  1. I use the Keto Diet App on my phone which has a calculator for many types of foods. For you example of oats for example, it gives you the calories from carbs/protein/fat for dry oats and for various methods of preparation. You can maintain a daily log of what you have eaten so you can track everything.

I expect there are other apps out there that do a similar thing.

Damn, I've already spent the money doing the colour copies, but just 10 baht per color print was ok. If anyone lives in Phuket I can give the location, I thought that was quite cheap.

Quick question to everyone, my appearance hasn't changed much (lucky me) so I'm not going to filling in section 10 of the application form around a counter-signatory. Do I still need someone to sign the back of 1 of the passport photos, even if I'm leaving section 10 blank?

Or is it ok to send the 2 photos blank, as I look the same?

You don't need to have the photos signed, leave them blank.

I'm sorry, but I'm not watching videos. I understand there are countless opinions all over the internet about the benefits of fasting, but it's all opinion and very subjective. Most people are suggesting "why not fast", rather than giving some scientific reasons why one should. And even if you can provide some scientific evidence to suggest fasting has some benefits, is 48 hours better than 36 hours or 24 hours or 12 hours (for example). Let's get scientific about this. Have you recent scientific studies to show?

The video you refuse to watch references a number of sources, e.g.: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3106288/

    Also a Harvard study : https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2017/11/intermittent-fasting-may-be-center-of-increasing-lifespan/

BTW one of my regular must haves is Halumi. Because it's chewy& very tasty.

To round it up,- almost with a sweet,

A few scoops or cream cheese giving it an sweet touch by adding just a bit of whole milk.

Anyone with a suggestion for a crispy snack?

    Pork rinds?

  5. Catching close ups of a flower will give you the problem of getting the whole flower in focus (the closer you are to the subject, the thinner the depth of field).
Some mirrorless cameras offer a solution to this with focus stacking. You focus on the nearest point, press the shutter, and the camera then takes a specified number of shots, moving the focus point slightly forward each time. You then merge the images in software.
This photo is 15 merged images such that all the flower is in focus.

  6. I’d go further, why a DSLR?
Mirrorless cameras have a better “liveview” on the rear screen, which makes them easy to compose with when working off a tripod. Micro four thirds cameras (Panasonic/Olympus) have smaller sensors which will give you more depth of field at an equivalent focal length, which is useful if you want to capture the full flower in detail. Or even something like the Sony RX100 would do the job.
If you are after “whole flower” shots, you don’t need a macro.
Suggest a flash is not a good idea, you will create unpleasant shadows, if you are shooting on a tripod then a slow shutter speed is no problem. If you need additional light, then maybe a well diffused lcd panel.

It's all a big mystery to me, to be honest.  I think the answers will be known in the not to distant future.  Until then, I guess the best thing is just to try and be informed through trusted unbiased sources (i.e.: Gregor), and then make your own personal decisions since what might be right for one person, might not be for another.

Just taking an interest in your own health and seeking the truth instead of just accepting the status quo puts a person 99% ahead of most people.

I used to enjoy Gregor's videos and I bought and read How Not To Die; but like all of the people pushing a nutrition agenda, I understand he is selective about what uses from published literature.  As you say, it is a mystery, which is why there are so many different approaches apparently being fully justified as being the answer!

Fact is, on a personal basis I, like you, lean towards a plant-based diet with minimal animal fat.

However, the scientific understanding of how the body works and what effect nutrition has on it has barely scratched the surface and much is simply unknown.  Furthermore, how our bodies work and how nutrition effects them is highly variable based upon the individual.  What works for one person may not work for another for a variety of reasons.

Much of the current scientific research into how diet effect health falls into two camps; one advocating a low fat diet, and the other advocating a low-carb diet. There are compelling, science-based arguments for BOTH schools of thought.

As I pointed out, there are many people who have benefited (in the long term) by adopting a low carb diet, and their success is supported by sound scientific understanding (known and emerging) of how the body works, so it should hardly be discounted, any more than examples that support a low-fat diet.

I simply think it's a mistake to make sweeping conclusions about whether a low-fat diet or a low-carb diet is healthier.  Subjects like this rarely have a simple "black & white" answer.  In the final analysis it will probably be elements of BOTH viewpoints that prove correct.

I'm just saying that I think the smarter choice for now is to objectively explore all valid schools of thought, and then make a personal decision what's best for you, not for everyone, just for you.

I just think it's a big mistake to accept one viewpoint as gospel truth over another until much more is really known.

Wise words. The only universally accepted truths seem to be that processed foods and excessive sugar are bad, and you can't go wrong with a leafy veggie!  Fasting seems to be generally hailed as a good thing too.

I do not entirely agree with a lot of the LCHF camp but if you want to check out valid science-based studies that support LCHF, the leading researchers would probably be Dr. Stephen Phinney and Dr. Jeff Volek.

Most of their present research focuses specifically on the physiology and functional application of low carbohydrate nutrition.  They both have numerous, peer-reviewed studies that have been published and easily found by googling their names.

    Hope this is useful.

    Thanks.

  10. Thanks for the suggestions. All of the names you suggested are of people who advocate low fat diets; so of course they do not reference studies that show short and longer term outcomes for low carb/high fat nutrition.

I am currently getting very good results from an LCHF diet; so guess I will just continue until I am not!

    Thanks again for the feedback.

While I am not a scientist -the study was small, of short duration, used unsaturated fats and most import there was no low fat- high carb diet to compare to as all 3 diets were high in fat.

Also another very key point is that high fat diets can show good short term results but longterm all case mortality increases. This is why Bernard and Ornish and others in their school of thought are to me very clearly correct.

Now if you are focused on short term results the answer could be very different...

Could you point me to the studies that indicate that high fat diets have a poor long term outcome. Interested because I am currently on such a diet! Thanks!
