  1. Isn't it now time to deal with this issue once and for all?

As opposed to throwing large sums of money at the problem, which then simply disappears, or is frittered away on projects such as boats pushing the water out to sea (!!!), Thailand should seriously consider calling in experts from countries that have had to deal with major flooding problems, such as the Netherlands.

Surely anyone can see that if a full-scale flood prevention program is not put into place, these headlines will simply be repeated year after year...!!

Actually The Netherlands has thrown tons of money at the problem and they even still get floods, especially in the south!

Plus the Netherlands were invited, offered solutions and the usual happened with the money allocated.

I agree with your point though, if this is not dealt with it will just repeat itself every heavy rain year!

  2. Well if it is only the street walkers, coconut girls etc not a bad idea. pain in the rear to be honest.

How they would do this in the bars is another issue, plus the police would lose a fortune!

    can't see that happening.

Pattaya has been like this since the Vietnam war, do they want it to return to fishing village.

Like many have said it is the dirty beaches and sea that are a bigger problem to real tourists! Clean them up.

  3. Vinegar has been used for a long time, and as others have pointed out is common on beaches and dive boats.

Some times on a dive boat it can take a lot of time before you are back on land, never seen anyone seriously ill due to the wait, but they do leave scars.

Clean off the tentacles preferably with tweezers, if not use your fingers but wash them regularly whilst doing so.

The alternative, as now taught in diver first aid is hot water, 42 - 48 degrees centigrade or as hot as you can bear it.

In reality you will have more chance of finding vinegar on a beach than hot water!

Best thing, take the vinegar with you, preferably white vinegar.

Of course get to the hospital ASAP.

  4. Why were these people ever allowed back into Gt Britain ? Are they being persued and questioned, or do the British just leave them alone.

    Good question!!

If they know who they are then at least arrest and interrogate them.

If they are fighting against the British forces or British allies then it is treason

  5. I recently returned from a trip to Vietnam and let me say this, I thought that that Phuket had become an annex of mother Russia. From what I observed in places like Nha Trang and other coastal locations. I have changed my way of thinking. The beaches are overcrowded with Russians, the shopping centers have Russian speakers working in the department stores. Everywhere you look there are Russians. Every second tour bus is Pegas Touristk. So in reality there aren't that many Russians in Phuket. They are all in Vietnam.

Some months ago on another thread someone posted the figures - in 2005 - 100,000 Russian tourists to Thailand. In 2012 there were 1,200,000 Russian tourists in Thailand. The graph is heading up at a rapid rate.

Here and on other threads posters have said that Pattaya & Phuket would go broke if not for Russian tourists. My counter to that is maybe tourists from the European countries and other parts of the Western culture may come back to these places if they weren't so crowded out with Russians.

I can only speak for Pattaya and Jomtien but they would not go broke, maybe the 7/11's and the Family Mart but not much else.

The bulk of these tourists just do not spend money.

As to your point about the Europeans etc might return, I agree that the Russian influx is why they don't come but they have probably found other pleasant destinations now.

IMHO they are gone for good.

  6. I seem to recall reading long ago that the "Thai" people are an ethnic group that moved down here from China, displacing the darker skinned (usually) natives. So how about deporting all of them while we are at it? More chicken poop silliness. They were so quick to grab this guy, but meanwhile Suthep gets to run about, stir things up, incite and provoke yet not report for his warrant because he is "too busy". Alice in Land of Smiles.

That would mean deporting the entire Bangkok elite.

True, I wonder how many people in Thailand can claim to be 100% Thai, whatever defines that.

The majority have some mix of blood as far as I can make out.

  7. I think you have to take a closer look at what the NACC and Constitution Court really is..

    http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/thailand-awaits-crunch/966218.html

"The status of the Constitutional Court is very controversial," said Sunai Phasuk, a senior researcher with New York-based Human Rights Watch."It is a product of a coup in 2006 and acts mainly as a tribunal not a court of justice per se," he said, noting that the government had been "badly crippled" by its rulings.

A normal court does not throw out a PM because he went on a cooking show, it does not make amending the constitution to make the house fully elected a 'crime' It does not fast track cases in direct response to anti-democracy rioters.

Criminals call it a "judicial coup"

Law abiding citizens call it "being held accountable for breaking the law"

Criminals never really did like following the law and when they break it they always have an excuse. Criminals will dismiss them as "bogus cases" simply because they will never admit they did anything wrong.

The law does not bode well with criminals. Criminals hate the courts as well. Not just Thai criminals. Go to a jail in your country and ask some of the criminals what they think of the courts. They won't say the "courts are great" Ask a guilty criminal that hired a flash lawyer and got off his conviction what he thinks of courts. "They are great" "I love the courts" When guilty and proven guilty the PTP demonize the courts. Predictable antics of a criminal. When guilty, but are proven innocent the PTP applaud the courts. Typical antics of a criminal that got off.

If Abhisit is guilty of murder. I certainly won't like the result, but I will respect it. Why? Because I respect the law. That is the fundamental difference. If you don't respect the law in the first place then it should come as no surprise that it will catch up with you.

What you have said is more proof that the PTP have not completely failed. The ministry of propaganda is the most successful ministry in the government and your comments are testimony to that. Well done and I take my hat of to you for saving me the time in having to prove it myself. wai2.gif

    What garbage.

The ridiculous attacks on the government from the Court as unconstitutional are just BS. Read the constitution!

  8. As a dive instructor my advice would be the following.

Don't just look for cheap, this usually involves cutting corners/standards. Safety is No 1 in diving!

Go to an accredited school PADI 5 star or similar

Get references, look on the internet, scubaboard etc

Good luck I hope you learn to enjoy diving as much as I do.

  9. please remember the constitution was formed by the Military and amended by.......... (drum roll)................the Dems

and he claims it's "unconstitutional" so he's not voting?

    hmmm should someone remind him?

Again this is why I'm so confused. My short attempt at research tells me that the constitution and whole electoral process that the undemocratic democrats and the absolute democratarians of K.Suthep are all sooooo upset about were actually created by THEM ... why cant they just be honest and say they screwed it up themselves and just want another free undemocratic hand to try and stop other politicians from beating them at their own game .. it's almost beyond laughable if this is true. The Yellows with the support of the Army (or is it really the other way around if we're going to be really honest) built this constitution that they keep going to court with to stop YL from doing anything ... and they use the EC to try to stop democracy from working so they can stage another coup to do yet another rewrite ... have I got this right?

Something else that confuses me is the Upper House ... I think I've read that YL wanted to change the constitution to make it 100% elected by the people and the democrats are opposed to this. Err excuse my absolute ignorance again but doesn't a democracy REQUIRE a fully elected upper and lower house ... I mean come on ... that's kinda the WHOLE POINT!!!!

So when I see people opposing a government body being fully elected, staging one coup after another, minorities preventing normal citizens from voting, passing the blame of their own flawed constitution onto their more successful opposition, trying to change the constitution (yet again) to prevent a govt from offering popularist policies (the whole purpose of a political party) I have to wonder why they just cant be honest and say they don't want a democracy ... why the charade???

Could it be perhaps that they actually realise they will never win an election democratically? I really think that they aren't so angry with Thaksin as they say, moreover they're using him to distract the public from the fact they actually have nothing better to offer themselves ... I mean I challenge any pro-Supthepian to offer me the wonderous policies he has to help grow the country for all Thai people (economics, education policy, health policy, etc) ... and whilst you're at it can you also explain to me what the yellow policies are because all I can find them doing is opposing everything.

i see and agree with your last paragraph.. there do not seem to be any. BUT i would ask what is the Phua Thai election manifesto?

Exactly the same as it was when they were elected last time.

Am I on the correct website.

A considered and intelligent observation for a change. Not just the usual rhetoric.

  11. I am not entirely in the same situation as we live in Nakhon Sawan.

I have a 16yr old stepson and in the beginning several years ago it was a bit difficult for him (and me) as he was the only one in that situation.

We just tried our best to work together and overtime we have a really good relationship, his school grades have really improved.

His mates in the beginning were a bit curious but never abusive, at least to my knowledge, and now they are regularly at our house when we are there.

Ours is a very small village where everybody knows each other and half are extended family anyhow. Maybe that is the difference.

I think like the OP says it is about talking to the child and giving love and support.

We now have a young daughter, so 50/50 and my wife wants to move to Jomtien when she reaches school age as there is more of a mixture of Farangs with Thai wives etc, we spend half our time there anyhow.

Also she believes our daughter will benefit from an international school as Thai schools are too limited.

I also think it depends on the individuals, not all Thai's are the same, like us there are good and bad, mainly good.

  12. 'Complete city shutdown' Wasnt that what he promised back in November? and again in December? and again on 13th January? Has he cried wolf too often?

Even if he succeeds which I sincerely doubt, Bangkok has not been shutdown once.

The North are all going to vote, I put money on for who also.

Not sure what the end result will be due to amount of votes etc (whether election validated) but PT will get the most votes by a long way!

  13. For months, or weeks in the case of the sudden inrush of newbies who came aboard about the same time that PTP announced the launch of its propaganda campaign, Thaksin's defenders on this board have been saying, "watch out, watch out, Suthep and the anti-government protesters hate farangs and are going to get them kicked out of Thailand." And, now, poof! The side that decides to make the farangs the scapegoat is PTP and the government. Time for a new line of argument from the boiler room, I guess.

Not sure how you work that out.

Seems to me the majority of these newbies are for Suthep.

  14. My friend was on the Peter Pan boat that rescued customers on the Aladdin and filled us in on the situation when it ocurred yesterday. The reason why you see all the people jumping off the boat is not because the boat sank so quickly. It's because the customers decided to prioritize their luggage and put it on Peter Pan before getting themselves to safety. The boat took about 20 minutes total to fully sink and they had about 10 minutes to board Peter Pan. Some of the divers even had time to put their BCDs on. They can all swim. What you don't see is the panicked local staff that couldn't swim and all the brave people that jumped in to help each other.

What would you rescue first, your iphone or yourself? The customers chose their belongings.

To be fair in this situation if I could save my stuff I would, I would certainly get into my dive gear at the very least.

It is amazing that the local staff on some of these boats can't swim, I have seen it, it should be mandatory.

A few people bashing on about dive boats sinking all the time, they don't. Most are well run and seaworthy. With the odd exceptions.

    Glad everybody was OK.

  15. Want to see if we get the same "mind your own business, solve your own problems at home" comments. whistling.gif

Since when is having only 1 major Party running for Parliment

    Democracy

In German1940 the same Britiish Parliment called it Dictatorship

The Dems decided to opt out themselves, they were not forced out of the elections. In fact should they choose they could still take part.

Nothing like Nazi Germany at all

  16. Got to admire the fact that TAT's glass is always half full, even if they do spout utter sh!t.

A few old Lincolnshire things we used to say------TAT is similar to...

    Bungalow--no one upstairs,

Haven't got all their chairs in one room,

House with light on but no one at home,

Have had a pheasant fly away,

A bread loaf short of a crust,

any more lads ??? this is on topic as it describes TAT's crazy ideas. You see if I had 6 billion budget to spend without being monitored I would go crazy.

One sandwich short of a picnic

One brick short of a load

    There must be loads mate

Woefully inadequate to describes TAT unfortunately

  17. Muslims around the world should protest this treatment of muslim Rohingya by Myanmar and the traffickers in Thailand. It's a disgrace.

What like Bangladeshi muslims? Who declared them stateless also.

Unfortunately the bulk of the Middle East are too concerned about funding other issues than this sort of thing.

It has been happening for years, sad but true.
