"Thai economy needs more than a good image"

    What good image?

I think they are referring to the one thy are trying to build,,, at least I hope so,, they seem to have a grasp on the corruption point I hope they are not so disillusioned that they think Thailand has a good image..

They couldn't really think that, could they?,,,giggle.gif

Many of the ruling elite here thinks that Thailand is on top of the world and can do no wrong.

I read a test in a Swedish magazine regarding how many litres of berries the different nationalities averaged picked in one day and the Thais were picking 3 times the amount compared to what the Poles and the other Europeans did! they said that they were used walking all day on the rice fields with bend backs, when you pick fruit whole day you hurt your back after if are tall or not used to it. [/size]

So thats a nice way to circumvent the law so no Insurance claims can be made when said labourers suffer from back injuries,In Europe it is stated how much a manual labourer can carry on his back and courses manual handling are given to employees under pressure of Insurance companys .
I have personally seen employees of macro in Buriram who stack shelves wearing special back supporting belts provided by macro.

I am not sure what their contracts says about work related injuries, but as temporary staff they could left out in the cold if something happens. I know the labour laws in Scandinavia are very good for protecting permant workers regarding things like this.

  4. I vote for taxing all the rich Generals instead (ahh shit forgot that we are not allowed to vote any longer here), wonder how  many of the Thai generals ever been investigated for being "unhealthy wealthy"? (recon it's 0% of them)

Sad thing is that Thailand is not any longer the "Land of Free"  it used to be, it's going down the drain same way as the Western world with silly rules and crazy taxes.

  5. Dear Pol.Col.Thanasak,

Do I really need to carry my passport on me when going to my favorite body massage place in Hua Hin? I am getting really worried here as all that splashing and all that foam could destroy my travel document, yes I know it sound silly but sometimes especially after to many lady drinks the girls can get out of control.

Biggest hassle was the Tax clearance you needed before departure, if you had stayed more than 180 days in one year you had to pay 7% tax on the money you spent in Thailand during your stay! So we all said that we did not spend any money or had rich Thai girlfriends etc. It worked for many year until they changed the boss at the tax office, the new boss was an old fat Thai-Chinese lady and first time I saw her she said: You pay tax 4000 Baht.  Crazy system. We did a Penang trip every 90 days with Thai from Phuket, it was just enough time between landing in Penang and return departure for 2 Tiger beer at the airport bar, compared to the Kloster and Singha Beer that was the only beer available than it was a nice change.

Are you sure this was 30 years ago (or it just seems that way)?  The 7% VAT was only started in 1992.

No, it wasn't the VAT. It was a special tax that only farangs had to pay. Actually I never had to pay it because when I retired from the Army and came back I had a Non-Immigrant 'O' and extended that for support of Thai wife. I didn't have to leave the country until 1996, after she died. If I recall correctly they revoked the tax just in time. Let's see, was that the Chavalit government? Anyway, my biggest regret is that I didn't get Thai citizenship then, when it was still affordable. Now I'm not even eligible to apply, because I've never worked in Thailand.

From what I remember, that tax was assessed according to the nationality one had,
not how much one earned or spend in Thailand. Well, at least late 70' and early 80'

I remembered that I paid 7% on what they told me that I had spent! Also remember that hippies were looked down on and males with long hair and wearing shorts could face problems when visiting the immigration office in Phuket town. Still it was much better those days compared to Thailand today, and most of the Thais were not so materialistic and greedy as they have become now.

  7. I read many years ago that the numbers of the Thai commercial fishing fleet was 44.000 vessels, now they said it's only 10.000 boats! If you fly in from Singapore to Bangkok nighttime during the squid period of the month it looks like a big city down there from the lights from the Squid boats, only this fleet must be more than 10.000 vessels. The size of the Andaman sea fleet is also huge and the Thai boats fishing all over Indonesia and in Burma must be in the thousands as well. I don't trust their numbers.

This was not the VAT tax it was a tax on money you had spent in Thailand if you stayed over 180 days in one year. As mention below it was a Russian roulette. I think they stopped it in 1989 -90 and we were all very happy for that.

The Muslims claim the 3 border provinces as as theirs, "The Sultanate of Patani", but long time before they showed up in this area it was the Buddhist Srivijayan Empire (8th to 12th centuries) The Thai government should never listen to this narrow minded group of people, if they can't live in peace with others they should be expelled from Thailand.

Thailand legally has ownership of the deep South provinces acquired by way of the 1909 treaty with Britain. As for expulsion I guess you're referring to the 10k to 20 k members of the militant groups as the Thai Muslim population in the deep South is around 1.4 million. Even so, besides being able to identify the miltant membership, which country would accept them 'cause near neighbours such as Malaysia or Indonesia wouldn't.

I don't think even the brightest minds in this country knows what to do with these militants or how to identify them. Maybe the same approach as during the Malayan Emergency against the communists would work (The Briggs Plan)?

  12. These people must be the world’s greediest fishermen, using forced slave labor, polluting the sea with all kinds of shit and ignoring all fishing laws and regulations and on top of this now they want to sue PTT, a company owned by the people of Thailand. Greenpeace should open their eyes for what is going on here and put these people out of business.
