  1. Considering the high usage of palm oil I would say no & I think it's pretty easy to avoid fast food crap and eat healthy in Thailand. Given the abundance of fresh veg & fruit I'm not overly concerned, besides my home made burgers could put Mcdo's out of business smile.png .

Personally I'm more concerned about food in the west containing high fructose corn syrup & genetic modified corn products, I recently read an article about Mcdo's - in the US the cattle are fed corn, pop is full of high fructose corn syrup, chips are fried in corn oil & the buns are made with corn starch.

I think it is extremely difficult to eat healthy in Bangkok. vegetables and fruits are usually full with pesticides. Organic food is almost not available. Everyone uses palm oil to fry things and changes oil way too late.

Not even if for cooking myself I get the healthy things easily and they are more expensive than in Europe.

Our vegetables are soaked in cold water for at least 5 minutes to try and wash off as much chemical as possible. About as much as you can do. I try and avoid restaurant food too often as I doubt that most bother at all. Also, they are too heavy-handed with sauces, MSG, sugar and salt. Thai food healthy? I think not.

Finally something we can agree upon. I also don't think that most Thai food is healthy, there are of course some healthy and semi healthy dishes and it depends on how it is prepared. But to say Thai food is healthy is simply not true.

I cook most of my food myself and i look at what is healthy not how much i like it. Can be boring but staying in shape does take its sacrifices. You can't have it all eating crap and staying slim.

Thaifood being healthy is what sexpats say to justify their stay on other forums than pattaya addicts

As you can see, those small meals that would not fill up a 5 year old are full of dirty calories. I could eat a whole large bag of good quality oven made chips back home and get close to the same intake. Dont forget that a lot of those food(especialy ramen noodles) are stuck in your stomach for 24hrs+ causing a stir

Veggies and fruits dont = to healthy especialy with the ammount of chemicals that are used here.

But then again if you have a western raised girlfriend in thailand who buys everything from Central food hall's selection of organic products that are almost the same price as the crap theys ell on the street and cook with care for taste and quality then thai food becomes very healhty just like any other food from around the world.

Problem is thai restaurants and stalls looking to make big bucks quickly or people being too poor to know or be able to cook healthy

My gf always cooks the traditional way and its very healthy and taste no where alike with what id eat pretty much anywhere else. I suggest you people get traditonal receipes and try them. Way better.

  2. Cosa Nostra at the entrance of Patak Villa 500M west of Chalong CIrcle, behind the first row of shophouses is a little hard to find, but if you like Italian at a reasonable price, it can't be beat. I had a massive Calzone for 240B which I am still trying to finish. I have had meals 3x the price at other Italian restaurants that were not any better. The owner is a very rotund and jovial Italian guy, just the kind of person you would expect to own a good Italian restaurant.

We've got into the habit of dropping into Cosa Nostra occasionally, and I concur with NJ's remarks. The pizzas are very good, the pastas properly al dente, and in short everything has that 'home cooked' flavour. Coupled with a pleasant atmosphere for what is really a small and out of the way place, it seems to have a following of regular resident expats. We were there for a supper this evening, a photo of the spaghetti with seafood that my wife thoroughly enjoyed......

Agree. Great prices and amazing food.

I wish the owner a lot of money and a long lasting business.

  3. i posted it earlier

its where the hair salon was

Always filled with thais every night in the open air seating they built outside the front. Everything you order with seafood is actual seafood that they cut and mix together instead of buying the cheap prepackaged one. I dont remember how this meal is called but my favorite there is the crispy tempura morning glory with thick orange sauce and seafood. You get a full calamari and 3-4 large shrimp and other small stuff and 2 handfull of morning glory. I can eat 2-3 khao pat and this salad makes me full for a good 2-3hrs easily. 70baht. Actual chef cooking it.

But back on topic. If i were to take jamie's blogs about all the festivals we have around here and holidays and remove the text and show an expat the pictures of a few events, they would NEVER be able to tell which event it was. Most thais it would be the same. Rememember phuket's day? The massive parade near Queen's park. What was it? Cheap food and 1hour of wannabe old hisos walking down the street with signs and 10 class of kids dressed up in traditional clothing rest was a bunch of kids wearing their school clothes holding up a crappy banners. Rather stay home and watch some dumb tv like jersey shore or honey booboo

  4. I have it on reliable authority (the wife) that every festival that takes place at Saphan Hin, it's the same stallholders offering the same food. Having been to a couple of them, I can confirm that it's not very good (the food that is).

The Vegetarian Festival is a different ball game, and you should try and get food from the stalls that will be erected near to the various Chinese Temples that will be participating.

99% of them will taste worse than the year long vegetarian restaurants. It's all fried food anyways and its always the cheapest and oldest cut from supercheap. Thais from the big cities are money grabbing demons and they definitely have no love for their own culture. There is 0 culture in phuket and going to those festivals is just supporting the destruction of their heritage.

In 4 years in phuket i have found only one small shophouse restaurant that actually makes thai food as good as in the West/expensive restaurant.(fresh ingrediant and real chef, not just some burnt khao pat and gutter drenched kapow) They also charge the same price as those who make you want to vomit for the basic meals while giving 2x more meat/veggies and the same rice portion. Makes me sad for this race

  5. does it matter? It's always the same food stall repeated five hundred times with bad quality ingredients. Then its the same broken down kids game and the same crap from china they sell at every other market. There will be 5mins of the same old kid's dancing class and then some old wannabe hiso will shout in the microphone for a few hours about his new car, his new pants and his new watch.

The "reason" for the "festival" isnt very important.

  6. Just make sure the meat you buy is sealed. The best quality meat is the ones that was sealed at production or out of the country and never opened/resealed. Buy a whole Striploin/ribeye/tenderloin and cut it yourself. Vacuum seal it back yourself with a small machine(quite cheap)

Or i believe Don's food is a forum sponsor, you can google him hes up in chiang mai making high quality american meat at good prices. He can ship anywhere.

  7. I have never heard of this. I brought ladies back a while ago and never had to pay even in a good hotel on sukhumvit bangkok

I have booked hotels with only my name and then brought my gf and our kid, they said you should of told us but never had a surcharge.

I know a lot of people in the west who've booked hotels for 1 person and brought people at no surcharge (that goes for motels too)

I know dozens of young people in thailand who've booked hotels for themselves everywhere in the country and never had to pay a surcharge.

So imo they only dislike you or its because you are old and i have no sample size for that

  8. A lesson for all reading here. Switch OFF the main breaker before doing ANY electrical stuff here, no matter how small or big the appliance.

    RIP brother. Trans

Yeah seriously, the idiots at homepro were suposed to fix something on my fan i bought there, when i got it back 6months later it was worse than when i sent it. My gf touched it and she was stuck on it for 6-7secs getting electrocuted, almost died. Then it happened to me twice luckily i was sitting on my chair and fell off both time. Everything they touch that works with electricity becomes deadly

  9. some people are quite clearly retarded. OP isnt a big spender

    Withdraw 20mil baht

10mil baht buys you 1 small condo in the city + 1 small beach house or you can get a massive ranch in the middle of nowhere for those days you need to get away + a decent car

Then spend 5-10mil baht on a bunch of cheap thai accomodations(building them is better), install washing machines, internet computers and your own minimart in front of it.

After that you have 10mil left that you keep invested and you can easily make 100k per month with 10mil baht worth of small thai rooms. Every washing machine will net you about 2-3k per month by itself add to that wifi fees/overcharging electricity by a little bit and those millions of ramen noodles per month from the minimart. Easy money.

I know someone who does that and with only 2 locations he gets about 40-50k.

Too many old idiots who failed here. I had exactly one business here and it cosst me 120k to open and after 2months i was in profit and it netted me 100k per month for barely any work. All you need is someone with half a brain to run it. I sold it to inlaws and now they barely make 40-50k hehe.

Know a few other people who invested very little for big profits here but they were all very inteligent people. All the dumb idiots who taught they could outsmart thais failed though. Seen a lot of them and it was obvious that they'd fail.

  10. same here which is why i came here

unblocked doesnt work. For some reason i cant even access my Free vpn that i use. I can access the website but when i connect to their serverrs which are up it just timeout. http://www.freecanadavpn.com/

btw for those using EZTV i suggest you look for ETTV on piratebay. Faster releases and you can chose between 264 and Xvid for every release.

Funny thing is most porn sites are working right now, just need to reload the page 1-2 try and they load. And it wont work with torrent sites? ahh thais.

  11. I don't eat Thai food much. Only when I am up country and there is only Thai food available then I have to eat Thai.

    same

maybe 15% thai food, mostly snacks

Always leaves me empty 1hour after eating, most restaurants are of bad quality especially in phuket where there is no pride, only profit.

I only like high quality thai food with high quality ingredients made by a good chef, my gf or made in the west.

Also im not too keen on the nutritional value of most thai meals compared to what im used to and i think white rice should be outlawed.

Usually like all thai seafood though, hard to mess up or save $ on ingredients and make it cheap. It's mostly fried with a standard seafood sauce smile.png

  12. Got to be the highest priced taxi's in the world.

Thank god I do not have to have anything to do with these scum.

I just pity the poor tourist's having to put up with this total and utter crap.

Now highway robbery has been legitamized in Phuket.

LOL, what countries have you been in? A 25km ride in Norway would cost you probably 8,000 baht. There was a story about a family of 6 people, taking a metered taxi to downtown Oslo in the worst possible time (red-letter-day and nighttime), which set them back about 30,000 Baht.. Talk about expensive..

But mcdonalds pays over 600b an hour in norway when in thailand it pays 30b
