  1. Fun group of players or full of tossers?

Depends on whether I'm there or not? The Hustler is a quiet place with friendly staff. Mostly guys come to play serious game of pool (although they have one challenge table where winner stays on - I think this table runs only in the evening) with very few unattached girls hanging out in the place. That can be plus or minus of the place, depending on a person's POV.

How come no one mentions The Ball In Hands on Soi 4 (near Rajah hotel)? That used to be my hangout back in '04 and it's still around I think. I haven't returned to Soi 4 yet, on recent trips. What's the latest on this place?

Also, I've heard of Side Pocket which is apparent near Soi 5? Is that still around and any feedback on the place?

  2. Regarding Koreans ... Korean pop-culture is basically *en vogue* in Asia, thanks to popularity of K-drama, K-movies, and K-pops.

Most Asian countries now show Korean dramas. Older folks are into historical dramas and younger generations are into modern, tear-jerking love story dramas. Korean boy and girl band concerts are often sold out in hours in countries where they probably don't even understand the lyrics.

When I here in Singapore around 2001-2002, I could hardly find any Korean restaurants and now they are everywhere. BKK always had more Korean places but now there are more places and they are packed with Thais. Back when I used to live in BKK (left end of 2004), once Thais that could speak Korean words that I knew were few caddies. They could give yardage and wind direction information. Now, even my Thai ex-gf calls me "oppa" which is how a female address an older male. Some people call me "ah-juh-see" which means ... I'm getting old :-(

In Singapore, they even have Korean TV channel that is dubbed in Mandarin. Many Korean male idols are extremely popular with Asian women. Just few years, I think it was "Rain" who was mobbed at BKK airport like Beatles and MJ in the past.

I wish I was a young decent looking Korean male in BKK or anywhere in Asia. They would give "Ippun-man" run for his money.

  3. I'm not sure if I would be any different if I were rich but I wouldn't plan on signing up long term deal with someone who couldn't remember or account for how they spent 100K baht in two months. That's a lot of money to spend. If she did spend the money, that's just financially irresponsible behavior. If she didn't, then she ain't telling you the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Not to judge (I'm sure I am) but you share the blame for giving someone that level of financial "freedom" (and perhaps temptation) who's probably not have earned such trust. I remember doing similar thing myself when I was given few credit cards during and right after university at the age where I clearly couldn't handle the financial management.

I, personally, might have given her an access to an account where she had access to more limited fund (something equivalent or slightly better than her salary) that I can check and replenish through internet (if you are residing in another country). I would also ask for high level accounting of money spent (so much for rent,so much for RCA, Q-Bar, Bed, boy toy and etc.). IMHO, there is nothing wrong with budgeting ... most of us do it at some level. Most of my married friends are given budgets by their wives (back in US) and have to account for their spending!!!

  4. If you are looking at 30 sq. meter *studio* rooms, then there are other things to consider. Most places come with fairly small refrigerator so it's hard to store much in there. Also there are hardly much covered spaces to store dry goods and spices. And if you do, you are just inviting all kind of insects (ants, roaches) to come and hang out.

I live in such place. If there is any cooking done, it's done on a small balcony which serves as kitchen (cooking and washing dishes) and laundry room (occasional washing and hanging). Currently we are using electric burner but in the past, I've used one of those single gas burner where you buy the gas in the can. Many places will not let you have one of those propane tank based burners due to fire risk.

Purely from financial perspective, I don't think there is much saving from cooking at home vs. eating same food outside but there's more to a life than money (for some people).

  5. I come to BKK every two weeks for a long weekend. Of course, the worst part of these weekend trips is the immigration line. I love the express train to Phaya Thai.

Last two trips have seen drastic improvements. Almost two weeks ago, it was less than15 min to arrive and to depart with snake lines in both arrival and departure. I do like the snake line and it helps to even out the queue (and if there are any hotties in front of me, I get to gawk/stalk her for longer period - stunning luk kreung and Chinese or Singapore gal in short-shorts in the departure line last time which helps to pass the time in more pleasant manner).

I hope it will stay like this as I'm coming in again this Thursday.
