  1. It seems my point is being missed I will reiterate.

All reports regarding this crash state excessive speed, looking at the photo's it does look credible.

So if this was a thai teenager speeding down beach road and crashing would it be an accident? No, reckless driving!

But an old farang man driving at excessive speed in an extremely busy area for whatever reason is an accident, No again!

  2. Whistle blowing would be an excellent thing for Thais to get excited about, if they understood the meaning. by the description of the app - they don't. Another club for the collective.

This is more like a digital petition, which is at least some form of legitimate protest.

    Good point.

Maybe this is a way of side-tracking censorship, just a whistle blowing app!

Call it a petition and maybe it gets clamped down on, maybe.

  3. AFAIK, this ICJ ruling is not about that temple - this was already ruled upon many years ago and it was awarded to Cambodia. That will not change.

What is being decided upon is who owns the temple car park ....

    Simon

    True.

Don't forget the access rights, it is pretty well inaccessible from the "Cambodian" side.

The government don't care, little money to be made here, only for the local people and monks, car park, stalls, entrance fees etc.

  4. They are both screwed for life now.

RIP the motorcylce taxi driver, and don't forget his family.

They met in an institution so had already both broken the law. 15 back on the streets and then what?

They probably don't even come from Pattaya but just came here thinking it an easy place for quick money.

No education, no prospects, shafted basically.

Unfortunately this goes on all over the world, especially in Counties with no safety net, social security.

  5. Bottom line, his actions resulted in loss of an innocent life. If medications were to blame it really doesn't makes the situation any better for the ones who suffered loss or injury. He should have been aware of the potential of driving with the combination of condition and medications could be. Maybe not? But still he is culpable and his actions can't be rationalized and my opinion. Take a look at the pictures, massive force in the collision, coil springs ripped from the chassis, not the normal fender bender-the vehicle was completely out of control. Great flu, there were not more deaths.

People have to be willing to accept responsibilities for their actions instead of rationalizing a away to justify one's poor judgement. It would not work back home in our countries and it should not work here.

I hope, he never gets behind another steering wheel ever.

Yes I would add to that he never gets I see day light again

I am sorry but if my daughter was run over by a driver , drunk, on medicine or sober

I would kick that person be it man woman or kid until I physically can kick no more

If my daughter was beginning her life when some idiot came across and either broke her leg or killed her then I would see justification for a bearing or worse

It amazes me how much people complain about the way people do thins out here and compare the way should be the same as in their own country like the US or England or where ever

If it is so bad why stay here

I like the thai way and the way this alternate system works

That man deserves death penalty some countries would give it

    Defiantly life

I hope the families of the people he killed shall step up

And if it wasn't drink? If it wasn't drugs? If it was a stroke or other accidental event beyond your control or not of your making? What then? Let's hope you never have an accident.

Again the word accident is used in completely the wrong context!

This was not an accident where a minor mistake was made resulting in a crash.

This was at the very minimum reckless driving resulting in carnage, death and injury, a criminal offence in any country

I don't agree with the beating but in the heat of the moment these things happen. They didn't kill him and he doesn't look the worse for wear in the photo, minor at most.

  6. U know this sickens me. Im sorry for the person who died and the injured. But as i said in an earlier post. Accidents happen. BUT in our host country, that being Thailand i read every single day without fail about Visa buses, tourist buses, ferrys and u name it driven by Thais who are not professional, who probably dont even have a license, high on drugs, alcohol, tired because they want to earn that extra bit more. And they jump on a 72 year old man who was not drinking but could have had a PRESCRIPTION pill due to an ailment and had an accident. Its us that should be jumping up and down not knowing if the mini bus to Hua Hin or where ever is been driven by some one reliable. Over 30 ferangs have died in buses etc over the last ten days. Now they want to put seat belts in the buses. Excuse me, what about the tires, engines and above all the drivers. Ok this is all off the track..... But the german had an accident. Lets see whether he has drugs in his blood stream. Lets wait to hear the true story.

    A great post, indeed.-wai2.gif

    Really?

Accidents happen, true. An accident is an unforseen event occurring while driving within normal limits etc.

If you have seen the photo's of the incident, this was not an accident but chaos caused by at least the minimum of reckless driving (consider speed here).

    Cause as yet unknown!

What this has to do with minivans is beyond me, there are many threads on that subject!

  7. The article should note that charging the driver with reckless driving causing death in an accident like this is standard procedure until an investigation can be completed. It's one of the reasons why people flee accident scenes here.

But the drivers nearly always turn themselves in or are tracked down, so can you further explain your reasoning that this is why people flee scenes here, exspecially if it is just standard procedure until an investigation?

Yes the drugs or alchohol are out of their body by the time they turn themselves in. Straightforward.

  8. A boat doesn't sink because it's bilge pumps don't work, it sinks because it is leaking, and they were running the bilge pumps as a band aid fix. when the bilge pumps quit, there was no hiding the problem.

To recap, the boat had a cracked bow, was overloaded, the bilge pumps didn't work, and the captain was high.

These types of boat will leek a little that's why they have bilge pumps, but if you ground the boat on rocks they will take on more water than the pumps can cope with.

My question is was it common for this captain boat driver to be under the influence of drugs? were his employers, crew and others in authority aware?

I think it is better to use the description of "Boat Driver" as Thailand chooses not to recognize intentional boat handling certifications that are far superior to any training these boat drivers have to achieve to take charge of these boats.

Agree entirely, most of these boat drivers wouldn't make cabin boy anywhere else.

Simple Captains fault together with the ferry company.

  9. PM to follow up on Pattaya ferry accident during Chonburi visit

CHONBURI, 5 November 2013 (NNT) – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will visit Chonburi province today (November 5) to follow up on the case of the sunk ferry in Pattaya that has claimed the lives of 6 tourists.

A ship operated by the Koh Lan Travel company sank off the coast of Pattaya on Sunday evening, after it departed from Koh Lan with around 200 passengers. At least 16 passengers suffered injuries.

Saman Khwanmueang, the ferry's captain, asserted that the boat did not run into reefs and was not overloaded. The man said he believed the bottom of the vessel was damaged by violent waves.

Marine Department Director-General Sorasak Saensombat said ships operated by Koh Lan Travel are being grounded pending re-inspection of their condition. Permits for the company's remaining 6 vessels will be cancelled if the ships fail to pass the inspection.

Damaged by violent waves?/??? Under the sea level?????

This guy has been watching the jet ski operators.

If there were violent waves (the captain's comment) then why did the captain sail at all?

Firstly violent waves, BS, the sea has been calm for the last week and it wouldn't have caused this anyhow.

As a diving instructor I have been to this site many times, if the photo is correct then it is simply human error.

All boats go around this point leaving at least 100m between the point and the boat, reason reef rises to 1 - 2 meters at that point!

The boats I use are serviced regularly and into dry dock asually twice a year, are these?

Will anything happen, I hope so but I am always sceptical here.

Whenever I have used these ferries I always have my family on the top deck with life jackets in site irrespective of the fact we are all strong swimmers.

  10. On Pattaya's main pier it was business as usual Monday for the operators of double-decker wooden ferries preparing to take tourists out on day cruises.

"After an accident like this the boats should be grounded for checks but today they are all running," said a European working in the city's marine tourism industry who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The boats are very old. There's no maintenance. They are always overcrowded... there's no head count."

says it all really, nether the police or mayor or government or boat mafia gives a toss, only quick money runs Pattaya

So what, life comes to a stand still after every accident? I guess any remaining day-trippers left on larn were to be left stranded there for the nite. I haven't heard of any other ferry sinkings subsequent to this tragic event so why inconvenience everyone with your silly suggestions.

This wasn't an accident, it was manslaughter. The first thing the police should do is secure the scene of the crime and that includes stopping all tourist boat traffic with immediate effect. Operations can restart when real safety is put in place. Better inconvenienced than dead.

    Agree with you 100%.

I was watching the television this morning and Bali Hai was back to normal.

Some canned shots of a few people putting on life jackets but not all.

Probably half of the tourists didn't even know what happened yesterday.

How did the "Captain" get away, had to be via speedboat I guess.

Incidentally someone posted the Captain is not responsible for the overcrowding/headcount etc. Rubbish the Captain is responsible for everything on his boat, maritime law!

Be very interested to see what happens now.

  11. We seem to be getting some bits and pieces of what will happen to the 350billion coming out of different officials at different times.

Today we have all these channels, floodways, that are to be dug then there are the dams but is there really an overall plan?

The overall plan is really clear I don't understand that you guys don't see it.

They will select what and where to build on bases of how much can they skim of not based on effectiveness. Just look at Mae Wong they want a dam there even though its proven not to be effective so they can cut down all those expensive trees there and sell them.

They wont listen to experts, because that is not important, the skim / steal factor is important even though that means nothing will work together and it will be sub standard.

I wish they would really listen to experts make a real plan, keep it transparent so it can be checked for corruption. But a country that keeps its rice policy a secret is not an open government. A government that will lie to look good (finance minster) will not be honest.

In the end they will say the sun is shining when its raining and they will not care about it.

So what hope is there for the flood protection from this red government ........ Fill it in yourself and cry.

Spot on about Mae Wong, I actually live very close to there.

None of the locals want this and there have been several protests to no avail.

It will destroy almost 20 square kilometers of forest for what gain?????

Well it will go ahead anyhow irrespective of protests from conservationists and the people living there.

    I wonder why (not).

  12. 2 or 3 days ago i also spotted a huge slick,, of something,, at jomtien beach.. was an orange color,,, about 500 meters long in chaiyapruk area... lasted for about 2 hours before disapating into the sea... did not look like it was visable from sea level as most people were still swimming in it,,, but as i live high up in a condo over looking the area, could see it easily...

just put it down to someone poured something into drain pipe and it flowed out of a drainage pipe?????????????????????????????????????

Probably Algae, you get a lot of it at this time of year.

It will go away in the next few weeks but don't swim in it!

  13. People should read up on good samaritin laws in Thailand. As far as I know it is illegal to give someone CPR and you can be prosecuted if they die. Also I have heard that AEDs are illegal except when used by health care professionals.

Add to this that retards who cant swim continously enter the water I dont know why people bother trying to rescue them.

I certainly wont be risking my life for an idiot. If people were constantly driving motorbikes off cliffs because they cant ride would I try to stop them? I think you all know my answer. You cant help some people. Natural selection weeds out the stupid and weak.

It is called being a caring human being.

Not all are idiots, some just don't know what the warnings mean, lack of english maybe. Plus they leave the flags out all the time leading to confusion.

If I could save someone I would do it, but not at risk to myself, that is the first rule of rescue training.

  14. "During the past few years, coral reefs surrounding the island had been bleached already before the oil slick affected the island."

    How?

"some of it was already dead"

    is NOT a valid excuse.angry.png

Some of it probably was, true. I see this regularly around the islands off Pattaya where tourists are allowed. Effluence from hotels etc.

The bleach of the corals in this case is more likely due to the chemicals used to break up the oil together with the oil itself.

As rightly stated this is not an excuse.
