well ive been here over 30 years most in CM never had a porblem yet but I dont have a cash problem luckily and make sure i keep to all rules but your right if i had not heard fo new rules id have as usual spent 800k baht in next week or so and gone next year thinking all is ok I did ask IO if I could go onto marriage visa she said id need to go to next desk to ask and added why you obviously have no problem with retirement visa. I did have a unusual large amount in bank letter having just sold some asset and not yet used money for another investment. I had 1.8 million but thats very unusual and she could see from my bank book I kept just above 800k for 3 months before and before that very low balance.

I suspect it will take a while to see what each IO decided or finds out the new rules.

Fortunately for me I use a marriage visa, but I know a few friends here in CM who are switching , due to lack of funds and the bad exchange rates.

Personally I have found the new IO in CM a lot better than the old one, except the lack of food stalls.

  2. The same thing happened to me

I got married in the UK . Told by the consulate that all I needed was a marriage certificate to get my marriage visa . Wrong .

In Thailand when I was applying for my marriage visa , I was told I needed it certified real .

I found the only place this could be done was in Milton Keynes , by post, and was unable to do it from Thailand as they only post to a UK address . (Cost £50)

Then the same , legalised marriage certificate then had to be legalised again my the Thai Embassy in London , and ONLY there , not Thailand (. £25) again only post to a UK address

Then once I got that done , I had to get my marriage certificate translated into Thai. Then register our marriage at the local Amphur . They will keep the marriage certificate

A bonus in this , you can get a yellow book as well as a pink ID card

You don’t need the certificate again as each year after that they will give you a certificate to prove you are married . You use this in your marriage Visa application.

This happened a few years ago , so it’s not a change but always been there , I suspect more ex pats are changing their Retired visa to a marriage visa .

In hindsight, if you have a choice , get married in Thailand .

The annoying thing of it all, the Visa company I asked for help , Gave me a bad photocopy of a form the UK government site, giving me the directions to certificate my marriage certificate, and ignored my protests explaining the directions all stated you had to have a UK address .

So I did the process myself , fortunately I was going back to the UK that year .

If you have a friend or relative in the UK , they could do it for you . But this will take time .

    I hope this helps

Myanmarese? Is that what Burmese people are called now? Never heard them called that before.

The country is called Myanmar, the only country to not recognize the new name in the UK, who still call it Burma . You will see that on the UK government sites. So I assume that’s why they are called that . Unless you are a Brit lol

There is no visa you can get based upon the intention to marry a Thai now. In the past a few honorary consulates would issue one but that ended some time ago.

The only option is to enter on a tourist visa, get married and then either do a change of visa status at immigration or go to a nearby embassy or consulate to get a non-o visa.

Cheers for that . I got the 90 day visa and then got a marriage voucher as. I would recommend this, 30 days is not enough time to get a marriage visa, as you never know what can happen.

if anyone is going to get married ,I would advise to get married in Thailand .ihad a hell of a time getting my uk marriage certificate “certified” the UK procedure is a pain . The marriage certificate has to ,only go,to Milton Keynes to be certified then send to Thsi embassy in London, no where else  This process will cost about £80. Then get them translated

you must have a Uk address to do this as well

if you get a Thai marriage certificate it’s a lot easier

    Just info for others

  5. My advice is to get your marriage visa . It’s s pain the first time but it’s a lot easier, all you have to do when you get one is go to Chiang Mai immigration every 90 days

I wondered how you got your visa , with intention to marry, I was told you can only get them outside Thailand , and in the UK you can’t get them any more , as I asked the Thai consulate in Cardiff

who should only give me a 90 visa , to get my marriage visa

As a non UK national, if I were visiting the UK and had an accident like this and had no insurance what would happen?

As an ex police man, You would be prosecuted for no insurance, and your car would be seized .  The owner of the vehicle, would also be prosecuted for permitting you to drive the vehicle with no insurance.

In the UK, the person is insured to drive, not the vehicle. Normally insured to drive a specific vehicle, unless your policy states otherwise.

  7. There should be a mandatory third-party liability insurance in Thailand. That would save all these situations. But collecting brown envelopes is surely more fun, than getting a decent legislation under way.

I agree , but not much point, if the Police do not even enforce the current , non insured drivers . It is mandatory to have insurance . So no point really
No point having a law if it’s not enforced

The OP says "If riding legally in Thailand you will be covered", she wasn't riding legally.

You dont hear of any stories were legally licensed riders have there insurance knocked back because they are legal.

I also said she was refused cover because he did not have entitlement to ride a motorbike.

Which is sensible, if someone has never been on a scooter or bike, there is a good chance of an accident.

If the case was true, then someone without a car licence could also rent a car , same principle.

A load of misinformation posts on this thread, no wonder some people don't bother to insure, maybe they believe the same thing.

If riding legally in Thailand you will be covered on your travel insurance, assuming it covers the cc of the bike, only bozos don't read the small print.

Quick search in the internet shows the answer ( From UK perspective)

Incorrect, there was an example in this site, were a nurse , from the UK, was involved in an accident and had head injuries, Her insurance company would not cover her. for two reasons, No helmet, and she did not have entitlement to ride a motorbike.

Yes, which is fair enough if you have no experience or maybe no bike license. However, as a motorbike is a Europe-wide recognised form of transport, both for work commutes and pleasure trips this has for a long time been considered (by me) a sneaky get-out-of-paying small-print ploy by most insurance companies.

They said, if they based policy on geo-location then ANY travel within Thailand would be classed as a dangerous sport!!!!  :shock1::cheesy:   Cars, buses, bikes.... Hell, even crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing (yes, they do have them in Thailand - but the vehicles ignore them!) is a game of chicken!!

Thats not true, if you do not have the entitlement to ride a motorcycle, you can't ride a bike. Including europe (EU) The UK driving licence is an EU compliment and visa versa. I talk from knowledge, was a Police traffic officer for many years

Most UK travel insurance excludes claiming if riding a motorcycle.

    Comes under dangerous sports.

Err no, If you look at the travel insurance policy, the dangerous sports do not include motorcycles.

The problem with travel insurance and motorcycles, if you are from there UK ( and other countries I assume) , you have to have a motorcycle licence entitlement on your driving licence, from your home country, to be covered by travel insurance.

Because Thai companies are happy to hire you a bike to you, is immaterial. They just want your money

So people get in the smelly stuff, for two main reasons when riding a motorbike, 1) they do not have the entitlement to ride that motorbike, on their driving licence  2 ) If their home country states you must must wear a helmet when riding a bike, ( As in the UK)  you will not be covered by insurance if you do not wear a helmet. Its in the small print .

There have been a few stories on the site that have highlighted this problem.

  13. Spot On, Great advice

Ok Tassie....no Paranoia here mate. smile.png

But you biggrin.png have a low post count & there are trolls everywhere & so (it seems) I made an incorrect presumption, about your situation. smile.png

She does seem to be a bit dodgy, & what she says is over complicated. Be careful.

As for the Max guy....alarm bells are ringing, & deep down I think you do know he's a wrong 'un.

If you do break with her, then change all your passwords, & make sure you exit from her on good terms.

There are plenty of decent, kind & trustworthy ladies in thailand.

    Good luck. smile.png

  14. Trust is earned, she has done nothing to earn your trust.

If anything she has earned your suspicion, I doubt she would be as understanding if she came to your house and saw womens clothes in your wardrobe.

.....FURY: WHY DON'T YOU TRUST ME!!!!???? I CAN'T BE WITH A MAN WHO DOESN'T TRUST ME!!!!

Says it all. It won't get better if you get married.

IMO, whether you stay together or not, do NOT get married, and why the frack did you agree to have a baby with someone you barely know? If she is pregnant you'd better hope for a miscarriage, or at the least have a paternity test.

If you do stay together, be prepared to leave when the demands for money start or you'll, IMO, be a pauper before you know it.

Unfortunately you are far from the only farang to let his little head lead him.

In the psycho world of wisdom . The term WHY DON'T YOU TRUST ME!!!!???? I CAN'T BE WITH A MAN WHO DOESN'T TRUST ME!!!!

This is echoed in reverse meaning " You shouldn't trust me as I cannot be trusted to be with just 1 person."

When they refer to Trust. This often means they are already guilty .

  15. The truth is, there are a lot of unanswered questions, which, are easy to answer.

Why is she not answering them? Its easy enough to show you a marriage certificate, to see a death certificate. £90 a week, does not seem right, see a link as to the UK pension rates, (http://www.which.co.uk/money/retirement/guides/state-pension-explained/widows-pension-and-bereavement-allowance/ )

If you gut is saying there is something wrong, go with your gut, if she refuses or declines to answer your , reasonable;e and simple requests, well, how can you start a relationship with someone who hides things from you, goodness know what else she hides from you. Blowing her top, when you ask pointed questions, is also a huge warning sign.

It's not worth it Tassieman, it makes no difference how much she says she owns, its what you see with your eyes and hear with your ears. She has other mens clothes there, chances are there is another man, she says she has money, but the house is not fully furnished. Proof is needed, and you have the proof in what she does not say.

My advice, say thank you, and go, find someone who you trust, and are not worried about, if you have so many questions, and she will not answer, and you have to resort to asking on the forum, well , you already know what you have to do, and the replies have confirmed that.

You have worked hard for your money and for your future, live it with someone how cares for you, not your cash.

I am getting married to a Thai lady, and asked her to sign a prenuptual, she said yes without a bat of an eyelid.

    Good luck
