However, if I was in this scumbag's shoes I would probably have done exactly the same on the advice of my expensive lawyers. The problem lies in the legal system that allows the time lapse, non-appearance in court, excuses, lack of implementation and easy peasy bail without removal of passports etc. etc etc. The police who have repeatedly failed to come up with enough evidence for the prosecutors to act, despite their promise to pursue this scumbag, have also a lot to answer for. And finally, the archaic practice of paying off the victim's family before a trial is one of the worst offences, even though I do realise the family of the victim need to survive. If the court cases were conducted timely, they could wait until compensation was decided by the courts.

As much as i despise the system, if he does decide to stay away and not return, i dont think he will have a happy life. Regardless of what it might look like on the onside, and the opportunities his wealth gives him to lead a comfortable life wherever he chooses, this will stay with him forever, and many people will never be able to look him in the eye again. It does not sound much, but going through life living like that cannot be easy. Plus the fact that he wont be able to come home for 15 years- which might not sound much but he is Thai, and they do love Thailand.

If i was him i would just come home and face the music. It is 99% certain he will get off anyway, and at least if he does that he can sort of hold his head up and say he was found innocent in the court of law.

I renewed my passport last December and the local Immigration Office transferred my extension of stay and reentry permit with no letter and no hassles.

The letter is nonsense and unlike the passports can easily be forged. Immigration has details on current and previous versions of UK passports (including electronically) and thus it should be relatively easy to confirm if the passport is genuine or otherwise.

My guess would be that those missions who supply the "guarantee letter" are doing so to help their nationals even though it is meaningless.

Letter is not Meaningless... It provides a Backup if Passort is later proven Fake, of why it was accepted. Also I can assure you that these letters are Verified to their Origin. Thai have many more forms then we as Farang seem to deem necessary, but like in anything else here it is Thailand, If you want to stay here you must comply... That easy

Also If it cost yoy extra to aquire this Mandated letter. I would submit a Bill Due with copies of your Receipts. Every month they fail to make payment, I would resubmit and add a Past due amount of 3% as a last fee.

If they refuse to pay Sue.. You can get letters from Thai Immigration on the required process and that everyother Visitor from every other Country that is in same circumstance is complying... They get enough of these on their Desk! Heads will fly in HK, doing Half Assed Job... Gets a Honest Citizens Response!!

How do you suggest the Embassy Stamp (which certifies authenticity) is obtained.

Ther are multiple Consular's Offices arround Thailand. Ask them. Or Mr. Larry Cunningham. You may oly be required to let them make copies of Both Passports and have you sign copies so they can Overnight to Embassy with return to your Residence @ their Expense!

I live in the South of Thailand. Asking me to go to BKK for this piece of paper is outrageous even if it is provided at no cost.

The total cost of obtaining this letter would exceed 3000bht flying Air Asia assuming the task could be completed in one day.

I reattached letter, so posts like this would be unfounded...Thank you!

Then take to your Local Consular's Office to be filled in in its entirety! No need to travel to Bangkok! If you persist on going... Buy me a case of Whiskey as I assure you IT won't be waisted!

Plus you should have a receipt that came with the return of Old Passport and your New One! 'Either this or the completed letter is all they are asking for....

(I don't understand the big fuss... for years Brit's have been able to bypass this requirement... No other person here from anyother Country in same circumstance complained. Now that they (Thai Imm.) have found this discrepency and are trying to Unify the whole process... We start getting Complaints....

I am not complaining, or Bitching... I'm just stating the Cold Hard Truth...! If it cost you more money to complete this task, because of their failure to complete theirs (or Lazyness! I might add...) I would attach a "Bill Due" with the amount and copies of your receipts (showing validity of your request) Your Embassy gets enough of these and they will get the picture! Quicker resubmit every month as long as not paid and attach a 3% Late Fee!!!

How about when you send your stuff off to HK you put an attached note asking for an authentication letter that the new passport (number) is a replacement for the old passport (number). Then see what happens.

Better Idea for you Brit's:

There is a supplied copy of the letter, supplied in the first page of this Post. How about making a copy, or two keeping one on file, to help someother Bloke out when the Question arises, and it will. As it is implied that HK who is renewing your Passports is doing a Half Assed Job. THEN.... Taking the other one WITH both Passports to the British Embassy and asking them to complete the proccess where HK failed.

Also Include a letter from CM Immigration requesting this. Or a leter stating this is required and is being provided with New Passport by All Other Embassies here.

Either fits dash in Auto or for use in Motor cycle. The Lucas ID # will give sellers idea of what I am looking for. But it must work on 12VDC! Picture is showing mounted in M/C headlight.

Many people are now warned, many people won't find out about it until too late to strategize, and some are caught with less than 12 months on existing passports and just now find out the new regulation.

Whats the issue? If you have 8 months left They will issue a stay for 8 months... If it takes you 4 weeks to get new passport... Go back with both and they will transfer remaining 7 months (or what ever..) to new Passport free! I see no problem with this. I am a guest here, lest we forget this. Just like when your home, you drive on the side of the road as mandated by your Countries Law.... Is this Horse Shit? Because you drove on the Left side here? No! Laws are laws, we have to obey.

I look at it this way, They could have said "8 months left? I ssue Stay in country 8 months!" you apply for new Passport as time when stipulated by your State Department, then you return to Thai Immigration to have everything transfered before the end of 8 months and they say " Oh.. you get New Passport, you need to get new Long Stay Visa now. Old one Expire with old Passport!" But They didn't!!

I am thankful that I get to use the remaining time. I was told what I was getting when issued the last Long Stay Visa. So it is not that I didn't know up front. They could have been a real Bitch and said "Oh.. your new Passport Issued on 12 December, you apply New Long Stay Visa 14 December... Guess what you over stay as Previous Permit Expired 12 December". You owe 4000 Baht plus fee new Permit total 5900 Baht...

I consider us Lucky... As honest as can be here in trying to put an end Date to the Old Practice, I see them being Extremely Fair!

Domestic has no Customs, only Security Checks with either X-ray of luggage or at times, a Researching of your luggage... As time is a well known time to try to distribute since you are already beyound Customs so good time to plant and opportunity for Bribe! As their arguement uppon finding would be just this. Why would we.. do this...? You know you are past Customs... "So you are guilty!" Now for a gift I can try to make this problem... "Go away..." Understand? I believe you.. I wonder who thought up this Trap, and how to prove it unless you get your Bags Security checked 2nd time before checking them at ticket counter if you suspect issue. Or even just "Everyone! Overload the system. Get luggage searched 2nd time and get sealed with tag to show last person in luggage was.... I think if you overload system someone will get the picture!" Don't forget to take friendly Photo of Officers smiling as they do search!

I did this in BKK and when I got searched in Chiang Mai Memory Card in Camera was reformated... Little did they know original card was in my wallet! x-ray showed card there when I boarded, so they know there was card in camera too. To cheesy to ask to see card contents of one in my back pocket, would have absolutely shown there was something they were trying to hide... So they Balked!

Storage is a major problem on a bike, we use our truck typically twice a week for going big time shopping for the house hold. It would be next to impossible for us to do it on a bike with a son in the house.

When I was young I was on a touring trip with 4 other bikes on my Yamaha SR500 to Southern Europa and I was carrying tent, sleeping bag and clothes(not much, ha-ha) and I didn't have any side bags or tank bag (student then, no money) so all was strapped behind me on the passenger part of the seat. Ahh what a trip it was, I still think about it, I think the best touring trip I ever did in my life.

At least here in Thailand you don't have to carry tent and sleeping bag unless you are the jungle kind of person.

When you see what the Thais can carry on a bike holy cow, 3 passengers, a huge gas bottle and all sorts of stuff and I see the odd expat with his golf club bag getting transported on a bike a well.

Where there is a will there is a way but safe? Hmm
