  1. If I could get out of Europe right now by plane, arrive on a 60 or 90-day tourist visa then convert it into an Ed. Visa of any kind, I would, but outward travel from the country I'm in is forbidden unless you have an acceptable reason to travel (and visiting the LOS on holiday doesn't cut it) - study abroad does. So, I am wondering if there exists a college or university course that would provide a study visa with which to a)be allowed to leave here and b)enter Thailand. Any ideas much appreciated.

Your details are a little vague - Will you still be earning money in Spain and do you own a property there?

If you are planning on cutting all ties (no Spanish residency) to move to Thailand then I don't see how they can have any say (as you are originally British). However I am guessing that you plan to still work and if so then will depend on Spanish tax law and the DTA referenced by the previous poster.

Makes no difference which visa you have. You are theoretically tax resident if you spend more than 180 days a year in Thailand. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to pay tax here as I presume you know?

In the event I terminate my Spanish residency, no longer earn anything in Spain and am not a property holder there, and I then move to Thailand on the basis described, what kind of tax liabilities would I face in LOS? Would I be taxed on money in a bank account (poss.offshore) in the UK or only money I deposited in a Thai bank. p.s. until last year I held a job in LOS and have both bank accounts there and a property. Thanks

  4. I am a UK citizen resident in Spain for the past 20 years. I pay taxes in Spain where I am self-employed. I have a property in Thailand. If I decide to move to Thailand on a retirement visa (the 800,000K in the bank type), can I move my tax residency there or do I need to maintain residency in Spain for tax purposes?

  5. I'm planning to send a light parcel i.e. around .5kg to Europe. What are my best options in terms of value-for-money, reliability etc.?  I don't know whether to go with Thai Post or a courier service. Since the contents are reading glasses worth around $3-400, who offers the best insurance?  Any special packaging instructions?

I ordered them before leaving in June and would obviously normally not do this but as I am unable to return for the time being...

    Any advice much appreciated

  6. Thank you everyone for your helpful advice. I will try out the options suggested

Only insert the Thai SIM when required (unless you have a dual SIM phone in which case use the settings to ensure your home SIM is used by default),

I do have a dual SIM phone. So, use a local SIM then insert the Thai SIM for the operation? How does this avert the roaming charges issue? Will I receive the OTP as an SMS via the AIS SIM?

Same as Lazada, ALL member, and many other things. If everyone complained to the companies involved directly then maybe they would start to think twice.

As a joint approach would be more effective and there must surely be other foreign users of Grab in Thailand who would like to get this discount, is Thaivisa.com a forum where it is possible to muster support? If so, how?

You should have no issues getting a tourist Visa after paying your fine.

If you are planning on obtaining a new 1 year extension, you should get a letter from the school cancelling employment. You can exit without it but then will have issues getting a new extension/work permit in the future if you don't cancel extension with immigration.

How can I go to Immigration and pay the fine but not request an extension? By extension, you mean extending the annual work visa, I assume. And no, I do not imagine I will be seeking work again here. Once bitten, ...

If you so not plan to work again, leave by air and your extension will be canceled...but why not exit after you pay your fine...why get a new extension if you don't plan on working there ? Can you explain to me the steps in the right order i.e. submit resignation/get letter cancelling employment/leave without a reentry permit...

  10. I work at a government university in the north. I have to pay for my own work permit and visa. One month separates the expiry dates on them, the permit on Aug.30, the visa on Sept.27. My contract gets renewed in early-mid August every year. The necessary papers then have to be signed by the Rector. Every year it's the same last-minute rush to get them in on time before the permit expires. This year it was too late; I got to the Labor Dept. one day late. Result: a new permit/book must be issued. This requires a different set of papers, entailing a return to the university and another few days wait. Meanwhile, the Labor Dept. official tells me not to worry since there is still a month to go on my visa. Eventually, the papers get signed. I hand them over at the Labor Dept. and wait for the new one to be issued (1 week later). I pick them up on the Friday. On the Monday (still 9 days to go on the visa) I go to Immigration. The official says " According to the regulations, your visa expires when the work permit expires. Ergo, you have now overstayed by 20 days and owe 10,000 baht. Needless to say, the Faculty will not pay for this as they have no fund from which to compensate me. I must pay it. Thus, it seems to me I am being punished thanks to 1. misinformation by government officials and 2. incompetence by my employer.

Obviously, I am considering resigning. Basically, I want to be able to come back in on a double entry tourist visa obtained in Europe. Much though I am tempted to uproot and seek better treatment elsewhere, the simple fact is that I am too invested in this country to do that-my assets here include a condo and a car. Assuming I pay the fine, I am in the clear with Immigration in terms of overstay and they give me a new one year visa. Should I get a reentry permit as per normal? Can you actually leave the country without one? At what point should I inform the university of my decision to resign-before I go away or while? How long does it take them to cancel the contract and inform the authorities? Is getting back in on a tourist visa viable?

Thanks in advance for any advice to this thorny question. Am in need of as much sound advice as possible at this moment...

  11. Prior to doing an MA TESOL I would like to know whether it will be of any use in securing a job at an international school here in Thailand. From what I gather, Masters in Education and or home country-based teaching certifications e.g PGCE in the UK seem to be the normal requirements along with a number of years actual teaching experience. At present I hold a BA, a TEFL cert. and several years teaching experience at university level.

  12. Bought a couple of new pen drives at a market in BKK a few weeks back. They have both set off my anti-virus program on numerous occasions. It appears they come with pre-installed malware/viruses. Has this happened to anyone else? It had never occurred to me this could happen.

  13. I would very much appreciate any advice concerning how to bill the work I do for translation agencies based in Europe or other continents while living here in Thailand. I am here on a work visa, working at a university, so I already have a Thai bank account. In my spare time, I am a translator working from several European languages into English. What do I need to do to set up a means by which I can bill this work here in Thailand via my local bank account? I am happy to pay tax on it since taxation rates here are so much lower than in Europe, something that could give me a competitive advantage in the market since I would be able to offer cheaper rates.

    Any advice welcomed

  14. Funny that because I find getting all sorts of things (small services on my car, repairs to clothes etc) done here in Thailand amazingly easy and pleasant compared with, say, Europe. Do you mean to say that no Thai or indeed carpenter of any nationality working here is not interested in doing a job for a couple of hours for which I would be prepared to pay around 500 Baht, well over the standard minimum daily working wage? Thanks for the reply btw

  15. Need a handyman/carpenter to repair the bed in my condo. Probably one to two hours work. Any ideas? Earlier posts on this topic here yielded useful info but are now archived or if I call tel. nos. of people recommended I get no answer
