I always fly 'top 20' to/from Thailand, and although it usually costs a little more, I accept that it is worth it. What the previous poster said is right - the difference between airline safety records has a lot to do with the Pilots. Well trained, experienced and highly qualified Pilots work at the best airlines, and when something goes wrong, that is who I want to be in charge. Look up world's safest airlines and anyone in the top 10-20 would be OK (Qantas is my preferred choice). Many pilots who work for the 'budget' airlines, like Air Asia, do so because they are not capable and/or not qualified to fly for the better airlines. I used to work with an ex-traffic controller - he lasted 10 years - and could tell some stories about certain airlines and their pilots.

I wouldn't use a Doctor who was only trained/qualified in a 3rd world country, and I wont use such a Pilot. It is like going to a rural Hospital in India and hoping for the best, versus the top private Hospital in Sydney/New York, but the difference in costs is nowhere near the same. I see the extra costs as 'flight insurance'.

My son is a pilot with Air Asia (not Air Asia X who fly A330) and he is very capable and qualified (trained is Australia) as are all the Captains he flies with.

  2. I have had "The Shadow" pinball for 20 years and have never had any major problems. I buy my spares from Pinball Heaven in the UK (where I bought the machine from). https://www.pinball.co.uk/

The backlights have stopped working due to a short, but all features etc work fine. Let me know if you find a decent repair man. I would like to get my machine working perfectly.

  3. Drowning is the most common cause of death of Thai children under the age of 15. The usual contributing factors: lack of parental supervision, lack of education, fatalism, lack of self preservation. The girl could not swim and went to a reservoir. I ride my bike past a new reservoir just south of Hua Hin and regularly see kids playing by the side. Only a matter of time I'm afraid.

  4. We had True Fibre 30/10 for a year a so and recently upgraded to 100/300. True came yesterday and brought a new modem as well as a True TV box which works off the router. Apparently, you have to take the True TV package to get the 30/100 upgrade. Anyway, I have disconnected the TV box because the programmes are rubbish and I have an Android box. However, since the upgrade, my torrenting speed has decreased from 1-3Mbps to about 200kbps. Anyone know why? Is it because some of the bandwidth is reserved for the the TV service? As usual, I regretted getting in True...my 30/10 service was fine and now the 100/300 speed is 90% slower and I don't even use the TV box.

  5. I have PR and I think one of the requirements when you get PR is to get put on a blue tabien baan. So I think all PR holders are on a blue tabien baan. The ID number on my pink ID card starts with an "8", which is "for foreigners who legally come to Thailand and are allowed to stay permanently and foreigners who get Thai Nationality" Since yours starts with a "3", it appears you are classed as " Thai (allow foreigners too) who have name in tabien baan born before 31 May 2527  (1984)"

It will never happen, as the so called 'Elite' do not want an educated population.   Keep the men dumb and the women barefoot and pregnant is the way forward for the foreseeable future.

Agreed. Been here 26 years. Keep the population docile, subservient, ignorant and frightened and you can get away with anything.

  7. My son is a pilot and is based at Phuket this week. He said the weather has been bad for 2-3 days but nothing that is troubling

The ILS system in Phuket is a little finicky and if it isn't deactivated at the appropriate time before landing leads you off the side of the runway. That’s why Emirates and Qatar, who are unfamiliar with the airport, always ask for a GPS approach.

Interesting news about expats getting a so-called ID by using a yellow certificate of residence. Anyone know about IDs for permanent residents who have the proper blue tambien baan? I guess it would be a different colour ID.

I have PR, my name in the blue tabien baan and a pink ID card with a 13 digit ID number beginning with "8" (denoting that I'm an alien!). I use the card all the time for checking into hotels, getting the Thai price for tourist attractions etc.

  9. I have had a pink ID card since 2012, issued by Pakkret tessabaan, I didn't know I was allowed one...went to get my name put on the tabien baan after getting PR. They took my picture and said come back in a month for your pink ID card!
