  1. Standard CD players often fail to read MP3 files burned onto discs. This is the case with my car CD player which, although it states it will play MP3 format, can't actually do so with the CDs I've burned myself.

Do fellow forum members know of players that will do this? Or ways to get round this?

  2. The air-conditioner in my condo pumps out cold air for a few hours after which it seems to lose its ability to chill the air and just pumps out room temperature air. I have no knowledge of the workings of air-cons. Granted it is old but I had it serviced last year and I know they refilled the refrigeration gas it contains. What reasons can forum members posit for its failure to work properly after a short time?

    Thank you

  3. Try as I might I can't locate this fine Vietnamese coffee in CM. I even contacted the main SEA distributor in Singapore who said it should be available at Tops Market stores but the two Tops I have been to here don't have it. Any ideas?

  4. Someone offered a CD with study notes for a CELTA course on Thaivisa Tutoring Services in January 2011. I have tried to contact whoever posted it but without success. Does anyone have this or
something similar? I begin teaching in October and need to get
up to speed after some time away from teaching.

  5. Don't know if this should be in the motorcyle section or not: I've driven a scooter on many occasions in CM but now I'm coming to live there, I may buy a scooter/bike. I am thinking about one of those ones the Thais ride with a side trolley thing, not a side car really. You can carry stuff in it and another person can sit on it. Apart from it being useful for transporting stuff, I figure it's safer as it's more stable. Don't know what it's like to ride though and wonder about manouevering in the traffic etc. Any thoughts?

  6. Insurance at that age is just not possible. AIG will only give travel insurance up to 85.

Government Hospitals are very good and very cheap in Thailand and they do react kindly to elderly people. I am 83 and always get well treated so don't worry

But isn't it obligatory to take out insurance, whether it's from the point of view of the Thai government or the airline? Are you saying that, despite it being unavailable, she should just go ahead and travel anyway?
  7. The background: I spend winters in Chiang Mai. I want my mum, who will be 87 in September, to come out and escape the UK winter for a couple of months next winter. In the UK she is covered by the NHS. Where should I start to look for insurance policies for someone of this age? She is in good health in general, no serious ailments, walks with a stick. Thank you for your help fellow forum members

  8. Beg to differ: the first part of the sentence states he has only a tourist visa and bought a motorbike with no problem. He then goes on to say, starting with an all-important "but" "but, for the green ownership document yes, you need to get a residency certificate from immigration", implying, as I understand it that a tourist visa does not suffice. Are you certain

you have understood the sentence? As a 1st timer in Thailand, I have no clue about green books/the process of buying a vehicle but his post seems to imply to me that the process of owning a motorbike can have two stages.

  9. In response to Eyecatcher's comments about his experience of buying a bike on a tourist visa: "bought a new motorbike, no problem..they just need the cash, but for the green ownership document...": please clarify exactly what shows you have bought the bike if it is not a

    green ownership document?

You extend your stay - not your visa. The visa is only used for entry. So it does not have to be within its validity date to extend. People extend for decades after they arrive on a visa.

"Decades"?? Wow, I assume you mean via visas obtained in other SEA countries. Can one get double entry visas in neighbouring countries?
  11. I suggest you contact the one of the honorary consulates in Spain about getting a tourist visa rather than the embassy.

Contact info can be found here: http://www.guidetothailand.com/thailand-travel-information/honcon-europe.php

Unfortunately, the information at the website to which you linked is out of date. The Thai consulate in Barcelona closed 3 years ago. That leaves Tenerife. Am awaiting a reply to the email I sent to Madrid seeking clarification of the double/triple entry question. Thanks for all the feedback s far
  12. Wait as long as you can before you get the next VISA (ie. days before arrival in Thailand). For example, a double entry is only valid for 3 months. So if you're getting a double entry with hopes of staying 6 months, the clock actually starts ticking from the day you get the VISA, not the day you arrive in Thailand.

I don't think it is like this in fact. I obtained the visa in September but only arrived in Thailand in late Nov. I extended it 2 months later here in CM and got 30 days more. This went smoothly. If the clock had actually been ticking from the day I obtained the visa I guess I would have had a nasty surprise at CM immigration in January when they would have told me that my initial 60 days were up in December, right?
  13. I have checked out the Thai consulate in the UK in Birmingham and Hull, the latter stipulates UK residency as a condition, nonetheless, when applying in Germany the fact that I was not a German resident was not an issue. UK triple entry would be the best if it were not for this prerequisite. Any further advice/information on Spain vs other options in Europe much appreciated.

  14. Situation: In September I got a double entry visa from the Thai consulate in Berlin. It started when I arrived in November. Am now on the second part of it. I leave in about four weeks to return to Europe. I want to be back in Thailand before midsummer.

    So far so good.

On returning to Europe it is my intention to get another double entryvisa from the Thai consulate in Spain where I reside. Question no.1: is it possible to get a triple entry visa from a European country?

Question no.2: I intend to come back to Thailand within, say, the

space of 6-8 weeks. How quickly can I request my next tourist visa/ what gap if any should I leave between arriving in Europe and requesting my visa-is it advisable to wait a bit?

  15. hi all, I have prepared my application for a 30 day extension next Friday 18th. My question:what is best to put as the reason for extension? Just tourism or should I put learning Thai language-which I have begun to do at the YMCA?

    thanks

also: optimal arrival time suggestion would be appreciated.
