Machines can only dispense 20 bills in one go.if you need 40k, you need to do two transactions

Wrong.. As stated above certain banks allow 30.

Cash machines can dispense 25,000 baht at a time if your card allows this. (25x 1000THB). I have never heard or been given an option to withdraw more. The reason why most cards cannot withdraw more is because 25,000THB is approximately £500 which is the highest amount UK cards can withdraw at anyone time, usually per day.  I have never come across a cash card that allows you withdraw more than £500 per day from a machine. They cap the amount in case your card is compromised and the the pin number is known.

Ask yourself, what have you ever heard of anyone taking out £1000 from a cash machine or 50,000THB from a machine, because I haven't and anyone who has must have an offshore card.

Considering thailand is half way around the planet to the UK I'd think it would be fair to say that UK bank cards amount to a small fraction of Thai ATM usage. Thai ATM cards can be set to allow 100's of thousands of baht per day.

  2. Closed rail lines, closed airport runway, one of worlds highest fatality rates on the roads. It looks like Thai transport infrastructure needs very serious attention and fast, after all this is the backbone of a functioning economy. I hope it is not all blamed on bad spirits, I hope the authorities get real and spend the money to fix what so clearly needs fixing.

A lot of roads in BKK would be more quickly passed during rush hours if pedestrianised. And it's only set to get worse. Certain areas could already be mistaken to be inside a 'rush hour' 16hrs a day.....

  3. From reading the instructions of the form that has to be submitted, you have to have over $10,000 of aggregate assets for reporting on the form.  Reading the form, it only says to report the assets.  Nothing about paying taxes.  I think this is the same as reporting amounts over $10,000 when you leave the US.

I asked a customs agent in Dallas, TX when I was getting ready to leave for Thailand why we had to report the money.  Mainly, if you report it and your name somehow comes up in an investigation, they will not pursue you if you reported as per US law.  If you don't report it, you might have some problems.

If you made money legally, I think you have nothing to worry about but they are looking for the tax payers who are making money illegally or trying to hide the money offshore to avoid paying taxes.

I may be wrong but a lot of people are getting excited for nothing.  I just read the instructions for the form 8957, the summary of FATCA Reporting for U.S. Taxpayers, and TD F 90-22.1 form, Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts where it has most of the information for us as US taxpayers.  They can be downloaded from the IRS web page.

I may be wrong but a lot of people are getting excited for nothing.

you are not addressing but missing the actual problem. primarily it's not a matter of U.S. citizens/persons hiding assets or evading taxes but the additional workload and cost on banks as far as reporting each and every transactions as well as the results of these transactions to the IRS. most banks are not willing to comply with that rigmarole and refuse U.S. clients. as simple as that!

At least thats what they were planning on doing until the US started threatening sanctions against those banks which didn't comply.

As mentioned previously, almost all banks would find it very hard to completely do away with the US $ , so they are pretty much forced to comply.

  4. You've given up on thais being the same size as foreigners?

Judo and Akido are self defence no? I thought this thread was about people attacking rather than defending and wrestling.

If thai guys in general are these solid 60kg muay thai boxers who could drop any average joe 90kg foreigner why do they only ever attack like a pack of dogs? I'll hazard a guess and say, because they ain't trained fighters and know full well they would get their faces smashed in if they didn't?

  5. After some not so intensive research I also decided to buy the Pittasoft Blackvue DR500GW-HD dash cam.  I called Monzy Shop in Bangkok and went to pick it up.  I then had it installed (hard wired with a power adapter) in my BMW at SFX Auto on Rama 4.  It's one of the more expensive dash cams on the market but well worth the money for the quality you get.

Did you get a low battery cut off switch put in too? How much did SFX charge?

  6. PayPal are a bunch of money grabbing dimwits. They will limit accounts for next to nothing and only try to protect themselves.

A friend of mine used to work at the fraud department of a major online gambling website in Gibraltar. If someones paypal account went into a negative balance for whatever reason (ebay chargeback, whatever) and they had also used said Paypal account to deposit to the gambling website Paypal would actually call them up requesting that the persons gambling account was locked along with whatever funds were in it being refunded to them, 99% of the time they refused as fraud was nothing to do with it and it was just paypal clutching at straws trying to cover their own asses.

Online gambling website based in Gibralter complaining about PayPal, now that's funny.

A lot of the big European ones are....

The only problem is that is that the criminal thais in these areas often have knives or even guns and that makes it difficult for other foreigners to come to help and give these little <deleted> a real beating, because we all know that in a fair or even numbered fight that the thais would get their <deleted> royally kicked by a group of whites.

And the overzealous moderators will probably delete this post as well.

I think this is just your opinion. Ask a thai and he would probably say the thais would win cos they are tougher even if they are smaller. Pointless making up imaginary scenerios.

Ok, so you're one of those people who think Manny Paquio could beat an average heavyweight?

Because, if so, you are really way off. Weight matters - A LOT.

50-60 kg is never going to beat 80-90 kg unless there is a huge difference in agression and skill. Which I doubt. No one goes down from a single punch from a Thai, hence why they always use weapons or gang up. On the other hand, a good straight right from someone 90 kg will be a knockout a significant portion of the time.

well that is if you assume that all thais only weigh 50-60 kg and all farang are 90kg and above and the comparison of manny with a heavyweight in regards to an average thai and farang is way off. Cos manny and the heavy weight are all trained boxers and their body weight is mostly composed of muscle. Lord even knows if the farang's 90kg is actually purely muscle or fat you do know that being 90kg and obese doesn't actually make you a tougher fighter. Anyway there are many smaller sized fighters that easily took down bigger ppl and most ppl don't actually know how to throw a punch without breaking their own wrist.

Still find it funny you could stereotype thais as small sized 50-60 kg and all farangs as some type of muscled beasts 90kg and above. Mind you many muay thai fighters are rather small because they lack any bodyfat but they could probably even kill ppl bigger than themselves.

Did you skip physics class? Force is mass and momentum, it doesn't matter if that mass is muscle, fat or a wristwatch.

90kg is a pretty average weight for a 6ft well bulit foreigner.

You are seriously going to try arguing the toss that Thai's and foreigners are in general the same size?

  9.

Work permit for food cart ? Do you know what you are talking about ?

You obviously don't, any work needs a work permit if you are not a Thai.

Yes I exactly know that someone who expects a work permit for this is plain stupid.

How would he get a work permit without a company. If he has a company, what's to stop him getting a work permit that includes 'field sales research'?

The police don't give a damn... they've never even asked to see a work permit or his passport and regularly stop traffic to let him across the road so he says....

  10. I really get tired of people always defending this type of cowardly, brutal, animal behavior with the "happens in Sydney" or wher the fuc_k ever. We are not talking about Sydney or Glascow or Detroit or wherever but rather a tourist desination in Thailand.  Bottom line is it is happening here and if you are half awake you will see it is wrong and you may be next one drunken evening.

No-one is defending it - if only these type of attacks were restricted to Thailand. We could rename it 'the Land of Thugs' and tourist numbers would go from 22 million to ~2000 Indians and Nigerians overnight.

How many family groups would you say risk this type of violence in Thailand. My *guess* is that its a tiny number - in bed by 11pm, mostly - and that leaves Farang punters, the odd younger couple and Thais who gravitate to the nightlife industry. Do the math.

As others have pointed out, the guy in that vid is clearly drunk - ever been pushed or abused by a drunk ? I got into it with one such drunk a few years back on Koh Chang, and we were both saved by the Thais who broke it up - bad for business, particularly if one Farang stabs the other and/or both go to jail/the hospital (or worse..). This was one-on-one, although his mate clearly wanted a piece of me when they returned later and were told to piss off by the Thai staff. Said staff could have kicked me out, or simply given me the cold shoulder, but they didn't - I was a customer spending money in their bar and the other guy had abused them - simple. To date, he remains the only drunk to get in my face like that in Thailand, but it would be different if I had to work in a bar night after night.

Good and bad Thai people, same as anywhere - I was lucky to find myself surrounded by more of the former than the latter. In Sydney, I believe it would have been entirely different.

So your wealth of knowledge on the subject comes from one incident in koh chang a few years back while you were holidaying in Thailand for a few weeks?

Perhaps you should write a book on the subject to let expats (some of which have been living in Thailand for decades) know how it really is?

  11.

I've never seen groups of Thai's set on a farang without cause.

There is never a cause when it's about six to one. If Thais have any cause to beat up a Farang, Why do they always need back up? Are they not brave enough to fight the Farang one to one? I would like an answer to this.

I don't think cowardice or bravery are anywhere in the equation.

Not being an apologist for Thais or their behaviour in such situations but I seriously believe the cause of these "pack attacks" in most cases is simply taking an opportunity to get a modicum of revenge on Farang in general - at least the type of Farang these people meet regularly on a day-to-day basis.

In the vast majority of cases the Thais doing the beating are low-paid, low class workers in the Bar area - waiters, bar-boys, pimps etc..

Every day they see well off (to them) Farang lording it around their place of work - spending more money just on alcohol in one night than they earn in a week, a thousand Baht on one meal, a couple of thousand Baht to take home a girl. All this must build up terrible resentment and jealousy for which they have no immediate outlet.

Then one day some obnoxious Farang goes a little too far and causes a scene, starts a fight, and they seize upon this golden opportunity to vent their built up frustrations and jump in.

Resentment and jealousy is human nature - not at all unique to Thais or Thailand.

    Patrick

True enough... This is also the way they fight amongst themselves though.

On a trip to sukhothai at songkran a few years ago in a single afternoon I saw 3x such beatings. One without weapons, one using chains and another with a big machete.

They fight like wild animals. The trouble starts, its obvious which gang is bigger, the weaker gang flees and in each case one gets picked off then the entire gang focuses on beating that individual. In 2 of the 3 cases mentioned in the last paragraph I'd be very supprised if 2 of them had survived.

With Thai on Thai fights they fend for their own group/gang. When a farang is involved the gang makeup is Thais vs Farang, and as you said there are quite a few Thai guys who resent us, so they all want to get a shot in.
