  1. Visa expiration is not a problem, nor is leaving the country for a few months. After a long time (Yr+) your account may go dormant if there is no usage(get online banking and debit card before you leave).

I've never had a problem converting to bills and you should not be hitting issue with maximums unless you are talking crazy money. In this case you will be much better served just wiring the funds to your other account.

    Thanks

  2. TV,

What would happen to any investments or bank accounts when your visa expires? Would they still be save if you left the country for a few months/years after your visa expired and then returned?

Also, I recall that I had trouble exchanging Bhat into "hard" currency in LOS. I think I had to use a thai national and used her to make the exchange, can t recall. Is there a limit in how much bhat can be changed into "hard" currency?

    Thanks

  3. TV,

I like the Moo Gaa ta s. Really great value. I know your not gonna get the best quality food considering the price, but I would like to think that it's safe to eat in such places. Awhile back I had heard that they put borax? into the meat. How true is this and how would it be if you at meats laced with that stuff? Or should I become a vegan?

  4. Christian missionaries have been stripping children away from their families for centuries. Look at any nation where missionries have had any sort of significant influence. The history of missionaries in N.America is filled with seperated families, forced indoctrination into an alien culture and sexua/physical abuse. What these missionaries are doing in Thailand is nothing new. Take a look at history.

BTW I have witnessed the tragic results of all this while working with aboriginal organizations.

  5. Crime rates in Thailand are under reported. There are no doubt quite a few attacks/murders that fo unreported and the reality in Thailand does not always match the LOS image the gov t tries to instill in tourists. I am also amazed at the fact Thailand has the highest murder rate via firearms in the world. This may in part be due to the lack of information gathering in other nations, but the reality is that death by firearms is quite high. Having said that I believe that attacks/murders are not random as they are in some other nations. I have never felt under threat in Thailand, unlike in other countires.

  6. A few years ago in Pattaya with a good friend from overseas,we went to a bar and i knew the owner and some of the ladies there.

My friend ended up taken one of the ladies to his room and everything seemed fine.Next morning i knocked on his door and the door felt strangely cold, did not think much about it anyway. After breakfast the lady went somewhere and my friend told me this girl was really crazy about him because she held him very tight all night long,he did not sleep much. She came back and he went to the bathroom and she told me,-last nite very very cold!!!

LOL Sure it was too cold. HAd tokeep warm! :) lol

  7. No such place as Utopia.

Speak for yourself, I am surrounded by herds of unicorns bearing nubile tanned sloe eyed temptresses who ply me with ambrosia while satisfying my every whim. ohmy.png

You haven't left Montagar yet? ohmy.png

Ok, you got me, it's actually two dogs and a Mia who let's me drink if I behave myself and do the gardening...

    I dislike coming down too.

  8. Good thread. I too have problems with holes in socks. I tried the"hide the hole between toes" method, but it really is just a temporary "solution" . Have a pretty good collection so far. May think about weaving them all to make a little rug for my shoes!

  9. I bake my own bread all the time....and, no, I don't use a toaster oven.

I use a (cheap) gas oven (with a pan of water at the bottom) to bake my formed loaves, and an electric bread machine for std. shaped loaves.

I make all kinds of bread as I get bored easily.

The formed loaves I make include SanFran Sourdough (yes, I have a real SF sourdough culture in my fridge that I have kept alive since 2004), basic French and Italian breads (also ciabatta) and sandwich rolls, hamburger and hotdog buns, and have even made Ambasha.

Bread machine baked breads include basic wheat bread, white bread for sandwiches & toast, oat bread (which I like for making French toast), various sweet breads, jalapeno-cheese bread, etc.

I use the bread machine to make and knead the dough for my formed breads... and not to forget, pizza dough.

    I hope this helps....

EDIT: Oh, and yes, they all come out fine and YES, it's worth it!!! Where I live, all that exists is "fish bread", unless I make my own or shop out of town.

Sourdough LOL Freakin aewwsome.. Thanks. WIll give it a try...

  10. Well in the old days the Christian missionaries managed to "save" the Akha hilltribe people near Chiang Rai .

They now read their bibles and go to churches .

Prisoners of a White God is a documentary about the Akha people, produced and distributed by Twin Star in September 2008. The documentary is about a Czech researcher, Tomáš Ryška, who goes to the Thai and Laotian mountains in order to search and document the causes of wrong doing and violence done to the indigenous peoples and their children by Christian missionaries.

Yes they did a lot of harm , the missionaries, if you have a chance watch the documentary.

Should really ask about what the CEs in Pak Chong are up to! They often TALK ABOUT CHILDREN OF HILL TRIBES and the good that they are doing. Makes you wonder.

Somehow the video does not suprise me. sad.png 80% of CEs interested only in sex? WOW CEs the ultimate sex tourists? LOVE the cacking laughs of the CEs in the video. Creepy!

  11. I guess I can understand how someone can go for a BG when you factor in the weather, culture and all the other bits that go along with it, but there are so many other non BGs to chose from. I find it confusing.

Also, what about STDs? Now correct me if im wrong, but I'd read that 25% of all new hiv cases in england are from guys who have visited los and were thinkiong with the wrong head.

"I came here to build a relationship" with a bg?

Wow that is some statistic - hope you can back it up with a link?

    Thought not, utter nonsense..

Id read it several years back. I only read ligit papers. Im GUESSING it was th Gaurdian,Mail or some other similar paper. No I donthave alink. Thats why I made a post. Thought someone may have read a similar report!

    Peace brother!

  12. Are they paid well?

How much would they earn a month?

    How do they recruit?

    rolleyes.gif

As far as I am aware, the salary for a missionary is minimal, they are paid an allowance from their home church and are restricted in any other income, if they are on a missionary visa they can only earn locally what the local church they are attached to pays them, if they are found to be earning income not related to church activities they face deportation.

Some get GREAT benefits! I know a guy who was sent to CM for 3months for christian training. He was given 100bt a day for personal spneding, but was put up at the Amari??(I think, some 5 star) for 3 MONTHS! All meals were buffets! smile.png This was several years ago so that 100bt stipend wasn t that bad!

Some of these missionary types are very well funded. dont kid urself!

  14. But how high will it go? I for one have been following it for 6 months & we transfer when we think it's high but then are blown away by another jump - currency forecasting is the stuff of wizards!
