to maintain a minimum of 800K baht for 3 months in a Thai bank account. As far as I know police and medical report are not needed for this type of visa.

I think Penang is probably only offering single entry O visas (one 90 day stay) based on what you wrote with the purpose of later applying for the annual retirement extension in Thailand. It's weird they would require full seasoning for that because actually only two months seasoning is needed for the first retirement extension and you could do that during the last 30 days of your 90 day single entry O stay. Thus really no seasoning would really be needed at the Penang stage for the later retirement extension as long as the balance stays over 800K for two months prior to the application. That all said, I think you have probably not conveyed the exact text you saw there. True for such an O at Penang you would not need medical or police form as that is not an O-A visa.

Another example, you can CONVERT a 30 day stamp or tourist visa entry to a 90 day O visa at Bangkok using the 800K bank method but the money does NOT need any seasoning a the date of the conversion. It is only needed later (two months first time) at the date of the annual retirement extension application. Of course other financial methods can be used for the conversion and extension as well -- embassy income letter or combo method income letter plus banked money.

I'm just giving the information I got when I went for my Non-O visa in March. I used my Malaysian HSBC account for financial proof, based on that they gave me a single entry but they made it clear both verbally and in flyer they handed me that next time I could apply for a multiple entry Non-O if I had 800K for a minimum of 3 months in a Thai bank account. In the mean time I already extended my Non-O here in Chiang Mai where I live now.

I see now they also ask for the funds to be in a fixed deposit account.

Mmm, trying to upload a scan of the paper they gave me but that doesn't seem to work on iPad.

Here is a link to the file in my Dropbox:

I agree it doesn't make much sense but this is how they do it in Penang.
