    CAMPAIGN FOR SAMET ISLAND

Appeal for hair to soak up spill

    The Nation

KOH SAMET: -- Concerned residents have pitched in to clear up the oil spill at Samet Island and are now campaigning for donations of hair to soak up the spill.

The call was spread over social networks including Facebook and Twitter for barbershops and beauty salons to donate the hair.

The hair would be stuffed into nylon stockings to form a "hair boom" and placed in areas of the spill to soak it up.

It is reported that each pound of hair is capable of absorbing as much as a gallon of oil. Wool, animal hair and fur coats could be used for the purpose.

The campaign also calls on people to visit the affected sites to help clean up the spill.

    Just read this.

You couldn't make this BS up could you?

Although it sounds bizarre, it is a good way to soak up oil apparently: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8674539.stm

    Agree, my point was

    a) the quantity it can absorb

    B) the quantity of hair required

    c) time needed to implement this

PTT should be doing this, correction should have already done this.

Not relying on goodwill from the people.

  2. As usual, too little too late.

Emergency procedures should have been in place.

maybe they were for 50kL which this clearly isn't, much much more.

If it gets to the beach you are way too late.

Another serious problem for the gulf ecosystem.

By the way fisherman and hotels (large) contribute to the environmental damage daily, <deleted> should they be compensated?

  3. Ply Pirom, campaign manager for Greenpeace Southeast Asia, said PTTGC must take responsibility and compensate for all cleaning up processes, the environmental impact and damage to tourism industries and local fisheries caused by the crude oil spill.

When will the local fishing industry pay for the damage they do on a daily basis to everything? My guess is that the fishing industry does a lot more damage to the environment than the PTT does. Much of it simply because they do not care, such as when they dump oil, garbage and fishing gear which all ends up on the beaches.

Very well said, being a diver I see this all the time.

  4. hahahaha...yeah right, getting tough after all these years of tourists being ripped off. Guess he isn't getting his cut of the action.

    Exactly my first thought!

The businesses he refers to are the foreign owned companies, what about all the illegal non tax paying Thai businesses?

Also hit the Taxi's, Tuk tuks and jet ski's, these are the tourists biggest problem. If I see that then maybe just maybe they are on the right track.

  5. why are there so many generals in thailand ? and why are they all so rich ?

because they can be bought or hired and have deep fingers in all illegal activity

Well they need a lot of generals don't they?

More to the point why are they not down south doing their job.

Anti coup law, yep that will work. Morons.

  6. Isn't this an old story (about a person who didn't know better than to intervene in a Thai fracas -- perhaps an unfortunate person with good intentions who maybe doesn't understand the importance to Thais of saving face)?

You're an idiot. This has nothing to do with thai people. This exact same scenario happens all over the world. More often than not someone that wasn't even at the bar and is just walking by at the wrong time gets hit.

Yea happened in Melbourne Australia also where a passer by broke up an attack by 3 Thai's against a single Aussie. The 3 Thai's then left and returned with knives and stabbed the aussie to death, they then fled back to Thailand where two are apparently connected and extradition was not granted on the grounds that Aussies are racist and they would not get a fair trial.

Yep you are very correct Thai's do exactly the same thing in Australia also and it is not just Thailand.

In principle you are saying only Thais do this. Hogwash.

This sort of crap happens all over the world.

The simple way to keep out of it is to leave. I never get involved in bar fights that do not concern me or my friends.

Why would you feel the need to?

Obviously the guy felt he was doing the right thing, but look what happened! Could have happened in London, NY etc not just here.

Feel sorry for the guy in hospital, hope it goes well.

  7. I have travelled a lot on public transport in Thailand and in general they are pretty good.

regular stops for both driver and passengers, two drivers to share the load etc.

Having said that this knee jerk reaction is ridiculous.

The vehicles should be thoroughly tested at least once a year. My car, 12 yrs old is tested (albeit poorly) every year.

There should be roadside inspections on a more regular basis, not just for overloading.

Of course this has to be policed correctly, some hope there.

  8. I am not a religious man.

I leave anyone to his or her beliefs.

    But.......

There are more or less moderate religions and there are religions that must be spread by the sword.

    Look around the world.

Anywhere there are problems, you will find the religion that must be spread by the sword..

In this case you are incorrect. Buddhist nationalisnm, led by monks in Myanmar, is a major concern. Buddhist lynch mobs have killed more than 200 Muslims and forced more than 150,000 people, mostly Muslims, from their homes to date; look up Group 969. In addition Rohingya (Muslims) had their citizenship revoked in the 1980s. The UN and other agencies identify the Rohingya as the most repressed minority group in any country worldwide with current estimates of more than 800,000 in Myanmar who are still stateless.

Buddhist nationalism in majority Buddhist countries such Sri Lanka, Myanmar & Thailand is an increasing cause of concern with non nationalist Buddhist leaders.

These people may call themselves Buddhist but no true Buddhist would condone this.

  9. What is this total paranoia Thai's exude from every pore.

Most bigoted people on the planet, foreigners can't own land because presumably they will buy up the whole country or push up prices for land (not if Thai's don't ask inflated prices in that equation).

Foreign owned businesses pay tax and vat (unlike most small Thai businesses).

Don't Thai's get it that any business legally paying taxes and salaries to anyone Thai or farang is a good thing for Thailand as that money goes straight back into the economy in not only tax but in restaurants, taxis, shopping, housing etc...

In most developed countries foreign investment is encouraged because the government's are aware of the potential increased inome that may be created.

    Not Thailand.

The attitude of 'they' will steal our land and jobs amazes me.

One Thai girl, with a university degree and a straight face, once told me that 'America just wants to steal our rice and England stole our cats.'

    <deleted>...

Everyone I know does this, it is the only way.

As for the Thai with the university degree, bought from here by the sound of it.

They are targetting Phuket first but it will spread.

  10. Hi, does anybody know if this bus was going to Udon?. My best friend and his Thai GF were travelling up there yesterday by bus.

    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried calling your best friends mobile?

I am unsure how the Thai's are going to solve this ever increasing problem. With the potential for a new super port being built in Myanmar the industrial road traffic is only going to get much worse. The only way to start resolving the issue is to get Tacho's fitted to all public and commercial transport vehicles and checkpoints set up on major highways. Sever fines for those braking any laws brought in (alongside installation of Tacho's) and severe penalties for any police who fail to fully report any vehicle/driver in breach of the law. The drivers and haulage companies would soon smarten up after a few serious penalties. I know, I know..this is Thailand, but something has to be done.

That is really the only solution coupled with quality driver training.

Will this happen? Not for a long time I fear.

    RIP

  11. Red flags on the beach mean it is dangerous to go into the water - full stop.

If you saw a red flag in February it still applies - Phuket beaches are prone to suffer from rips - this has nothing to do with big waves and if you have ever had the misfortune to get caught in a rip you will know the incredible power unleashed by them

Rips occur at different places and different times on the same beach ( they move ) - the lifeguards and people who know what to look for in the water can tell where a rip is likely to form and will plant a red flag in the area

Please do not confuse "big waves" with rips - they are very different and a rip is very dangerous

    Agree entirely.

These are warnings, if you don't know what you are doing don't get in.

These people in Phuket do a good job at risk to themselves. Respect.

  12. That's what you want millions more tourists throwing rubbish all over the beach and blocking up already overloaded sewage systems ,more cars busses and pollution .

I went down south last week and it was filthy ,the beaches and water just made me want to go home were I don't have to look at it ,and chooka your right that's the phillipines ,I'll show you a shot of a thai beach ,from Samui and you understand why they wanted to show another country's beach for promo shots.

Pretty much the same as the beaches round Pattaya/Jomtien.

Not so sure it's the tourists here, well other than the Russians and the 7/11 junk.

At the weekend it is full of Thais from Bangkok, guess what, the beaches are a complete mess on Mondays!

As to the money claims, according to my friends here these Chinese/Japanese/Indian/Asean tourists spend little or no money so where is the benefit from them coming?

  13. This does not happen every day. Not all Thais carry samurai swords or other weapons, the vast majority are just the same as us and disgusted with this.

I have lived here for 5 years and visited for 30, had my odd altercation with taxi/UK UK drivers but never a serious problem.

Thailand is no more dangerous than anywhere else.

    RIP the victim.

  14. This has been happening for years.

Being a diver and living here I have seen the drop in fish on the reefs.

We cut a huge net off a wreck a couple of months ago that was torn from a bottom trawler. The net mesh was 2mm square, nothing esvapes that. These are the fisherman causing the decline, the big boys, not the local guys with the fish traps.

Pollution in populated areas is another big issue.

The only way to stop it is education and enforcing the existing laws with massive fines. Money talks here.
