The mechanic in Krabi is trying to sell the car on my behalf. I have already sent him all the paperwork required such as copies of passport and visa etc. Now he tells me my visa is out of date, but it isn't; I only renewed it for another year in January. Am wondering whether to approach the police here on Koh Lanta (tourist police or directly, Traffic cops) for further guidance as I just want to make sure it's either properly sold or scrapped so that I am no longer responsible for it. I have also asked for some kind of document confirming the sale. At some point, I have to inform my insurance company that it is no longer on the road, too, I imagine...

It's too expensive to fix my old car (1994 Nissan NV, engine needs replacing) so I had it towed by my breakdown service to a garage in Krabi. The blue book is in it. I told the mechanic that I would not repair it and to scrap it and that he could keep anything he made from selling parts. My mechanic in Chiang Mai says you don't need to do any special paperwork when scrapping a car - all you need is to have its blue book.
Who else - if anyone - do I need to inform (the Roads Dept., my insurer etc.)? Is there anything else to bear in mind?
Thank you

I bought my car and got my license (a trade-in for my EU license) in 2014. My license expires next November. Since I am now on a "retirement visa", will I be able to renew it?

Thank you for the helpful answers, have a good day.

I've had an account at Bangkok Bank (unnamed very downtown branch) for years. Over that time, the service has gone from respectful and welcoming to indifferent and now simply disdainful. So I'm wondering whether to a) change my account to a different branch or b) switch to a different bank (KTB or SCB) at which I already hold an account and where customers are treated in a more fitting way. However, I believe that when it comes to receiving payment from abroad for the purpose of visa extensions etc. Bangkok Bank is the clearing house through which all international payments are channeled. Is this the case and, if so, is it wisest to stick with them albeit a different branch?
Any pointers? In addition, are there are banks, or specific branches, where you feel the customer service is exemplary?

https://aqicn.org/city/chiang-mai/ shows readings in the 150 range today, Oct. 18.
Earlier than expected? What is going on?

As confirmed by you experts, on check-in in Europe I was indeed asked (by Qatar) for a return within the 30-day exempt entrance method I chose to enter even tho' my actual return with Qatar was for March 2023. Fortunately, I had bought a ticket via onwardticket.com.
Issue solved.
Thank you so much

So, if Qatar request one, even tho my return is with them in March, I may need an onward ticket with another airline within the 30 days?
-
I arrive on Sept.30 and have a return ticket booked for mid-March. I intend to enter visa exempt then do border runs or a visa run from a neighbouring country once my 30+30 days are up. Do I need an onward ticket that is earlier than that as a precaution to show at border control when I arrive in BKK? If so, what date should I choose?

I hold a sum of capital in the UK. Projected inflation this year is 18-22%. If I transfer it to my Thailand (I already have a bank account) where inflation is much lower, does this provide me with a hedge against inflation (assuming I later retransfer it if and when the THB is at its strongest point vs the pound)?
Thank you

Does Thailand insist on a minimum no. of days spent in country if you are on a "retirement visa" e.g. 183 days?

I'm interested in getting a UK postal address aka virtual mailbox that can forward mail if necessary. Any advice?

I would appreciate feedback on the following idea:
Is it viable to stay in Thailand on a retirement visa and set up as a sole trader in the UK to be able to invoice clients (teaching-related work, proofreading, editing etc.)? What pitfalls could you foresee?
Thanking all those who reply with constructive advice in advance

Background: I have been resident in Spain for three decades. Fiscal residency is part of it. My UK accountant recently asked me whether I had filled out a form at the time I left that confirmed to the UK authorities that I was no longer resident (I forget the exact name/number of the form). In any case, I did not, but that did not seem to present a problem as far as he was concerned. My question here is the following: I have read that, in the event I decide to renounce my Spanish residency (I am considering relocating to Thailand either to resume a teaching post that I had to leave last summer owing to family matters and Covid, or to go on a retirement visa (the 800K bank deposit type), the Spanish authorities automatically assume you have returned to your country of origin and notify the UK Govt. Is that the case? Where can I get informed about it? What if you decide to reside in a third, specifically non-EU, country?

Arm chair lawyers are amazing -there are ways to deal with HMCTS and IHT as there is no jurisdiction in Thailand - they have a very vague reference to assets "anywhere" and the USA has its FATCA laws - and Thailand has a very high level on assets that normally don't apply to most people.
Fail to plan plan to fail
BlackJack, can you be more specific about what you mean by "Thailand has a very high level on assets that normally don't apply to most people." Do you mean the Thai income tax rate on assets?

Thank you to all those who have made useful contributions so far.

If I am in Thailand on a "retirement visa", and resident here for over 183 days per year, what would be my tax liability if I received an inheritance in the UK (using a non-UK resident offshore bank account)?

Any advice on coming up with the requisite paperwork to leave Europe? I'm presently in Spain, where anything other than non-essential travel is banned. I asked a university in CM about getting an Ed visa but they said they cannot help with the visa until I am in country. I'm wondering what paperwork I could present to the authorities here to justify my leaving the country - don't think it needs to be genuine, just something to show the authorities at the airport. I have an apartment in CM; is there something a lawyer could draft that would suffice? Or medical grounds?
Thanks in advance

I'm wondering if you're opening a potential taxation can of worms having work payments paid directly into a Thai bank account for work that you're obviously doing in Thailand. Of course maybe that's why you don't want to do what I suggested, to have the income paid to your home country, for tax reasons.
Precisely. Have been on a work permit for the past few years (up to 2020) and having the money paid in each month has not been an issue. But, looking ahead to the possibility of returning on a retirement visa, I'm trying to foresee any potential hiccups.

good, useful answers so far - thanks to all of you. I was wondering if Immigration gets to see your entire bank movements over the year. In that case, the solution might lie in having the 800K in one a/c and receiving the monthly income into a separate a/c. Surely, they would not have the time/means to inspect more than your primary bank a/c...

He doesn't need to say anything if he isn't using an income method. The sums he mentions include some transfers under 65K per month so I just assumed he was going to use the 800K baht bank method. The issue I see with third party "payments" that aren't normal transfers from his same name account abroad is that such regular "payments" do suggest that he is working in some way.
yes, I intend to use the 800K method. But would a bank 'flag' such payments? Or just be happy that money is going into the account.

I'm not in LOS atm. I make a living teaching online (yes, you guessed, Chinese students). Now I know you are not supposed to be earning money while on anything other than a work visa, so my question is: If you get a monthly amount paid into your Thai bank a/c from abroad or via an online payment platform, would your bank inform the Immigration Dept.? The amount might fluctuate between 40-80,000 THB per month.
Getting to the airport on Monday 15
in Chiang Mai

I live near Warorot Market and have to get to the airport by around 12:00 on Monday. Being the peak of Songkran, I'm wondering about the availability of Grab/songthaews/taxis as well as the best route to get there as expect gridlock around the moat (tho perhaps that is not an issue till afternoon). Advice please and/or contact details for a taxi I can book in advance.
