  1. But will there be Gold coins?

Virginia coin moves closer to reality

Virginia Del. Robert G. Marshall fears that a financial apocalypse is coming and only one thing can save the Commonwealth: its own currency.

The thing about gold bugs is that they are intellectually lazy and copy and paste rubbish from every and any goldjunk website.

Their shallowness knows no limits. So now we have a fan of Robert G. Marshall. If you have any doubts that the forum gold bugs are anything other than thoroughly crass in their ideas read this about our 'new friend' Mr Marshall:

'When asked about abortion in the case of incest, Marshall replied that sometimes incest is voluntary. In response to abortions in the case of rape, Marshall said, "Your origins should not be held against you [referring to the victim's unborn child. The woman becomes a sin-bearer of the crime, because the right of a child predominates over the embarrassment of the woman." On Sept. 6th 2012, Marshall spoke at a press conference against state funding for Planned Parenthood. He blasted the organization for supporting a women’s right to choose, saying that 'God punishes women who have had abortions by giving them disabled children.'

So I am lazy and my Mom was punished for having me, a disable child? Nice to meet you too Yoshi.

  2. Thanks, thai bound for the input...

I prefer to drink beer and mix my own drinks anyways, so I should be good.

I plan on staying for approximately two months. I do plan on probably taking a trip or two to Jakarta, and probably do at least a week in good old Bangkok for the heck of it, but my boots will be on the ground primarily in the Kuta area.

Your thoughts/opinions on the Kuta nightlife/women/party situation?

    Thanks!

Just like everything in Indonesia it can be as cheap or as expensive as you can afford and as sedate or crazy and wild as you want.

Kuta Nightlife: as sedate or as wild as you want. Just be careful of spiking of drinks, beer ect ect Kuta bars are very notorious but as I said seriously check with the guys on Balipod they can point you int he right up to date direction. I have spent all of a total of maybe 7 days in Kuta (between work and play) over the 23 years I have lived here, Ubud and the north is the place to be if you take your own sqeeze.

    .

Women: Again as sedate or as wild as you want, but there are some bad seeds so be careful.

Parties: Cops always wanting to hassle and shake down tourists specifically, plant drugs on you ect ect just be careful.

Also note there are a lot of Expat conmen all over Bali Island so be careful..

  3. But will there be Gold coins?

Virginia coin moves closer to reality

Virginia Del. Robert G. Marshall fears that a financial apocalypse is coming and only one thing can save the Commonwealth: its own currency.

The idea that Virginia should consider issuing its own money was dismissed as just another quixotic quest by one of the most conservative members of the state legislature when Marshall introduced it three years ago. But it has since gained traction not only in Virginia, but also in states across the country as Americans have grown increasingly suspicious of the institutions entrusted with safeguarding the economy.

This week, the proposal by the Prince William Republican sailed through the House of Delegates with a two-to-one majority.

“This is a serious study about a serious topic,” Marshall said Tuesday. “We’re not completely powerless.”

So far, only Utah has approved a law recognizing nontraditional currency. Four other states have bills pending this year. Marshall said he is unsure of his proposal’s prospects in the Virginia Senate. One Democrat derided it as a descent into “la-la land.”

But the fact that the debate is happening at all reflects a deep-seated distrust in the very foundation of the country’s economic system — the dollar.

Much of the anger is directed at the Federal Reserve, which controls the nation’s supply of money. Since the financial crisis, the Fed has pumped trillions of dollars into the economy to help avert what Chairman Ben S. Bernanke believed could have been the next Great Depression. Critics worry the Fed won’t ever stop.

Marshall believes that the result could resemble the Weimar Republic of Germany after World War I: a worthless currency, skyrocketing inflation and a crumbling government.

And those are only the problems that the Fed might create. Who knows what other threats may be lurking in the shadowy world of cyberattacks, Marshall said. The Fed acknowledged Tuesday that its computer systems were recently compromised, although the problems did not affect critical operations and have since been fixed.

“This is a lifeboat study; what happens if?” Marshall said.

Mainstream economics maintains that America is in little danger of turning into postwar Germany. Inflation is below 2 percent even though the Fed has tripled the amount of money in circulation since the 2008 financial crisis. Investors view the dollar as a safe haven, buying up greenbacks when turmoil strikes around the globe. A single currency is one of the bedrock assumptions of modern economics.

But that doesn’t mean Virginia shouldn’t be ready, Marshall and his supporters believe. His proposal would create a 10-member commission to study “the need, means, and schedule for establishing a metallic-based monetary unit to serve as a contingency currency for the Commonwealth.”

    The study would cost $17,440.

“The resolution is pretty modest,” said Lawrence H. White, a George Mason University economics professor who said he supports the proposal as a private citizen. “It’s ‘consider the idea.’ ”

White doesn’t subscribe to the doomsday scenario, but he’s no optimist, either. He predicted that the inflation rate would rise to 5 percent before the end of the decade and eventually reach 10 percent.

Yes, I was born and bred in the "Old Dominion" or as some call it the "Mother State" and "Virginia is for Lovers" and we do "Live Passionately"

  4. Being an American I had some dealings around the area in the past 27/28 or so years in the US embassies within SE Asia here is a brief assessment.

    US Jakarta below average

US Singapore below average to the point of being rude

US Thailand above average service for American citizens but when I lived in BKK 23 years ago it was common knowledge they had very little knowledge as to what was really going on in the Thailand, so much so, that they were buying their intelligence from the Australian embassy.

  5. Question:

There have always been doom and gloomers that I can remember.

If a crisis like 2008 happens once In a blue moon, does it mean they foresaw it.......or they were lucky?

ps: remember Nouriel Roubini's bear calls all the way up the last few years?

Or do you just remember the one that happened to be correct?

    post-120824-13601562388025_thumb.jpg

pps that chart continued up to double

No I remember Roubini and he has not as been as gllom and doom as he use to be but I have not read anything by him lately. I still beleive he, Rogers and Faber are on the right track but it does get tiring waiting to see the other shoe drop.

  6. for both of your questions ask this man, i've been following him for over 10 years.

based in hong kong and he sometimes lives in chang mai, he is always on bloomberg and cnbc, if you do a youtube search for marc faber and watch some of his video's over the years.

    http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Marc_Faber

Read his services here, this is his website, and send him a message

    http://new.gloomboom...pageSPS_ID=3000

Jim Rogers, for those that do not know, was George Soros partner when they both became billiionaires. Rogers also saw the writing on the wall and in 2011/2012 changed his primary residence from NYC to Singapore. Anyway Faber and Rogers have been talking Doom & Gloom since 2005/2006 it happened in 2008 and still no let up, they are still talking doom and gloom which I agree with but it seems that it never comes.

  10. " I could care less if it is close to the BTS as I will be buying a car and can always go out to pickup or drop off visitors from BKK, I was looking on the web at a new Ford Country I beleive it was called but too dam_n expensive (3 billion) it is very safe, alll wheel drive and very "

3 billion baht seems rather excessive for a 4x4 but I hear money is good working offshore.

LOL I have not worked offshore since 1994. As I said I reinvented myself. Jack of all trades, master of none. That Ford Country has almost exactly the same specs as my 2009 VW Touareg. it was a 4x4, It had a 3 liter TDI engine and 550nm of torque. An excellent adjustable air suspension ride. Less than 2 years ago I had a very bad bout of low blood sugar hit me, it was bad, I had taken a shot of Insulin but just got busy and forgot to eat, not sure if you no it but once hit with low blood sugar you get weak knee'ed a little jumpy, feelings of being hot. If you have insulin in your systme and have noit eate it get's worse you actually go black mentally, total blackout but function physically. I pulled out of the VW service center, and mentally lost all conscienceness, I continued to drive for a total of 6 kms until I hit a huge oak tree that totalled the Touareg. I hit, side swipped and touched a few cars, a total of 11 to be exact, on the 6km drive, Insurnace paid off everything and luckily I never touched one of the many motorcycles I paid for it, totaled the Touareg and broke my back and was in GlenEagles Hospital Singapore for 4 months. I miss that car.

  11. Ivan, I found that story I was just reading, there are more stories like this, be careful

INDONESIAN drinking holes linked to death and injury of Aussie tourists are defiantly continuing to sell dangerous alcohol laced with ''industrial grade methylated spirits''.

The Gili Trawangan venue where Perth carpenter Liam Davies consumed alcohol on New Year's Eve - then died a few days later of suspected methanol poisoning - is selling vodka containing the potentially lethal chemical.

Happy Cafe in Senggigi, Lombok where Sydney nurse Jamie Johnston consumed the traditional Balinese spirit Arak in 2011, then suffered brain and kidney damage, is serving drinks from a bottled labelled Jose Cuervo tequila containing ''significant levels of methanol''.

Independent scientific testing commissioned by News Ltd last week confirmed also that both businesses are selling alcoholic drinks labelled Malibu rum and Disaronno amaretto containing double the alcohol content as is stated on the source bottles.

Scientists said the methanol detected in the samples were consistent with ''the use of industrial grade methylated spirits''.

In the wake of News Ltd's special investigation, the government last night announced it would revise its official advice provided to Australians visiting Indonesia, and would recommend pre-bottled drinks - such as beer - were the best way to avoid methanol drinks.

And there were renewed calls for the government to take urgent action with Indonesian authorities to ensure no more lives are claimed as a result of dangerous cocktails.

Mr Davies' father travelled to Indonesia last weekend to begin searching for answers over his son's death and told News Ltd there was a ''worrying'' lack of understanding in the Southeast Asian country about methanol and how it can have fatal consequences.

''There is a general lack of awareness and that is surprising given how many people, including locals, have died and become sick,'' Tim Davies said.

In 2009, 23 people died in Lombok and the surrounding islands from methanol poisoning.

Australia's Bali Consul-General has met in recent days with Indonesian police and health officials to express concern about the increased number of methanol-related incidents. Brett Farmer said the Indonesian government was concerned how negative publicity could impact on the country's tourism trade.

News Ltd has been told by numerous Indonesian hospitality sources that methanol is added to drinks at bars and nightclubs so they can make their products go further, and consequently lead to an increased profit margin.

The country has a high alcohol tax of more than 200 per cent on some products.

Director of the Melbourne-based laboratory commissioned by News Ltd to test alcoholic samples taken from Indonesia, described the results as shocking, and said people consuming liquor like the products analysed were putting themselves in harm's way.

John Franceschini said methanol was detected at a level of 2.5 per cent in a bottle of vodka purchased from Rudy's Bar and Restaurant.

''Exposure to Methanol of any sort is not great,'' Mr Franceschini said.

''A result of 2.5 per cent is...above any acceptable levels currently being considered and is therefore potentially hazardous to anyone regularly consuming the product.''

He added that while one drink may not cause significant problems ''regular usage or binge usage could be quite dangerous at this level''.

University of Sydney Professor of Medicine Paul Haber said methanol ''can be fatal when consumed...it can cause blindness or death''.

Currently the government's travel advisory warns against methanol and urges travellers to be cautious of the chemical.

But with no way for drinkers to know if their drink actually contains methanol, a spokesman for Foreign Minister Bob Carr last night said the advice was to change.

The spokesman said drinking bottled products was the safest option.

Drinking at ''reputable places like The Westin'' was also advisable.

Meanwhile, Indonesian police have finally begun investigating the death of Liam Davies, a month after he died.

His father and mother met with local police last week and they are calling for manslaughter charges to be laid against the bar owners where their son spent New Years Eve with friends.

The Davies family and Liam's New Zealand-based aunty were establishing a charity to fund medical equipment for popular Indonesian party areas which would be used to detect methanol levels in patients' blood.

Liam was initially - and incorrectly - diagnosed with a brain aneurism by Lombok doctors.

It was not until he was airlifted to Perth that his actual medical condition was known.

Perth police are currently investigating Liam's death on behalf of the coroner.

Father Tim Davies said his wife and two other sons continued to be emotionally torn following Liam's tragic passing.

''Words can't describe the sorrow and pain, it is like a bad dream, and all because of some silly dangerous drink.''

    What is methanol?

Methanol is a poisonous liquid that is colourless and odourless. It should never be consumed. When consumed methanol can cause extreme dizziness, severe headaches and seizures. Methanol poisoning can render a person temporarily blind or cause blurred vision. The digestive system will attempt to reject methanol causing severe stomach pain and nausea. Consumption can disrupt liver and pancreatic function. Consumption can be fatal. Methanol is produced through poor distillation methods. It’s a sign of badly produced alcohol and the effects are immediate. Some medical experts say methanol is intentionally added to liquor in Indonesia because it is cheap and potent.

    A drink to die for . . .

    - Liam Davies, 19, from Perth, died in January this year after drinking a Vodka mix containing methanol from Rudy's Bar and Restaurant on Gili Trawangan.

    - Jamie Johnston, then 25 of Sydney, suffered brain damage and kidney failure from a methanol laced jug of Arak from the Happy Cafe on Lombok in September 2011.

    - Michael Denton, 29, of Perth died in Sanglah Hospital, Bali, of methanol poisoning after drinking a cocktail on a rugby trip.

    - Johan Lundin, 28, a Swedish national, died in June last year after drinking a mojito at Suma Suma bar on Gili Trawangan.

    - In 2009, 23 people died in Lombok and the surrounding islands from methanol poisoning.

    How the testing was done

News Ltd travelled to Indonesia and purchased alcohol from the bars implicated in today's investigation. The venues were not told the samples were being tested by an Australian media organisation. The samples were submitted to leading Melbourne laboratory Sharp and Howells and tested for alcohol content, ethanol content and methanol content. The company was established in 1922 and is accredited with the National Association of Testing Authorities. The tests completed by Sharp and Howells were paid for and not the result of any advertising arrangement with News Ltd.

  12. Ivan, I have lived in Jakarta for 23 years and my wife and I have gone to Bali Island several times over the years. Most of the times were too just get away for a long weekend when the 12 to 14 hour days were getting to me and the stress level was high. We normal stayed outside of Denpasar (the main city where the airport is and most call Bali) Denpasar is too many expats, conmen, the heat is extreme and to many sellers of cheap crap with small kids and sellers following expats around for change. Plus you need to be careful in some bars there, many stories recently in the press where expats are dying or becoming blind after drinking homemade alcohol sold in some bars. Those bars in Denpasar are notorious for taking advantage of tourists.

We could only stand it for a day maybe 2 and we got the hell out. Went to Ubud (about a 2 hour drive away, higher up and cooler), there is a hotel there called The Maya 4/5 star hotel, some rooms have there own private pool others do not. We also went to the Aman Resorts hotle in Central denpasar about 2 1/2 hours drive away from the main airport. Great place to stay, relax with your favorite girl and forget about work ect ect. The villas are perched on the side of hill over looking the ocen between Bali and Lombok island, truly beautiful place but not cheap but if you are an Indonesian resident or citizen you get a 50% discount on the rates.

As for staying on Bali Island personally I would choose Ubud for a few days (take a girl with you) or going for a few months you can find someone quite easily but neither Ubud or Denpasar is anything close to BKK or even Jakarta when you talk about girls.

Want more info, go to an expat Bali forum based in Denpasar it is called Balipod and check them out they can tell you what is what.

  13. that the Knox gold is gone goes without saying. recently i had an interesting discussion with the Tooth Fairy and she confirmed that Snowhite's seven dwarfs dug a tunnel, "stoled" all the gold and then rehypothecated most of it with a Nigerian bank.

with the remaining part they artificially suppress the global gold price on behalf of the Chinese central bank which will mop up secretly all available physical gold and then present the new world reserve currency fully backed by gold and panda poo. they are still looking for a fitting name and accept suggestions.

A new currency name for China to take over the world?

    Fukuwondi

  14. I am sure you have other reasons, but I would not be buying a large, expensive truck just to take visitors to and from the airport. Driving and parking here seems such a hassle. Might change my mind after moving here, but..... .

Falcon I have thought about what you said and I might go another way, do they sell these in BKK?

    1360020995199.png.CROP.rectangle3-large.png

    It's called a P45 just google P45 Topgear Youtube

  15. I meet the most interesting people in little corner bars around Sukhumvit.

I only really go out for a beer in the afternoon or early evening.

I love to watch the world go by in this area and we usually stay in soi 11.

I just mind my own business and enjoy the place for what it is.

Often there will be a farang doing the same thing and we get talking.

I have met the most interesting people like this and can spend several hours enjoying the tales that they have.

They come from all walks of life and countries and are in Thailand for many different reasons.

I am twice your age and maybe they just feel sorry for me but I have met some 100% nice people like this.

Cheap Charlies still has the same Charlie there and is a great place but it opens about 5PM and one time I had a camera bag stolen by a French man that I was talking to.

Interesting he changed his opening time, he use to open at 1 or 3pm before as I remember but it was 23 years or so ago.

  16. People shouldn't really the debate the merits or otherwise of travelling either to Thailand whilst 7 months pregnant nor a compelling want to return home once circumstances changed. People deal with grief and trauma in their own way and have different needs. Individuals choices should be respected. Doctors at both ends supported the travel of both legs.

The important issue is that mother and child are doing well.

So very true and very well said, some cannot see the forest for the trees but if some still need to dwell on this then I am not really sure where you are going, it is a dead issue with most now or at least it should be.

  17. Welcome to the 21st century i'm afraid!

Burning to a DVD is old school. I download via Bit Torrent, wgen finished download a copy on a USB drive, slip the drive in to the DVD player, watch and enjoy. If memorable I save it to a 500gb external drive or if it is really good, upload it to network drive attached to the wireless router.

  18. The Group remained well capitalised with core Tier 1, Tier 1 and total capital adequacy ratios at 12.6%, 14.3% and 18.3% respectively as at 30 September 2012. The capital adequacy

ratios were higher, due to higher retained earnings and issuance of S$1.2 billion subordinated

notes, partly offset by higher risk-weighted assets.

    http://www.uob.com.s...ase_3q_2012.pdf

note: MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) is one of the strictest, if not THE strictest, banking regulator on this planet!

When the USD started to go crazy with the Bush plan, the housing market was a bubble being created in 2005 and the writing was on the wall I started to do 2 things invest in gold and buy more SGD in small increments.

  19. What % capital does UOB Singers operate at?

Thai banks are about 16%, US and UK barely 1% apparently. You think in SHTF event little old you or me would keep access this "allocated" accounts? Really your paper certificate sounds 95% insane from my perspective, because you don't own any gold, just a piece of paper promising it to you. Do they not have gold shops in Indonesia?

Yes they have gold shops in Indonesia, they even have an official state govt. gold shop you can buy from PT. Antam I beleive just google it and it displays the gold proucts for sale up to bars of 250 oz.. But I really do not want to hold gold.

As for UOB they are by far much safer and more well off than any bank in the US or the EU, I trust them completely.
