  1. Next month we are driving down to Phuket (not for golf as it is vastly overpriced there) and are breaking our journey by staying at Novotel Chumphon. They have a 9 hole course there called ‘The Beach’ ..anyone played it?..what is it like?..if ok then we might take our clubs….As happens here it’s 300baht for 18 holes this month and 1000Baht next month!!.....thanks

  2. Glad to hear you got on OK!

    I played C & D yesterday:

    Front nine: "C" - 36

    Back nine: "D" - 46

    Talk about a game of two halves :D . Storm in a D-cup? :)

Hope you guys have a great time - don't get lost in the desert.

    Edit: spelling

    Hi Marvo

Yes enjoyed it, we also went back and played there again on Sunday (16th) still 800Baht. This time I played off the ‘yellows’, what a difference…there is the 229Yd Par three and Par fours of 453 and 455 yards.

Out of interest we also played Springfield, that was ok and Palm Hills. We really didn’t like PH especially the greens which were just too fast and too bigger slopes on many of them. Back to feeding the fish with golf balls at Muang Ake tomorrow!!

  3. I phoned Lake View a couple of months ago about their much publicised 1111 baht offer and got the reply:

"Thai people only - NOT FOR FARANG!"

Don't you just love it here in L.O.Z. - Land of Zenaphobia :) .

John45, I hope the The Imperial Lake View don't embarrass themselves when you turn up at reception next month.

Well, we have just checked in and quiried the not for farang.....they told us it is for THAI and FARANG WHO LIVE IN THAILAND so I guess that there was some thai-english mis-understanding, not exactly a rare event here!!!

We will play C and D tomorrow.

  4. Who ever sold you that particular Commscope cable did not do you any favors.

    http://docs.commscope.com/Public/5730-BW.pdf

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coaxial_cable

That cable is a steel center conductor cable, which is not the best for video cable inside your home. It would be suitable for a low cost CATV system. That cable model does not even have a copper screen or braid. There are plenty of quality COPPER CENTER conductor RG6 cables easily purchased in Thailand for less money than many dealers charge for Commscope low grade cable. Belden and Pan Asia cable are widely available in Thailand.

A quick google search will show you many examples where you do NOT want to run RG6 or other video cables near to electric wire. You do not want to run telephone or internet wire close to electric wire in your home supply and wiring.

Below is common advise from a Home Theater forum:

Use quad shield in areas where there is a potential for stray RF noises to get into the video signal. Fluorescent light ballasts come to mind, as do AC power lines and network cables. The best way to prevent noise is to run the TV cables separately from other wires. Stay away from ballasts and dimmers, and cross AC and network cables at right angles. Never run parallel to or bundled with other wires.

Better to do things RIGHT, even if DIFFICULT as you will have better results long after you forget that it was "difficult".

Perhaps someday you will have a TV dish and service which will provide much better picture quality, a wider selection of programing, and lower total cost than UBC/True which looks like a bad VCD. Even worse if you have a larger screen TV.

    Thank you

Actually the house came wired with ''High Quality CoaxialCable USA Standard 2003DB'' whatever that means. From the loft it ran down to a junction box and then from there ran to each of four rooms. So previously UBC just connected their dish up to the coaxial cable in the loft. They then picked up (joined) at the room outlet with Commscope cable to the decoder. I ditched UBC a few months ago, but with their 'cheap' offer on at present I decided to return.

So I would be best getting them to run one cable from their dish direct to the UBC box I guess. I guess though that I have to accept whatever cable they supply, but could I suppose replace it at a later date.

I don't want any cables visable running along walls either inside or outside the house. I can hide them but it is a longer route.

  5. Guys

I have just run a new power cable, twin and earth, it will just be used for the TV, UBC decoder, DVD player so no more than about 400watts (at 200V). I would like, it's easier, to run the satellite cable (it says commscope 5730 Cable Satellite 3GH) next to it ie almost touching over a length of about 6M. Will this give me a problem? I do have an alternate route for the cable but it's is more difficult. I know that the UBC signal is poor but don't want to make it any worse.

    Thanks

  6. Announced on the TAT website:
The festival for golf lovers at the heavenly seaside resorts of Hua Hin / Cha-am, Thailand

    8 different courses ... 8 different challenges

fixed green fees at 8 hampionship courses* daily throughout August-September 2009

    http://www.tourismthailand.org/news/content-2055.html

We went last year are off there again this year in August for a week. We have just booked a Play, Stay and Play at Imperial Lake View. They have some quite good offers.

A Play and Stay Mon-Thu is 1111Baht each, it includes green fee, room, breakfast the next day and for an extra 500Baht you can have another green fee. So for 3222Baht my wife and I each get a green fee, a one night stay, breakfast and another green fee the next day. Not a bad deal. For Fri-Sun the rate goes to 1800Baht.

They are also doing Green Fee, Caddy Fee and Golf Cart for 1799Baht and an extra 999Baht for a second guest but you have to share golf cart.

For the rest of the week we will be staying at some other hotel and will be paying the 800Baht green fee. Unless we can find another good deal like this one at another course.

Guys...I haven't been able to find a better deal during this period, so we have even booked to play Imperial Lake View again. I have just looked on their web site and see that the promotion is still there.

I'll put a little note here of where we play and the state of the courses etc. We are there from the 10th August.

  7. I am running XP pro, I had a little problem so re-copied the saved image using ‘ghost’. Next I installed ‘Kaspersky’, I then went to connect to the internet. My wireless connection is WEB protected, if that is the correct phrase.

I entered a key, the one that I have used previously. I could then connect however it is always telling me that it is ‘Validating identity’ and I frequently see a little box saying “Windows is unable to find you a certificate to log you on to the internet”.

    When I do a check with speedtest.net I get

    519285646.png

However when I go away from Bangkok I get

    519286700.png

It's absolutely stop. I'm supposed to be on TOT 3Mbs

Some advice as what to do to clear this problem please and any advice on the speed issue. .I am actually using Opens DNS....thanks

  8. thanks for the tip, didn't run speed tests but I can tell you my e-mails with pictures attached load much faster and files download much faster.

    -----------------------------------------

y kind question is: Can somebody give me a a) to :)-point list how I shall practicly do to fix this change to opend DNS??

    Thanks for your help..

    Glegolo

Its already been pointed in an earlier post, however go to www.opendns.com and it tells you...if I can do it you most certainly can...you can even print out the instructions www.opendns.co/start/device/windows-xp/print only of course if you are using XP

  9. I have tipped others about this in Thailand, and they where very happy with the results.

Alter your DNS's address to those of OpenDNS:

    515104773.png

Well my internet TOT 3Mb is very quick when tested to bangkok but ping 495ms Download 0.35 and upload 0.34 to the UK. I have just changed to Open DNS as suggested and these are the times after changing. Having problems now for about three days. Even on this site sometimes the page won't scroll...any ideas.

  10. Ahh, just found previous posts that were very informative. Guess I'll look in a pharmacy for the milder concentrate and try to avoid ones with additives.

    Previous posts were...

Still think its worth a shot. So much conflicting info out there, simple cheap remedies tend to take a pounding from the multi-billion dollar propaganda budgets of big pharma that I tend to lean towards the people offering advice for free and solutions costing $2. You can prove anything with studies when you finance the research companies, and destroy doctors and researchers who contradict you. Hey they told us smoking was good for us, flouride is just plain delicious, mercury filled vaccines are great for you, and Thalidamide is harmless but vitamin C and Laetrile are deadly and CO2 is the devil's gas cooking the planet. Who to trust? 1 person dies from a herbal diet drug and it gets banned, more people die from pharmaceuticals than all illegal drugs combined but who ends up in jail?.... the hippy with the joint.

Hate drum circles but I'll side with the hippies on H2O2

H2O2 (sorry can't make small 2s) I don't know about drinking it, but it takes me back to my 'O' level Chemistry exam in about 1960..that was the substance that we had to try and identify. Can't remember the test but the result was a white precipiate...just a bit of useless information....

  11. nationwide have announced that they will not be puting the charge on their visa card up to1% but leaving it at .84% in july.

If it helps..I used an Ayudhya ATM resterday with Nationwide flex debit. It didn't inform me that there was a charge. I got 10000baht costing £180.78 so that gives 55.32 and Ayudhay TT showed 55.91 and BB TT 55.85 at that time, so I got charged something somewhere as what I get to TT Rate has in the past been quite close.

  12. Does anyone have any information on turn around times for applying for an extension to a Marriage visa, this will be my first extension of this type, but have extended Non Imm B before.

How long is it gonna take, can I do it all in one day? Or do they send everything to Bangkok, and I have to return to Ayutthaya some time after to collect my extension?

Do they have all the files there, or will I need to collect mine in person from Bangkok?

If my file is in Bangkok can I collect upon doing 90day reporting. It seems funny that we can pick up files but I have heard that this is the way it's done.

    Thanks in advance

I see that you live in Nonthaburi, as I do. You can still do your visa extension and 90 Day report at Bangkok. On the 5th Floor are two rooms just for that purpose and it's is very quick. It took me no more than 15 minutes to do either

  14. Agree. You'll have the time of your life! Expect rain everyday. A heavy shower that is. Ever been to NYC in the summer? Now give that 10% more in temp and humidity.

Coming at this time the girls will be more than happy to see you :) Stay on the beaten track, smile and jai yen (cool heart). Use the taxi stand at the airport, don't jump in the first taxi you see - you'll see a line of tourist as you exit arrivals: made.

    chok dee

"Use the taxi stand at the airport, don't jump in the first taxi you see - you'll see a line of tourist as you exit arrivals: made.

    chok dee"

I also hope to arrive in July at the airport but do not understand above advice.

Judging by what I read on this site and also see when I am waiting for friends at the airport I think that it would be a good idea for someone to write and pin How and How Not To get ‘transport’ to Bangkok and maybe Pattaya as well. The approx. costs and toll fees etc

  15. what a shame...

I really wonder what kind of man visits a 48 year old Thai prostitute....

O...thats an unkind thing to say...my wife is 54 but a lot of my mates still think shes a <deleted>...actually so do I.

each to there own John, whatever tickles your fancy!

Yep..she has been a wonderful wife for many years now, is a bandit off a handicap of 17 so I don't gamble too often with her..O and she has a degree. You keep on with your young ladies of horisontal pleasure if that tickles your fancy...

  16. If it's any help.

I have just withdrawn 10000Baht using Nationwide FLEX Debit Card from an Ayudhya ATM, I didn't see any advice on the fee as I used the quick 10000Baht option. It cost me £179.46 giving a total exchange rate of 55.72. At that time the Bank of Ayudhya web site was showing TT rate of 56.01 and Bangkok Bank TT rate showing 55.79. In the past I have always found the exchange rate to be close to that quoted by BB.

I also talked to Moneycorp as to the rate, they charge £15 to send money, their site said 56.19 which I though was good, however he offered me 55.05. He tried to explain the difference and said it was only about one baht, to which I replied thats about 2% and on top of that is another £15.

So, at present it looks like Flex and Ayudhya for me.

If you use internet banking and go to full statement it will show you how much Nationwide is paying you when you use the ATM, as mentioned before by a poster its Nationwide that determines how much baht to the pound

Yes, but they don't put it on the transaction page until the next day...I got the £179.46 from the 'money they put aside' for the deal. Actually they revised it to £180.18 giving a rate of 55.5.

I actually copy the full statement into an excel file...it's frightning to see how much we....well I think it's her....spend each month. Actually if you are so inclined you could plot graphs of BB TT rate against NW rate over the last few months and see if relationship changed recently. If you do could you post it please...just out of interest....thanks

  18. OK, I've zeroed in on the target Suan Plu.

Now, all things considered, it would be better for me to drive to Ayutthaya.

    That decision being made because of the maze I have to follow to get in to Bangkok city;

i.e. Drive from home to The Mall parking garage on Ngam Wong Wan Rd., Taxi to Mochit Terminal, BTS to Silom Rd, and then Bus to Suan Phlu. (probably about the same time and less hassle)

Why not drive to Bang Sue and park in the free car park. Get the underground (half price if you are over 60) to Lumpini. Exit to Sathorn. You come out by the Life Centre...good food in the noodle shop there by the way. Then get a taxi about 41baht to Suan Plu or you can walk it in ten minutes.

ps the free car park is the otherside of the railway line..if you don't know how to get there I'll tell you. There is a quick way off of Prachachuen Road, take the left to Sameanmaree Temple (spelt a bit like that).

  19. Hi just had to do my 90 day reporting at Suan Phlu, because I live in the Central Region I can do

in Room 507. Just dumped my passport and TM47 into a Box, waited for the woman to come back

from the Toilet, she picked out my paperwork, looked at it, filled in the bottom half of the TM47

and then called me to pick up my passport and the next date for reporting slip.

Time taken - 10 minutes from dropping off passport to leaving the building.

Did mine there late last week. Just the same about 10 mins. Drop your stuff into the cardboard box sitting on a chair. Best to hang around if there are a few passports in the box as the lady was too lazy to empty the box herself (couldn't reach it through her window) and ask others to pass the contents to her. Obviously they passed theirs first.

However the quickest I have ever been attended to there.
