  1. They have been doing a lot of work at night, which is unusual - they were re-sealing sections of the road either side of the main construction area directly adjacent to Tesco over the past few nights.

Daytime seems hit and miss as you have noticed :)

  2. Not so relevant to Penang discussion, but I can offer that Denpasar and KL would not issue 12 month Non Imm B visas.

I thought KL might issue a 12 month Non Imm B, but they would only give me a 3 month single entry 2 weeks ago. Same with Denpasar 3 months prior. I did not try Jakarta (I was there earlier this month), as I was told beforehand that they would not issue Non Imm B there - others may be able to say differently.

Out of interest, in March I got a 3 month Non Imm B without a Work Permit - but this was with all other required paperwork and my original work permit application receipt from the Labour Office.

For KL 2 weeks ago, I showed all required paperwork including my Work Permit which had been issued after I arrived back from Denpasar in March.

  3. 4 - Hitting the pot hole made him accelerate to maximum speed. Nice trick. Maybe some rocket scientist of physics professor can explain how that happens to me.

How about the involuntary or accidental movement of his hand in the wrong direction on the throttle when he hit the supposed pothole? I have seen inexperienced riders increase throttle before when suddenly in an unusual situation. I have even seen experienced riders do this.

  4. Lets them make some extra money from people who don't redeem their unspent coupons/cards. In some food courts the coupons even expire that day so you can't go back the next day to get your money.

I think the onus there is on the customer to remember to cash their card in to reclaim the unspent amount after eating. From what I have seen this is usually made fairly clear in signage and on the card. I could imagine a few get caught out though, would be interesting to see how much revenue this actually raises. Bet they don't split it with the tenants though!

  5. <snip>

As much as I hate cigarettes, not sure how smoking pilots in the cockpit smell can get to the passenger cabin.

I can think of at least one regularly occurring example of how smoke can get out a 'sealed' cockpit (assuming it does happen to be sealed)

If either pilot comes out to use the toilet, or the cabin crew take in a coffee/snack/whatever, then you're going to smell it if you're anywhere in the front half of the aircraft. A 737 ain't a big space.

  6. If your a Tourist why do you want an account, do you open one in every country you visit. Or are you not a Genuine Tourist.coffee1.gif

What are you, the tourist bank account police? Hardly a helpful response.

Plenty of reasons why genuine tourists might want or even need a bank account.

I spent a decade working in neighbouring Myanmar while more or less based in Thailand for my frequent breaks/shopping trips etc.

Having a bank account (which I opened on a visa exempt entry as a genuine tourist) was very helpful for paying rent, doing shopping etc.

To the OP - Kasikorn near Suk Soi 6, took a friend along who already had an account there.

  7. The shop is on the bypass road, 300 metres before the Tesco traffic lights as you travel from the Toyota Pearl junction, on the left-hand-side, just before the Tannachart Bank. It is called VTM Automation. They usually have antenna masts outside (they install mobile phone and comms masts up to 120 metres in height).. They will not sell you a 'black' handheld without sight of a licence smile.png

    Thanks Simon!

Our guys include Thai National Park Rangers with licences for radios - we will go and have a look.

    Cheers

  8. The black hand-held radios, Motorola brands etc, cover VHF FM only, including police, amateur and marine bands.

I have a 5 watt hand-held radio (Vertex brand which is Yaesu company ==> good quality, splashproof radio). It doesn't cover the aeronautical band (which is AM anyway). But the Phuket shop where I bought it only sells it to people holding a Thai amateur radio licence, (or to police, military etc).

    Simon

And could you please tell me where this Phuket shop is?

  9. The op was asking where to buy them.

Phuket Town. At the light by Dowroong villa and school, heading to Phuket town, about 100 m to the right, after crossing the light. Their entire window has displays for Yaesu and other walkie talkies.

The wonders of modern technology (or at least google street view) - your directions were good enough for me to find this:

Google Street view of a radio shop - is this where you meant?

    Thanks for providing a location

  10. Just wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to source some decent quality handheld radioes (2-way walkie-talkie type) in Phuket Town, Chalong or Kathu (Phuket Town preferred)

Something like Icom or Motorola with a decent 5km LOS range preferable.

    Any recommendations appreciated!
