Ubonjoe, lots of us on this forum appreciate your encyclopedic expertise and kind assistance.
I'm American, been living in Chiang Mai several yrs on Non-O with extension of stay for retirement, my wife is non-Thai. Our
infant son now has U.S. passport and we plan to go to Penang to get his Non-O so he can follow on my extension of stay.
Previously, in Savannakhet, the consulate asked to see a copy of my house lease. Should I take it to Penang just to be safe?
Thanks again.
Penang will not ask for your house lease. Most important is that you have his birth certificate with you.
Ubonjoe, I don't know where to post this, but...
I just read an urgent notice from the Honorary Philippine Consul in Chiang Mai about Thai immigration saying
that foreign children must have a proper visa by 20 March or they will be banned.
Here is the link --
http://pinoythaiyo.com/2016/03/01/foreign-children-must-obtain-visa-before-march-20/
I couldn't find anything about this urgent notice on Thaivisa.com, but would very much appreciate your comments.
Thanks, Brad

UbonJoe, thanks for all the valuable help and info that you provide for so many members of this forum.
My wife (non-Thai) has been on an ED visa which has now expired. She needs to leave the country to
get a non-O visa so she can be included on my 1-year extension of stay based on retirement which is
good to June 2016.
My question is: can she get the non-O visa at Savannakhet? Her tourist visa is good to 31 July.
Thanks, Brad
She could get her single entry non-o visa in Vientiane, Savannakhet or Penang without a problem.
She will need a copy of your passport photo page and extension stamp. Plus your marriage certificate. If the marriage certificate is not in English it will need to be translated to Thai..
UbonJoe, thanks a lot for your expert, succinct and timely reply. You are a national treasure... and if you're not you should be...

I've bought several used parts from Rungrot Auto Parts, always received friendly, professional service and reasonable prices.
Directions: From train station go east on Charoen Muang Rd, past Super Highway, continue about 500 meters, watch for a
place on the right with fork lifts and truck cabs sitting out front.

It's very dangerous, and plain stupid, to try to run away from an armed officer and to disobey his orders. You may not deserve to get shot, but you're going to get hurt.
Off the cuff I can only name three countries where law enforcement officials shoot/shot unarmed civilians in the back when they try/tried to flee:
- Former East Germany
- China
- North Korea
Keeping good company I see.
Do these countries have police that encounter well armed, dangerous, gang bangers high on drugs that won't think twice about shooting someone. In many urban US areas, cops are working in areas that are like war zones dealing with gang bangers and people that place little or no value on human life. I have literally worked on cases where someone got shot over a piece of chicken.
I don't think cops in China and North Korea constantly face face well armed thugs on a day to basis that are not afraid to shot cops or others.
That said, how many other cases inn 2015 involve a cop shooting an unarmed, black civilian in the back? This cop did wrong and he will be prosecuted.
Are you saying that since American cops often encounter well-armed thugs this has some bearing on why this cop murdered this unarmed black man in cold blood?

as long as idiot westerners call themselves ' farangs' its hard to imagine anyone showing them any form of respect. can u imagine a chinese or thai guy in the uk calling himself a yellow man,,,
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
If farangs are not farangs what are they?
If you can suggest another term (in Thai or English) to refer to foreigners who are not Asian I'm sure
lots of folks would be happy to learn what it is.
And where did you get the idea that "farang" is derogatory? Since my first visit to Thailand (April 1962)
the great majority of Thais have always treated me well and I've never heard anyone use "farang" in a
way that seemed derogatory -- except for a few farang on this forum.

The revered monk is the sworn brother of Mahesuan. The two led separate gangs to raid the rich in the Central Region in order to distribute ill-gotten gains to the poor almost 100 years ago.
So since Mahesuan died at the age of 101 and I doubt the monk is 100 already, I take it that they started the raids at the age of 1 and the other one way before he was born.
Faulty conclusion and faulty math.
"Almost 100" is not 100. For example, 89 could be considered almost 100. If he started leading a gang
89 yrs ago he would've been 12 yrs old -- quite possible he could have led a gang at 12 in those days.

Sankampaeng....green, quiet, no crime, light traffic on a big road 15km to center....and so much cooler than center CM!
+1
San Kamphaeng -- east along Rt 1317 -- is very nice, quiet, green & cool.

I have had a bike here for 12 years and have always kept the green book under the seat. Had two bikes in that time and never had one stolen, tho there is always a first time. Asked to show green book twice, both on sukhumvit south of jomtien.
Obviously, you've been very lucky for 12 years, but the question is -- why would you want
to set yourself up for the possibility of making a thief very happy. Doesn't seem logical.
That's like all the folks who carry their cash in their wallet. When I was 14 yrs old i had $5
stolen from my wallet in a school locker room. Last time I ever put cash in my wallet.
I always keep my cash in the front pocket of my trousers. As long as I'm still alive a thief
will never steal my cash. And if I'm dead i won't give a damn anyway...

I'm also a vegetarian and I love the vegetarian pad thai at Ton-Wah in Chiang Mai -- 35 baht.

any engine driven hard should be run at idol for awhile to let the heat even out.
I beg to differ...
Having ridden bikes all my life and having worked 10 yrs in service/maintenance in the (Honda) motorcycle business
I'd say there is absolutely no benefit to letting the bike sit and run at idol after a trip or after a race.
The professional auto and motorcycle racing teams never do that.

During my last 2-day stay in Vientiane in 2013, the tuk-tuk drivers invariably demanded 300 baht
for a trip that would normally be 30-40 baht. I did a lot of walking.

The Toyota is famous for reliability, but way too boring.
The Ford Ranger is very nice looking, but a bit too expensive compared to the competition.
And if you want to add roof rails to your new Ranger you have to buy a whole dress-up kit
(which includes "upgraded"grill and non-functional fiberglass roll-bar) for 100,000 baht.
If you want to add roof rails to your D-Max the cost is well under 10,000 baht.
Also, the new Mitsubishi Triton was just released. A lot more for the money and well worth
considering.

Probably the most ridiculous list ever made.
If Tokyo is dangerous, nowhere on earth is safe -- so totally ignorant.
Where is Peshawar, Pakistan on this list?

I am not too sure what education is needed?
It's really common sense and nothing else.
No explaining or educating will change the behaviour.
Mandatory classes in Chinese schools to learn about western culture is the only way.
We automatically learn "common sense", in Asia common sense is hard to find, because ii is not Asian.
"... in Asia common sense is hard to find..."
Seems like a huge lacking of common sense in this statement.

Thailand dont complain as China will soon control your country
Based on current economic projections, within the next 10 years China may control a
lot more of the world than just Thailand.

Some unfinished business for the new UK Technology Centre - fix the oil leak.
To be fair - my Enfield Bullet Thunderbird that I ran in India didn't leak any oil and it was a very enjoyable bike to own.
And according to the BBC - Enfield India now sells more bikes globally than Harley.
I hope they get a local dealer in Thailand. 500 Classic for me.
It's rather amazing that the oil leak problem persisted during 60 years of UK production
(1910-1970), but now with production in India evidently the problem is solved.
As with many British motorcycles, it was a beautiful machine, but too many flaws.

Possibly because shaking hands is not a Thai custom. Nor is the current craze for fist-bumping. You never know where those sweaty hands have been! Some Thais view a handshake as merely the symbolic touching of hands.
The 'wai' is both hygienic and respectful.
Very well said.
Handshakes are not part of the culture in most of East and Southeast Asia. Having lived a number of
years in Japan, I can say that limp handshakes are also very common there. The few Japanese guys
I met with a firm handshake had lived and worked in the U.S.

Another one looses everything. When are the old men going to wake up?
Certainly there are lots of old fools, but I'd be willing to bet that for every old man (over 50)
that gets duped by young girls, there are probably 3 or 4 young guys who "sell the farm" for
a bounce in the hay.
Of course, it's very foolish, but if you think it's mostly old guys you deceive yourself.

Yeah thailand is pretty depressing. The antidote is an air ticket somewhere else
Any place is depressing for folks who carry their depression around with them wherever they go, like this lady, she brought it with her.
She should get lots of sympathy here on TV, many folks here who also brought their depression with them and now blame Thailand for it.
