  1. Average wage in Australia? Average wage in Thailand?

Do all the Thais walk around in rags and live in the jungle?

It should be obvious if one has even half a brain.

Thailand is cheaper by the same percent the minimum wage is cheaper.

I obviously forgot to put my half a brain in this morning . . . what the hell are you talking about?

He's one of those guys who married a woman who did not speak english at all.. and now hes trying to convince you(to project it on himself) that thailand is actually cheap.

Rubbish! I live very well, own a 5 mil baht house, drive an Isuzu pickup and spend around 15,000 baht a month on food, electric and water. It would cost me less than half to live here than it does in Australia.

    How?

All your expenses in australia would be from mortgage and car loan

So add those to your thai lifestyle and a 5mil baht house would bring your monthly payment to 35k

    add 10-15k for the car

    etc etc

You're not comparing the same lifestyle.

  3. Lucky I have a shipment of baked beans and wine arriving from Australia today then!!

Baked beans cant be so much cheaper that it warrants a shipment from australia?...you must really love those baked beans!

Shane Warne loved his baked beans so much, he shipped a shed load to India during a cricket tour years ago. I feel sorry for his team mates' noses.

I buy Ayam brand baked beans in tomato sauce. I can't tell the difference from Heinz and they are less than 40 baht a tin. Why would you import?

Some people cant tell the difference from a singha and a real western beer

Some people cant tell the different from a wine of 300baht and one of 600-5k

    Doesnt mean its not there.

  4. The only ones that dont get in debt and run away seem to be the governement workers as they pretty much get unlimited loans. Seen so many runners. I mean lol 17000 salary up there for a 3.2mb house? That's the price of my house and right now with 0% interest its 20 000 per month in mortgage

  5. "You chose a city in Canada where everything is more expensive than the rest of the country and then you compare this to holes in the wall in Thailand. Really? You make no sense sexpat"

Is it really necessary to insult people? You use the term sexpat like it would bother anyone here? And the term "retarded" is just wrong and immature. Neither of these makes your argument more convincing.

    Cheers

  6. Got stopped in the car doing 140 km/h. and the police man said: Mister you can't go so fast, 110 is okay but not 140. Hmm okay I said; will 200 bath make you happy? Yes 200 bath is fine he said and we forget all about it!

And on my way I went after 200 bath was paid, doing 140 km/hbiggrin.png.

Try that in Denmark and you are fuc_ked.

Way cheaper than any Westerner country I would say.

That's one reason why I like Thailand so much, the rules are not so strict.

So you moved to Thailand to avoid all the idiot's taxes? Just say it straight.

  7. Lol.. Vancouver canada $50 for taxi home(take the bus 3$), $10 20 smokes(So what? Its the govt charging you for all the $ you're gonna cost taxpayer by killing yourself and others with your stupid cigs), $1200 crap 1 bedroom with crackheads out your door(Live 20mins from downtown and boom, 1.2k gets you a large 3br, same as in bangkok. 1.2k in bangkok gets you an appt next to hookers and shit and cockroach infested street filled with soi dogs and touts), $120 riding bike no helmit fine(Again that's a tax for idiots who cant protect themselves because of their stupid haircut. You fall and it cost taxpayers 100k to fix your littlehead so nobody cares about the idiot tax except idiots), $120 ferry with car and back to vic(It cost almost that to take a 1hour plane ride in thailand on a lowcost third world airline), $20 for low end meal(Same in thailand. Theres a lot of lowend meals for 600baht and also for 150baht. You can find the same in vancouver you'Re just being ignorant right now even a steamed hotdog with salad 1$. One of my favorite thai-viet place in canada has a business lunch menu everyday for 250b. 3 course high quality. Even in the business center of my city there's a very popular asian restaurant on a very expensive street where you can get rice meals for 120b with actual meat in them and quality ingredients), $12 six pack of beer(no a 6pack is 6$ even at a gas station. In thailand for a decent beer of Molson standard its 20$ for a 6pack), $15 cover charge for low end dance club(Same in thailand you have covers on some bad bars and none on some good ones. Price vary. but in Vancouver if theres a fire you will not die.), $300 weekend pass for music fest(You want a bottle of milk with that whine? There's no music festival worth going to in Thailand. AT ALL. No good artists ever come here. They have a semi-popular jazz festival in huahin but people get killed each year... fantastic culture or lack of).. Goes on and on, everage cell bill is now $80 a month for not being able to watch youtubes or add more.(No 4g in thailand and no ability to get a phone on contract. Unrealiable networks) Greyhound bus $5hrs, $80.(Dunno what price you're trying to push through but at least in Canadian bus you dont have a chance out of 10th to be involved in a major accident). Crack hotel in BC $80(Do some research, easy to find cheap and nice looking bed and breakfasts or guesthouses in canada that are of similar quality to most hotels. High class hotels are a bit cheaper in thailand though), ok hotel $160..

things cheaper, computers, cars gmo crops, junk food, suntain loation,

I work hard, I can't afford taxi, eating out, clothes, cell bill..

Lol maybe the states is afforable in some areas, but been to SF latley.

In thailand I can take a cab and eat out, take a train.. All that is about one tenth the price.

An other genius comparing an expensive high quality city with a cheap third world city.

Please use a small town 30mins away from Vancouver or compare Vancouver with Thonglor or other expensive parts of Bangkok. Even compare it with Phuket then Vancouver is FAR cheaper. FACTS.

Almost any small town in BC is as much to live in or much more than Vancouver, houses are a half a mill for crappy place in courtney, happen to want to live in a nice coastal town, or mountain town like NElson BC, lol.. $30 will hardly get you a few veggies and some soap at a good store, otherwise, try walmart crap, canned seafood from China.

And by the way, Vancouver is BORING, a hot dog on the street is now $7, not a single pub left in the city besides the yuppie ones, there is thousands and thousands of crack heads out all over, gang warfare, rain 7 months of year, traffic ? Many people make $10.25 an hour in Vancouver at the min wage, many... homeless in every corner.. no community, riots after hockey games.

Ok, I live in one of the cheapest small towns in BC for rent.

    1L of petrol $1.35

1 L of mild at the local corner store $3

Rent (this is the cheapest small town on th coast) $800 for small dump $1500 for a house.

All food at least 20% more than Vancouver, the cheapest food in BC is in Vancouver

It is very expensive to live in a small town in BC, really a simple piece of land with a view and house, GOOD LUCK, it is all owed by overseas investors from China, Japan, USA... no working person can afford Van, or the small towns.

Just saying, Thailand is about 1/10th the price for most daily living things as I have calculated. It is just silly for anyone to compare them, sure if you are buying swiss cheeze in Thailand, or looking for Pizza Hut, well that just makes you a sucker as it is the lowest quality of junk food, who cares. Go eat mango and have some nice healthy chicken rice and soup.

The Thail resterant in my town has pad-thai - $20 a plate, packed everynight, that means pad thai is 1/16 the price in Thaland than Canada !

1.35$ is about 40baht. That's the price for gas in thailand

1500$ is what it cost for a decent western house in bangkok or phuket

You're probably just bad at finding good places in CAnada. All the Canadians i know can live cheaper than that while not really trying to save money or i might be out of the loop with Vancouver but every other major cities is much much much cheaper than living in most of Thailand's developped areas.

  9. For the guy wondering how poor thais get cellphones and other luxuries: Once you get to know a lot of thais you'll learn that a lot of them know someone close to them who stole money from their whole family on numerous occassion to buy those things. You'll also hear every couple weeks about someone in the area having to run away to a temple because their lender is looking for them, then its their friends who go to temples because the lenders are starting to beat up relatives/friends of non-payer. Then they move back to a small village and wait it out for a few years.

Also pawn shops are making even more money than in the west here. People live above their means.

  10. Thai doctors outside of surgery are not anywhere close to the bottom 10% of doctors from western countries. That's just like thinking a burmese laborer can give good advices to a contractor of 50 years for luxury projects in the west.

Almost every thai doctors i have dealt with had very little knowledge without looking through a bunch of books or FAQ lists. Those that did were spewing nonsense. Only met a few good ones in bangkok but they werent educated in thailand.

better go and see one of them ASAP.... it seems your bilious attack isn't clearing up. coffee1.gif

Sorry, but l must agree with BJ.

Also funny reply. If i were to see a mental health doctor i would have to leave the country as thai doctors are for the most part unable to think things through by themselves. You cant follow guidelines for psychotherapy thats why it does not really exists here and most anxiety/childhood medecine are non-available.

So seing a mental health professional would cost me a fortune here compared to back home, id have to see a farang expat.

  12. Dont forget the schools and hospitals. 800$ per month for an average school no where near as good as any small free school in my city. Shitty hospitals filled with people who cheated on their exams that charge a lot.

Thailand is expensive. Some people have said it already they are here for the lifestyle. Those who keep trying to argue that thailand is still cheaper than most countries are just sexpats trying to cover up subconciously.

    What judgmental, bigoted nonsense.

BTW, how much does it cost to send your kid to a private school in Canada - particularly a Thai one?

    edit - spelling.

It would cost you going to prison as the curriculum from thai schools would be deemed child abuse. You would know that if you had kids.

A regular private school will only set you back 65-100k baht per year in canada. Thats the price per month for most private school in thailand for a 3year old child in pre-school. A full on boarding school in Canada will set you back a little more but it will definately be worth it if you chose to go that route. The governement instead of spending their tax on a new ferarri or condo in phuket use the money to help parents save money on private schooling.

I love all those sexpats calling me names when all it is asked from you is to give an exact item and its price to prove that thailand is cheaper for even quality products.

  13. Since I live in the San Francisco bay area the cost of living is hugely higher than most of the US. I currently spend about 7-8k a month. So wouldn't it be safe to say that I would do fairly well on the 3-4k a month budget? One wife and one kid for international school in Chiang Mai. Or am I being completely unrealistic?

Sent from my iPhone using ThaiVisa app

I think you're being unrealistic, if you expect to maintain the same lifestyle. Check out the cost of the cars you are now driving in LOS. It's shocking. Remember, you can't own land in LOS so that's a dilemma. Build a home or buy one and it's on someone else's land. Sure, homes are expensive in SF, but you can't own real estate at all in LOS.

Private schools you'd want to use aren't cheap. The items your family is used to buying at the grocery store are very much more expensive, or aren't available, or can't be trusted for cleanliness and quality.

Yep, Kalifornicate is very expensive, and SF is among the worst, so you have a bit of advantage in comparing, but not enough. Now, if you had the $7 or 8k US in LOS, maybe you could do it. I say maybe becuase a lot of what you're family is used to simply isn't available and you'd have to import it at great cost.

Let be realistic, my friend owns a place in San Francisco (I rent) it ran him $700,000 (so the mortgage payments are around $3700/mo), the rent on a similar sized place (and quality) in Chiang Mai is 15,000 - 30,000 baht ($500 - $1000). So conservatively you are saving 60% on rent alone.

Now the cost of a car, you don't really need one in Chiang Mai, but even if you had one the costs are going to be about the same. You'll pay more in the initial purchase but there is less deprecation and maintenance is cheaper.

Next we have food, it's hard to go out and each for less then $8/pp in the Bay Area, realistically it's a lot more then that. So obviously eating out is cheaper in Chiang Mai. But how about the super market and cooking at home? I'm fairly frugal and it costs me $50/wk in groceries (but I also eat out every day for lunch). Now the costs scale with a family, so lets say $100/wk (most families I know are actually double to triple that). So again you are saving money in Thailand but how much depends entirely on the how much western food you want.

Finally we have the school expenses, this is the one case where Chiang Mai is more expensive then the bay area (assuming you are sending your kids to public school). The top international schools run from 250,000 - 500,000 baht a year, that comes out to ~20,000 - 42,000 a month. In the end this is what determines if it's cheaper in Thailand for a family with children.

Obviously given the budget he is suggesting $3000 - $4000/mo it will be extremely tight with tuition that high, but it will still be possible to have a comfortable lifestyle (just no savings). However with the $8000/mo they are living on at home they would be living very well.

But please, don't let facts ruin a good rant smile.png

Now change all of this and compare the bay area with living in the most expensive parts of bangkok and you got an accurate portrayal of the difference as chiang mai is the cheapest and smallest of the big cities in thailand.

Just a good school for 1 kid will run you 60-100k baht per month. A similar type of accomodation around 80-130k and the restaurants are gonna be around the same price.
