Looks like the tipping controversy is between US tippers and Euro non tippers. Guess thats why waitresses and service personnel always ask me where I am from, and give stellar service ????

OMG they just asking you to either be polite or to make conversation, I know exactly where you hang out, so don't say the "waitress". ????

I tip for food delivery services (20baht normally, 40 baht when raining).

I normally tip for massages (50baht).

I only tip in restaurants when the server does something extra that is unexpected.

I tip when I’m allowed to park in convenient spot that the guard opens for me. (20-40baht).

I also tip for longer taxi rides. I just round up. Going to the airport for example is around 375baht so I give 400.

It’s not going to bankrupt me and I want to make people’s lives better.

Why would you tip for food delivery services? when they already charge you a delivery fee. ????????????

No, I didnt suggest that or anything of the sort , I did ask whether wholesalers can still sell alcohol during that time .

You could previously even buy bulk from 7/11's to get around that law

I quoted the wrong member, by bad

Are wholesalers still exempt from that law ?

Wholesalers used to be able to sell alcohol any time they liked .

Even from 7/11's , you could buy alcohol in bulk at anytime

So truck drivers delivering alcohol must stop on the side of the road between 2 and 5pm because it's the law? ????????????????????

As far as I'm concerned if the clock on the till hasn't clicked over to 2:00pm i.e. 1:59 you are legally entitled to purchase alcohol. I, however, wouldn't cut it that fine. As for the poster I would put a self imposed ban on that particular outlet.????

Like as if here they will even care if a foreigner votes with his feet. They were laughing him out the door.

I have bought alcohol from roadside wholesalers during the so called forbidden hours. Single bottles and boxes. It makes a mockery of this stupid law. Like so many here. But I like it.

That's not even close to being the same thing. Plus the law has nothing to do with Buddhism, if that's what you're thinking, get a clue.

Once i went into 7/11, on a Buddhist holiday, to buy some soda water..

    ... Cannot sell, Buddha day.

    - But it's soda, no alcohol .

    ...Cannot sell, Buddha day.

    -It's soda, no alcohol.

    ..Cannot sell, Buddha day.

    - ok

LOL, yeah some are just dumb as a door knob, we had one girl not allowing us to buy a red bull so my fiance told her off and she sold it and made some remark how she thought it was alcohol bla bla.

You didn’t upset me at all, it’s a very real world I live in where people appreciate the tips I give for their good service. The upside of that is called mutual respect, probably an unknown concept to those who think tipping isn’t “required”

Get it through your head, they DO NOT respect you for paying more, got it?  You do live in a fantasy world for thinking that. Leave your customs in the US where they belong. Thais are a totally different culture.

As does most of the world. But thats part of being the Big Boy,  you gots to shell out. And while they may laugh behind my back, Im only interested in the way they act to my face.

But if you want to experiment, lets go to the same bar every day for a week. Ill tip, you dont. Lets see who they smile at....

I don't need to experiment. I been living here the last 10 years, I have more Thai friends and have gained more respect than you by doing things my way. I hear all the laughter and comments they make behind the backs of people like you. ?

Years ago when I was a starving student on a ED visa, I used to go to hotels grab the key and immediately walk out the front door.  This was because even though I had no luggage (just a backpack) some Thai guy would walk me to my room, expect me to act amazed at how the aircon worked, then immediately stuck out his hand.  Some say the "wai" is the ultimate hand gesture of Thailand - no this isn't true - its in reality the extended open palmed hand in which you are to of course place money.

One time when I grabbed the key and came back hours later, there was a knock at the door.  I hadn't told anyone where I was so this wasn't a friend.  What could be wrong?  I open the door to see a hotel clerk standing there with his hand out.  That's all - just knock on the door and there he is demanding a tip because I managed to get to my room without paying the troll who guards the bridge I guess.  I said "mai me baht" and closed the door.  I was only staying one night so low chance of revenge fortunately.

Sounds made up, but instead of giving them money when he stuck his hand out, you should have handed him your rubbish.

Tipping IS required in Thailand, just not everywhere. Street food stalls, definitely not. Local style restaurants not really unless the person serving you is particularly good at service and not the owner. Taxis I round up to the next 10 baht or for a nice driver a real tip. Hotel restaurants will normally add service but I generally leave a bit extra for good service. I’ve basically learned appropriate tipping from Thai friends

Sorry to upset you, but you live in a fantasy world, tipping is NOT required in Thailand. You made all that up.

i need help with this desperately. i simply don't understand my partners reactions to things. he thinks i am too "straight" - or too direct when i am talking to him. i love him but i don't think we will last if someone doesn't help us talk to each other in a way that is satisfying to both. if anyone finds a good counselor, please post it here. maybe someone could start a site with advice on this?!

what happened in the end? you find one?

"many Thais don't even know their own defamation law"  I go so far as to say most people of any country don't know their country's  defamation laws. maybe a very basic outline of said law, but most people wouldn't have the need to know.

Though I would expect a lieutenant in the Royal Thai police force to know them. I was told the officer who said he could go to jail was a lieutenant.

As they were the only two people there at the time so no independent witnesses why didn't your friend counter claim that the cashier had threatened to call the police with these false defamation accusations if he didn't pay her big money and she should be charged with defamation and extortion.

Hard to believe. Still easy pickings for her, probably make a career out of it now.

cause it's easier to pay the fine and avoid any even worse situation, than wasting time and paying more at the police station. Plus he wasn't too sure what was going on, when his wife said he could go to jail, she came in when the police were already there. So she wasn't to sure what was said to who and where.

Tasers are classified as non lethal weapons in Thailand and hence can be kept in home or car for self protection. They are illegal to be carried in the streets, but as Nordlys says most people don't care if it's legal or not. It is not classed as a serious offence. The only problem you would have is if you actually killed someone, which is happening more and more in the States. :o

wow, it's rare to come across a normal reply to a normal question on TV.

  17. I am not sure whether they are just plain ignorant to the law, or use it as an excuse to scare foreigners, or just both.

A friend of mine owns a bar and he called the cashier a thief and a liar to her face, in his own place of work. They were the only 2 people there at the time, so she calls the cops threatening defamation, so the cops eventually arrive claiming they can take him to jail or a big fine etc unless he apologized and paid her 2000 baht in compensation. Seems pretty stupid to me.

The law is pretty clear to me (pasted below) that it's only defamation when you say these things to a third party, meaning anyone else as opposed to the "victim's" face.

defamation is defined as whoever imputes anything about another person to a third person in a manner likely to impair the person’s reputation or place the person in contempt or hatred by others.

For road rage to happen you need 2 angry macho drivers. You can get into a road rage every day or never. Choice is yours. Luckily most Thai drivers behave but a good % are complete wackos, distance yourself as fast as possible from them, it is surely not in our nature but that’s where brains should take over.

I beeped my horn at a driver who was driving worst than normal and he chased me down the road and threatened to shoot me. What is the mentality of thai men when they threaten murder over something so trivial.

    never happened, yawnnn
