  1. I'm vaguely aware of a Law that gives a tenant the right to occupy if they have been living on land without a tenancy agreement for a lengthy period of time. But this would almost certainly only apply to Thais. In short, and speaking as a professional, you have no right to remain and your former Landlord had no obligation to tell you about the sale. The new landlord has no obligation to keep you and if they do this will be a new arrangement completely separate to the last. My advice..... Either do a deal you are happy with on the current house or move. In either case get a contract. There's no Housing Act or ASTs in Thailand!

  2. Why not just a standard MiFi? Huawei E5332 being one example.

Better to have the option of mains or portability. Bank on 1500 to 2000 baht for an unlocked model. Cheaper version may be locked to a particular network.

    Recent experience here

If it can be charged from the mains supply as opposed to USB it looks perfect. Any idea if anyone sells a similar device in Thailand? That thread seems to intimate that True do a similar device, and I will head down there to check because that is a strong network in the area I have in mind.

    Thanks also!

  3. Thanks RichCor this is really helpful. The problem with search engines is finding the best way to word the query. Also using your search parameter it opened up another term which seems obvious now but has also returned many possibilities, and that is " mobile hotspot"

Thanks for taking the time to look at this for me.

  4. I have been recommended a device by a Client, but he cannot recall from whence he heard about it and everyone I have spoken to about it just shrugs their shoulders, smiles and says the ever popular " mai mee" or second most popular " mai roo". It seems that I am also one of these merry men and women, but I am keen to find out.

Now assuming it's not something my chappy dreamed about once and is now convinced it is a real device this is a basic description. It's a small item, slightly larger than a plug, takes a SIM card, and has plug prongs pertruding. The idea is that once plugged to a standard electrical outlet this device accesses a cellular network and broadcasts a small wi fi hotspot that all wi fi devices with the correct code can access. The only button on it is a reset as the handshaking and other duties are done automatically.

If there is such an idiot proof item I would love to know.

Is there such a thing ?

    Regards

  5. The term push bike IS correct , i lived 20 miles from where the first push bike was invented....Scotland.

Yes you pushed them with your feet like a brisk walk on the ground......pedals came later...

I think it's quite an old fashioned term but definitely correct as in the world famous " Pushbike Song" by Australian band The Mixtures and released in 1970. I'm pretty sure The Wurzels did a cover too.

  6. I don't know how many genuine medical experts this forum boasts, but wouldn't it be more sensible to ask a doctor?

My medical expertise has all been gained from Holby City Hospital *, so only really emergency medicine and cardio vascular stuff, but having had a few ops recently in Phuket the first thing that enters my mind when seeking medical help is the cost. I have cover, even though I have a £500 excess, but for someone without insurance it must be something considered before going to hospital. Just had a cataract done and with all the check ups am up to about 160,000.

    SDM

    * To any non Brits, Holby technically speaking isn't really a hospital.

  7. Are you fast on the bike?

You need to ride really fast past the mutts. :)

I agree, put the power done and they will move.

When I take my two out for a walk the local mutts come out growling. But when we turn around and walk straight for them, or sometimes run at them if I'm in the mood, they soon scatter yelping. All mouth no trousers.

If they are just street dogs (or any dogs ) it's important not to show fear. After a while they will get bored and leave you alone.

  8. The same thing surely?

    Turn left- leo * sy

Turn right - leo * kwar

If you add "tee fai daeng" to the end of the above it adds "at the traffic lights"

    Bonus

    Drong bpai - straight on

Drong nee go die - can stop here

    Wong-wee-an = Roundabout

Also a tiny bit of advice unless you are using something with a meter, and the meter is on (!!), always confirm the price to your destination before getting in.

    * same as the beer, it's not 100 % perfect pronunciation , but will work

  9. Lots of executive chefs in hotel are foreigners. Local Rimping(Chiang Mai)used to have a foreign chef.

The real answer here is: If you are willing to spend the big bucks, hire a lawyer and grease the right palms you can get a work permit as a Chef. However you will only, by the terms of your work permit, be allowed to supervise and train kitchen staff. Not hardly worth the effort for a small operation. The fine is the same for not having a work permit as working outside the terms of your work permit. Fine will cost you B30,000 +.

If he's serious about setting up he should get a lawyer to have it all "done" properly. Mine wanted 90 for the company and two permits, all in. From memory the work permits were 18 each. (real price 3100 each, but lawyers cost plus tea took it up)

  10. If you are married to a Thai and get your work permit on the basis of that there's all sort of things you can offset. It's not really the pay the authorities are interested in, it's how much tax you must pay. For example I have a Thai wife and half Thai child, with this current wife, in full time education. So as a Brit I can get the required 50K down at least 10 and save heaps on tax.

Not really a help I know if you're not married to a native.

  11. Hi I'm not offended in the slightest but it seems that there are those who take every opportunity to have a pop at another member. As one of the few, if not only, member to publish genuine contact details (in the vain hope that I'll get some business out of you buggers) I try to pick my words carefully. It might make the forum a nicer environment if all the key board warriors had to give real details. More likely everyone would leave rather than tell the others who and where they really were!

Personally if someone bugs me, and their are many, I just put them on my "banned" list under the heading that life is too short.

Also to my way of thinking more post only equates to people with too much time on their hands and nothing to fill it! I also believe that the experience of people who live here permanently have more to offer in experience than those that just holiday here for a few weeks now and again. We should have a flag by each poster "Resident" in gold.

  12. Sounds like a corrupted file on Windows. If it was a disk failure you wouldn't get that far. Is your anti virus up to date?

Complete failure would normally means a disk that has stopped turning, maybe it's been dropped while running and has shattered, or the motor has just failed. Put the machine to your ear and you should be able to hear it whirring separate from the cooling fan.

Sounds like a shop would be the best bet but I'm guessing once the OS has been sorted out it will work fine.

You should be able to format what we used to call a boot disk on a USB and start the system for that, but admittedly it's years since I worked at this level with computers and still hate them, so I might be out of date. Can you start in Safe mood *

    S

. * Intentional spelling error as sometimes it's a more accurate term

  13. Yes, quite right I can see this on another list from a different source.

" Labor work except labor work in fishing boats"

But I can tell you from experience that it have several clients working as Chefs with work permits in their own and other peoples restaurants and hotels. They do have Thais also working in the Kitchen as Junior Chefs so are no doubt Supervising Chefs as you describe.

  15. ..................

The contract was good enough for him to suck a salary out of the country while he chose, and now he wants to do a runner. He accepted the conditions so that he could work in Thailand,

    ...... .

Presumably he provided a service for the income he received, so we can't begrudge him his past salary.

As far as doing a runner this is extremely common the other way around. Many of my clients tell me that without notice some of their Thai staff will simply not come to work. They will either never come back, come back at the end of the month expecting to be paid for the portion of the month they worked, or come back a few days later with a smile and just carry on as normal expecting their absence never to be mentioned.

Good luck OP and don't give it a second thought. They would probably screw you over in a second if it suited them.
