  1. I've been driving around for 30,000-40,000 km per year with my regular driving license.

Did have some minor accidents, no problem.

Was stopped several times, no problem.

Did rent a car a few times, no problem.

My insurance accepts my driving license.

It's not said that an IDL or IDP is for tourists only.

AFAIK an IDP has a validity of one year and is valid in Thailand for 90 days at a time.

If you are a "resident" of Thailand; leave the country every 90 days and get an IDP every year you're covered.

Of course it's easier to obtain a Thai DL.

Allow me to pose this question then...it obvious you are "resident" here irrepsective of the "legal loophole" you cite...but why havent you gone to get a Thai DL, with a current foreign license its easy and cheap to get..so what is it...too lazy or cant afford the THB 500 it costs to get one...?

Soutpeel, I am NOT a resident. I work here and I am permitted to stay as long as i work. As soon as I end my current job I'm supposed to leave the country within 24 hours. Besides that, I do have to ask permission to stay every year. IMHO NO resident, just an alien with a non-immigrant status.

The reasons that I don't have a Thai DL were written down in my post and I would like to refer to post #21 from NomadJoe.

And oh oh, what a poplular reply: Can't you affort the THB 500?

You are funnier than a doorknob!

And yes, I'm too freakin' lazy!! whistling.gif

what part of post #21 are you referring to....too much cut & paste in that post...

Actually if you are working here on a Non-imm status/WP...you are classed as a "resident" of Thailand for the duration your here...so in fact you should be on a Thai DL...wink.png ...your not a tourist...

so will inquire again what prevents you from getting a Thai DL ?...you are "resident" in Thailand, by virtue of the fact you work here and you seem to already have a valid foreign DL...therefore the process for you get a Thai DL is very easy....PP, foreign license,WP and THB 500 and your done, nice new shiny 1 year Thai DL in a couple of hours...

and thank you for your kind words on my sense of humour...

Do I just need to hand all of that in and I can get one? or do I need to take a test again?

  2. I live in Hua Hin and recently there has been a lot of police stopping and checking for licenses, I know this is valid for a car but do you reckon sometimes the police won't have a proper read through the permit and let me get away with it?

Yes, happens very often, but also you might not. In the tourist areas they are now employing foreign volunteers to read the licenses to tell if it is correct.

Have the volunteers really got nothing better to do?

  3. If buying the iPhone 4S at PowerBuy I might avoid discussing SIMs there, just to avoid confusion.

If you want to buy a TrueMove H pre-paid (micro-)SIM at a phone shop or a 7/11, that's fine. You can bring it with you and activate it when you buy the phone.

Do you have a feel for your calling requirements? How much data do you think you'd be using?

You could get an iPlay SIM: http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/3g/packages/iplay/entry/604

Then maybe layer on a data plan: iNET 599 http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/3g/packages/inet/entry/583

I'd always recommend an "unlimited" plan which offers unlimited internet usage, even though your speed will be reduced once you reach your threshold. This way you don;t have to worry about per minute or per KB overages.

You may also wish to consider a post-paid plan but that might require more a of long term commitment, along with a residency requirement.

I wouldn't be making to many calls, most of the time I use texts more than calls, I think the 'unlimited' plan sounds the best for me as I would be using the internet the most. At the moment I am spending about 200 baht a month on topping up my phone, if I get the internet on my phone I would be using less also as insted of texting I can just send messages via facebook.

So do you think I can get a unlimted plan where I can use internet as much as a like and in that package would it come with a certain ammount of minutes for calls?

Thanks for your help, you've been great!

  4. Ok, so I want to buy an iphone 4s.

I live in Hua Hin but i've read about someone having a problem when buying on from there. So I'm thinking either A) Go to Bangkok to buy one or B) Order online.

On the apple store http://store.apple.com/th/buy/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone4s?product=IPHONE4S I can get one for 19,500 'unlocked' by the term 'unlocked' what does this mean exactly? Will I be able to put my old sim card into this phone?

Also If I ever have to go back to my home country, would I be able to use a UK sim card in the iphone ok? I've read somewhere that some phones are locked into the true network, but I am guessing that if the phone is 'unlocked' it means I can use any sim? Am I right?

if you think it's better to buy from Bangkok, does anyone know where's a good place to buy one and why it would be better to buy from the shop rather than online?

    Any help would be great

    Thanks!

  5. I’m looking to buy a iphone 4s but I am wondering if it’s possible for me to pay for it month by month eg; 2,500baht each month..

My friend said they think it’s possible with a credit card, but the card I have is just a SCB debit card.

Anyone know if this is possible?

    Thanks

  6. What is 'living illegally' ? Was he a squatter ?

From my point of view he did not anything wrong, just a guy who does not live conform some manmade rules.

It seems he lived in a house that was not occupied by someone else.

He stayed on a piece on earth that should be free to use for all of us.

He loved herbes that were made by God, with the reason to use them to free our minds.

    This is not a criminal.

I was almost agreeing with you until you brought up that 'God' guy from the fairytale stories.

What is this 'god' thing you speak of? It is some kind of department store?

  7. Good luck back home. When was the last time you were back there?

For me the journey has just started, I moved here when I was 19.. now I am 21 with what I hope to be a great future in Thailand ahead of me.. But life can't promise anything, will just have to wait and see what happens and take life as she comes!

But all I can say is the last 2 years of my life have been the best I have ever had and to be living here at my age is a dream come true.
