  1. I would ask firmly for a replacement out of guarantee or not, one expects more than a lousy year for a major non-moving component.

I gave my girlfriend an iBook whose screen went like yours. it turns out to be another very common fault and it's one big chip on the board whose multi-ball soldering comes loose. I added pressure with a ten baht coin from the inside, and it's even been done by making a fire on the chip with alcohol in a nightlight can sitting on the chip and watching a sample piece of solder placed there to melt (it's then hot enough). Still works after many months.

Don't know if something similar can be done Good Luck.

ps: nothing but good service from Apple CM though replacements from Singapore can be pathetically slow that's Apple not them.

  2. IP address of the DB is set in the DB menus if static or DHCP if dynamic.. So if you have a router look in the routers config panel for connected clients or do a pingsweep over the IP range to see what you get a response from.

I have created a Bouquet of True in proper 1:1 number format (with all the gaps).. I could upload that if it is of help.

If anyones done any clever grouping they like maybe we could share those also.

In fact, thinking of it.. If theres enough dreambox users, theres a few files, not in any way related to the encryption, that we could share.

Thanks LivinLOS I should get the IP that way.

Can I then connect MacBook to the DB with a LAN cable and configure that way as there is no USB plug on the DB?

ps: How would you define your word bouquet, I've heard it but would like to know more?

  3. As mentioned earlier, Dreambox users are not affected by TrueVisions logic (?) in channel re-arrangements. There's a freeware tool called DreamboxEdit:

Download the scanned channels, put them in folders as you like it and upload the whole thing back to the receiver. One can even rename the channels, eg. TCCN -> Cartoon Network

Voila, channels ordered in folders. No need to remember channel numbers anymore.

    Thankyou for that Prasert.

I just downloaded iDream for Mac. Only trouble no USB connector on the box. Is it tpossible to connect and re-program via an ethernet cable?

The other thing, how can I find the box's IP adddress?

    cheers

  4. I'm not informed enough to understand the higher thinking behind putting a Chinese channel between BBC and CNN and another one between CNBC and Bloomberg. A simple mind like mine would have thought you put all the Thai channels together, all the English channels together and so on.

    Could anyone explain?

  5. Never bought a copy myself only genuine ones. A mate bought one for his phone and it exploded. If you do buy a copy keep a watch on it not getting to hot.

Instead of 4000 baht for an Apple charger I bought one for 130 baht.

    6 months later running sweetly.

ps In case you think I'm a cheapskate 6 months ago I also taped a 10 baht coin inside an iBook case to keep pressure on a video chip which had desoldered itself resulting in no screen.

    Still sweet!

  6. I told him he was very lucky that she did leave, as being a Farung I am sure he would have had to pay to fix her car.

My experience has been quite different.

I have had two at fault people drive into my car in recent years.

One paid a fair repair price of several thousand baht on the spot, think i paid a thousand more for the repair.

The other also admitted fault but we went to Changpuak Police Station. They took down the details and we had a chat and it was agreed he would pay me at a certain time next day, to be witnessed at the station. Next day he wriggled and said he couldn't get enough money blah blah I refused his offer with the desk sergeant looking on and said we already have an agreement and I have to be without a car for three days that's quite enough hassle thankyou, he then went to his other back pocket and took out the money ha-ha!

It was duly recorded as paid and the book closed. Quite a good informal way of dealing with things I thought.

I think the rule is....be reasonable and polite, don't ask for the world, and be willing to possibly lose a bit......and things seemed to work out OK.

Personally I think we should, if it's not reckless, behave as we would like others to behave if we were in a problem. Toshikun displayed this.

I was in a pretty posh hotel reception area when I saw a 40yo Japanese or Korean hitting an elderly farang (probably only five years older then me :)) sitting down with blood all down him. The doormen were just looking on! I dealt with him with appropriate force. It turned out he was a guest I think as he came back in later, but under close escort. The management came and apologised and thanked me profusely. No problemo.

  8. If it is on previous rice field, I would think the first 60cm will be soft planting darkish clay followed by firmer red clay.

Constructing a single floor extension on such soil will require reinforced concrete beams and slab, and footing pads on short concrete piles of 5-6ft length that can be driven in using a sledge hammer.

But be prepared for some differential settlement between old and new structure, probably 35-50mm over a 10-year period. What you should aim for is even settlement, and since the extension is a bathroom, there will be a natural drop of 1 to 2 inches. So start off with the floor of the new bathroom being the same level as the existing house and slope the floor finish of the bathroom (1:100) towards a floor drain at an inside corner.

Really 5 to 6 feet that much eh?

Now you suggest it the differential settlement thing makes sense to me.......but not sure why you're suggesting sloping towards the inside corner ( I would normally choose an outiside corner due to the position of the septic tank and the fact there's already a 90cm wide concrete walkway around the house which I would have been going over with the floor of the bathroom.....I would be going altogether about 2 metres wide off the house and 3 metres long, just a little en-suite affair).

    Thanks for your interest.....

  9. I feel terribly sorry for folk to whom the pennies are all important and the terrible quality stuff which ends up costing them more. Once again the rule keep your mouth shut instilled by the ruling classes is the problem. No complaints=continued rip.

Over the years before I left England many tradesmen were passing over to using a cheap brand available from the otherwise unappealing B & Q. About 20 to 40 GBP for most power tools. Yet they did pretty damned well. Even with daily use they would go OK then if something died just replace it.

Cheap does not have to be utter rubbish.

  10. Is your house on a hillside with super hard clay beneath, or in a swamp floating on 30m of soft marine clay?

It's in a good quality flat farmland area 20-30 minutes south of Chiangmai and not far from the river, but not floodable. Just after the road which comes across east from Hang Dong/Baan Tawai towards Sarapee. I guess you'd call it the Chiangmai basin or plain. Out of interest anyone know what general soil type that would be?

  11. None of the above mentioned sample agreements are complete!

Here are some clauses that should, among others, be part of any agreement:

    1. Governing Law

    2. Arbitration Rules and Procedures

    3. Termination for Default

    4. Suspension

    5. Force Majeure

    6. Title and Risk

    7. Language Precedence (if agreement is written in two languages)

    8. Order of Precedence

    9. Termination for Convenience (applicable only if the agreement is with another sub-contractor that is dependent on another contract)

    10. Addressing and Responses

    11. Survival After Termination or Suspension

    12. Liquidated Damages

    13. Definitions

Just to name a few clauses.

Also seem to remember something about insurance Strghe,......what would that be?

  12. I'm transferring this from DIY as no replies.....

    Hi

I am presently preparing a plan and spec for building a third, en-suite, bathroom as an addition/extension around the corner of a house. An existing, second, bathroom on the same side has started leaning off the main house by an inch and more at the top suggesting soft soil or settlement as the water pours off the roof for a year or two (house 8yo). It's a fairly sizeable and proper house and no settlement elsewhere so maybe this other second bathroom was added as an afterthought.

The new one will have a typical single thickness block wall with a mortar finish only averaging 2.5 m high, and I see no reason why the roof should be other than lightweight, as I'm intending for it to be open to the sky at one end with plants growing up the inside wall.

As this is more or less the same spec as the leaning bathroom I'm inclined not to just let a builder decide and I'm concerned about what to specify for foundations. The last time I dug for concrete foundations (got the blisters to prove it) in England was under the building inspector's leery eye and I had to go down 120cm!! But if it's at all deep, unless I get down to a hard layer, then I'm only adding to the weight of the foundation bearing downwards on topsoil, and spreading the load acrossways with a slab might be better eh?

Any help appreciated....I could easily guess but interested in what's normal for this modest load....

    cheers

  13. Xangsamhua,

have you ever come across the Pugdalavadins (hope I've got the spelling right).....whose name comes from pugdala (person) if I remember right? It was a very considerable sized movement on the Indian sub continent.

The Pugdalavadins thought it a good idea to acknowledge the "experience" of self. They battled it out on this with other schools for a long time, those others holding that they had lost their way on this issue and were suggesting something outside the 5 skandhas.

It is clear from the scripts however that the Pugdas were using this "self" in a heuristic way, using the pugdala as a prajnapti (leading to knowledge).

Someone else from just this....whoops last....century comes to mind.....so recent a friend of mine stayed with him. Nisargadatta, the author of the thoughts compiled in "I am That", reiterates about looking for the "true self". So much so it seems to be his central thrust. It seemed a bit at odds with Buddhism until I realised he was also using (I believe) the "self" in a heuristic way. I believe he was trying to help people see the self as utterly non-separate, one's "self" being continuous and not really starting or stopping anywhere.

To complete the circle on the posts above, if you look at Nirvana as a truly complete state of non-separation, well you might therefore call it the self!

    cheers John

  14. It depends on the TV, some TV's only allow viewing of still photos via the USB input.
I have a Pioneer DVD Player with the USB port, plays most video formats, will also play MP3's through the amplifier without having TV on.

When I look at the spec cards next to the DVD players they are very non-specific about what the USB will handle. What should I look for?

  15. Hi

I see the latest TVs have USB ports on the side. I assume I can play video material downloaded from the internet via laptop then a thumb drive then through the USB port. Correct?

It seems to me this will become more available and therefore desirable. So would be nice to have on the TV.

    Pretty expensive though.

If I get a DVD player with a USB port on it and connect to the TV would it perform the same function?

    thanks

  16. Thanx for all the great info.

Good price but I think Etihad will be indirect better avoided if possible....

Alant I've started looking at Eva (great departure/arrival time) looks to me they have fortnight-return availability earlier January don't they....eg 5th to 19th?

I've seen their website fares......is it possible to beat them elsewhere to make the Premium Economy a bit cheaper?

For about +50% is it worth getting Super Economy?

Thanx again please keep it coming my nephew who's booking things for my sister and bro in law has the link to this thread and is tuning in.

    cheers

  17. Hi there

Family members want to visit from Brighton England to Chiangmai for about two weeks (ie LGW preferable but not essential LHR do-able).

Before Christmas departure OK but not essential up to latish January OK.

They're 75+, and not used to long haul so the easier the better.

What's the best and nicest deal out there please? I want them to really enjoy their rare trip, so whilst price is important the absolute lowest price may not be the overriding factor.

    Thanx everybody

  18. I landed here 6 years ago but severe agoraphobia panic attacks started and I was unable to use the return half of my ticket within the allocated year.

    I got a hospital letter.

Not only would Thai Airways, who I'd flown with every year, not allow me to put back the date by which I would have to travel......let alone saying "travel with us when you are able"......they refused and were thus able to sell my seat after having sold it to me, thereby profiting by my misfortune.

    Well done Thai Airways.
