  1. After years of putting it off, I have been going to school twice a week to learn to read and write.

    I have run across the program above on you tube, tried it and found it to conflict with my studies. Your right Cloudhopper, there are many more aspects to learning to read/write Thai than just memorizing consonants with cute pictures. Online learning course's are fine as a help tool, to even close to as effective as an actual class room and native Thai speaker/teacher. One thing I didn't like about it and some of the other online tutorials is the narration in English by a non native English speaker.

    I wish I could make my learning experience easier, but for me a teacher looking over my shoulder and correcting me when I'm wrong and being able to ask a question at the moment is the only way I'll learn correctly. And if I'm going to put the time and effort into learning I want to end up with the best education I can get.

    With that said, if it works for you great.

  2. I'd have to disagree with you on many of your statements and on so many levels.

    But in fear of dis-ing my foreign neighbors from south of the border and saying something non PC,I will just have to disagree with you.

  3. I for one don't think we need a mass transit system here.

    I don't have any problem getting around. I know when not to drive my car and when to use my motorcycle. Or when it's benefical to take a song theaw.

    And yes, their are motorcycle taxis in CM, I use them sometimes. Their just not in town. Song theaws, tuk tuk's, motorcycle taxi's, meter taxi's, buses, walking or your private car, motorcycle or bicycle. If you can't get to where your going with all that, Just stay home...

    Mass transit woks in BKK (big city) but I don't think it has any palce or value in CM.

    The money would be better spent on other projects.

    The Failure of Mass Transit Operated by Chiang Mai Municipality

    Author:

    Prof. Dr. Manat Suwan

    Event:

    Summer School Cambodia 2007

    Well-managed mass transit and communication systems are very important driving forces for urban development. Not only do they help mobilizing people, goods and services, but good systems are also able to help lessening the magnitude of traffic problems and the costs of traveling for people in big cities.

    Chiang Mai City is considered to be the second largest city of Thailand next to Bangkok. With the number of population in the city and its vicinity of around 400,000 people, including visitors, whether they are tourists, businessmen and students who come and stay in the area, good transportation services were expected to sufficiently facilitate their traveling.

    Surprisingly, the services of mass transit within and nearby the City, so far have been unsuccessfully operated. This paper is an attempt to investigate the factors both of the server’s side and of the user’s side that have influence upon the operation.

    Needed data were collected through the reviewing of related documents as well as interviewing of the local people. The collected data were then analyzed by means of content analysis. The findings can be summarized as follows. On the server’s side, the Municipality, the factors that induced the failure are:

    1) the number of buses in service is still not enough when the number of population in the area is taken into consideration;

    2) irregularity of the time schedules;

    3) service routes are considered to be inappropriate;

    4) a strong competition from locally operated means of transportation. On the user’s side, the induced factors are found to be:

    1) behavior of the local people that tend to have less traveling;

    2) local people tend to patronage the traditional means of transportation (red four-wheel car);

    3) no big businesses in the City.

    The suggestions to improve the services of the mass transit in Chiang Mai City are as follows:

    1) Municipality should invest more money buying the buses;

    2) service schedules must be regulated;

    3) improvement of public relation;

    4) mass transit should be made more compatible by controlling the other means of transportation.

    I would not miss LK or any of the girlie bars there, if it was ever shut down.

    Hundreds maybe thousands of bars in and around Chiang Mai and at half the price and nicer girls.

    I just don't get the attraction to LK.

    are you taking about the night clubs with the young thai set, who could care less to talk to farang older guys. if not where are these bars, give some names and locals please

    No, I'm talking about local bars, That the "stuck in town crowd" never seem to venture to.

    Once your out of town there are so many bars to explore. I'm sure we all have our favorites.

    Those of us that live outside town and the LK scence will know what I'm talking about.

    Drive you car or Bike in any direction away from the city center and you will find them.

  5. I have also left my wallet at a local bar in my area a couple of years ago and when I figured out the last place I used it I went back the next day. As I was parking my bike they came up to me and gave it back to me, everything intact. Not a Baht missing. Bought drinks for everybody.

    I also have forgotten change at 711 and they have given it to me the next time I came in.

    It's good to hear the good stories about honest people here.

  6. If you have ever built a home home in your own country, you would already know the problems of building a home anywhere. Let alone here in SEA.(Thailand) Most of the complainers here most likely have not built a home before.And don't have a clue.

    As in everything "you get what you pay for" and if you want to build a house here on (the cheap) a budget you will get just that a buget (cheap) home.

  7. Building a house here is like buliding one anywhere, their are going to be many problems that you will have to deal with.

    Built my house 7 years ago to my standards and over saw the project with qualified THAI builders to western standards.

    No regrets, and the value has doubled.

    Don't let the "you cant own" and your "crazy to buy a house here" posters put a damper on your desion to build your place.

  8. All the Thai guys I've know and have seen with their fighting cocks take very good care of them to the point that some people take care of the pets (dogs,cats).

    Some of those birds can be very expensive.

    The fights that I visited have been very tame (lots of feathers flying) but never seen one that has any type of injury to the birds involed.

    I'm sure that this thread will get all the animal rights folks up in arms...

    I consider myself a right thinking person by the way.

    Has anyone else been to any of the beetle fights? Those get intence.

  9. "There are indeed a number of "loso white trash moobaans" around C.M. and that area of Hang Dong seems to have a few of them."

    Ok, what would be a couple of the names of them?

    Also what part/area of Hang Dong would you be speaking of?

  10. I also live in the area and seen her a few times. I just stay clear. As well as any foreigner driving a black fortuner.

    What constitutes a "loso white trash moo ban"?

    I just want to make sure I'm not in one of them.
