  1. The British are certainly NOT a race. The UK is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural societies. The dictionary definition is completely off the mark. The British stopped being a race in about 1950 when the first waves of Commonwealth immigrants arrived.

The British stopped being a race in 793 when the Vikings pitched up at Lindisfarne.[/

You have a point, but it depends on how far you want to go back, according to DNA we are all Africans and come from one source .

  2. Contrary to several above comments, we have just had our busiest back to back months in 3yrs.

April and may have been great for us even including at least 6 days last month where we had no customers.

The traditional february surge however was very noticeable, we were down maybe 40% on the previous february and that was due to other countries clamping down on the political situation.

But then all that happened was that they waited a month or so to come back, so Songran was heaving more than ever.

I am never complacent about day to day business but wherever they come from we seem to drop lucky.

....ooh, gotta go another 4000bt just walked in!

    Where are you based ?

  3. Well, I am not in the tourism business but neither do I fill a barstool (ha! Not allowed out alone at night), so from observations here in Chiang Mai there is no way around facing that tourism is down noticibily.

Just finished reading "Thaksin", 2nd Edition (2009) by Pasuk Phongpaichit and Chris Baker and want to recommend it for reading. I believe it to present a balanced and well researched basis for understanding the hope of the majority populace and the failings of the era government. Toward the end of the book, I had to check the calendar as it was déjà vu, all over again. I take the time to make the recommendation because it should well give folks pause to reflect on where Thailand has been and where it continues to go. As some might observe, things will again repeat unless there is a serious change in the culture. Admittedly, I can hope, but will not hold my breadth. My poor benighted Thailand, so rich in culture, so little real potential realized to date.

Thanks will get the book mad get an idea about the man.

  4. From the UK the government has advised tourists not to visit certain parts Thailand , the south etc. I don't know we're your business is but that might have some effect . Depending on who you mainly cater for, the countries I mean, have a look at the government sites and see what advice they are giving.

If the government say not to go, then travel insurance company's May not cover them.

  5. Your of course right, CharlieH and there is a pinned topic about "Will in Thailand" right here in this forum..

But from lot of post, most guys writing here are more concerned about their Thai wifes access to their assets during lifetime than after death....

But the main points to think about are

    - do you want your Thai wife to have access to all your assets, also back home?

    - did you register your marriage not only in Thailand, but also with your home country (through Embassy mainly)?

    - did you create a will for both Thailand and your home country?

    - did you leave clear instructions for your wife about who to approach and how in case of your death, make sure she knows which forms to gather where and how to fill them out and who to send them to - or did you (even better) prepare all those forms for your wife?

The important thing is to educate your wife about these procedures, since a lot of them (like state pension, the need for documents etc.) just do not exist in Thailand (or only for certain groups like government workers) and thus, your wife can not know about them, if you don't teach her / prepare her for that situation.

I asked about this , you can only have one will, you can't have two wills , if you do the newest one ,moots the older one. I got legal advice , both in the UK and in Thailand, and I can confirm you will is world wide regardless of where you live or where your assets are. So then you make a will, be aware of that .

  6. Good day

I will be moving to Hang Dong , Chiang Mai , I have no date as yet but it is going to happen.

I won't be shipping all my furniture or white goods etc, as these can be bought in Chiang Mai. It will be my personal stuff and other times that are sentimental and cheaper over in the UK.

The question is simple, does anyone know of a reliable company I can use ( I live in the Midlands ) to do this, and an idea of the price. ( I know it depends on how much, etc etc, but a ball park figure would be nice so I have an idea of costings.

I have been give a few tips, have it in your wives Thai name, Less change of it being looked at by Thai customs, don't buy took many new items so it looks like you will be selling them etc.

    Thank in advance

  8. Summary

Still current at: 14 May 2014

    Updated: 13 May 2014

Latest update: Summary - the main protest site is now at Ratchadamnoen Avenue

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla on the Thai-Malaysia border. On 10 April 2014 the Australian authorities indicated that extremists may be planning to target westerners in the southern border provinces. See Terrorism

The FCO advise against all travel to the Preah Vihear (Khaoi Pra Viharn in Thai) temple area and the Ta Krabey/Ta Moan temple area located on the Thai-Cambodian border due to the presence of troops in the area and the risk of outbreaks of fighting. See Cambodian border

On 5 May an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck northern Thailand close to Chiang Rai causing some damage to buildings and roads.

There is a high threat of terrorism. See Terrorism

Political demonstrations continue in and around Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand. Some of these have been violent, including the use of firearms and grenades, and there have been casualties and deaths. The situation is unpredictable and further protests are expected. You should avoid protest sites.

Protest action in central Bangkok since January 2014 has caused significant disruption to roads in affected areas, with knock-on effects across the city. The main protest site is at Ratchadamnoen Avenue with a smaller protest site at the government complex at Chaeng Watthana. There are also sporadic rallies to government offices and private companies.

There have been indiscriminate attacks involving weapons and explosives at protest sites and at protest marches. Attacks have taken place during the daytime and at night.

You should take extra care and avoid all protests, political gatherings, demonstrations and marches. Monitor local news and social media for developments. See Political situation

Tourist’s Friend Centres, which provide information for tourists, are located at the Sport Authority of Thailand in the Bangkapi district of Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, four BTS Skytrain stations (Siam, Phya Thai, Ekkamai and Wong Wian Yai) and Hua Lampong MRT station. You can also contact the Tourist’s Friend Centre by telephone on +66 (0)2 314 1212 (in English – 24 hours).

The majority of road traffic accidents in Thailand involve motorcycles, but accidents involving other vehicles including cars, coaches and mini-buses also occur. See Road travel

By law you must carry your passport with you at all times. Tourists have been arrested because they were unable to produce their passport. See Local laws and customs

Penalties for possession, distribution or manufacture of drugs are severe and can include the death penalty. See Local laws and customs

Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel.

Over 800,000 British nationals visit Thailand every year. Most visits are trouble-free, but incidents of crime (sometimes violent) can affect visitors. See Crime

  9. My Thai wife always buys the most expensive rice now that she's married to a falang...........Jasmine Homale and to be honest, I find it the most tasteless rice there is. A lot of my dislike to it is that she always puts too much water and it ends up being a [tasteless] sticky goo that 20% is left stuck to the rice cooker pot.

I'm sure a lot of her preference for it is the fact that her father grows the famous Jasmine rice on his farm in Issan and he sells his whole crop to the buyers, then for the family he buys the cheapest broken rice.

I was raised in a rice culture [Hawaii] and we used Calrose, a California grown version of a Japanese rice that has some texture and decent flavor and then there is Basmati rice that actually does have some flavor and texture. Jasmine to me is totally overrated.

I also like some of the many colored rices that are grown..............black, brown and red with a lot more texture than the mushy white rice.

Thanks for listening to my 'Thai Rice Rant'..............

Cook it yourself, get a rice cooker , a cup or any measure of rice with exactly the same amount of water . Done

  10. I believe the shit may well hit the fan over this incident and the inevitable others which will follow.

I hope she's already notified the Russian Embassy about this as I believe she was singled out for being a Russian. If she wasn't a russian it wouldn't have happened.

Note to Mariia when you read this - please contact your Embassy to make an official complaint about this incident.

So you are saying that they refused her entry because she was Russian and not because she was in violation of numerous laws?

Note to Maria when you read this - please follow the rules.

That's the point, the rules are enforced as one sees fit, plus they are informally changed every so often.

A joke immigration occurrence in a joke country...shocking news.

Rules are rules , if you decide to ignore them, prepare to pay the price .

If they decide to enforce if it not, it's still the rules .

The only joke is expecting to get away with it all the time .

You will find , in any country , immigration, customs or police, have discretion , but the rules are the same , people get annoyed when they don't use discretion , but the rules have not changed , their discretion has just changed.

It's simple , have the correct documentation. Nothing to worry about then.

  11. Did she not miss the point! She had no proper visa and was on numerous visa runs. You takes a gamble, you makes your choice,

She had no money to support herself and no place to stay with no money. These are all reasons to refuse entry.

I agree that the attitude of the officers ( according to her) was wrong, but we don't know what her attitude was to them.

They were doing their job, and from her account, for the right reasons .

    Sorry

  12.  Not much happening try to get an Aus tourist visa for her, shes got no money in her account though and wants me to put 100,000 to 200,000baht in her account.  She says she'll pay me back but im reluctant to do it.

Other than that just skyping most nights and email.         I miss Thailand mak though, and wish I was there with her nearly every day.

Interesting. Where has all the money gone, she wants 100,000 or 200,000 Bht , what's she spending it on!!!!!!!! Shit she is a grabber. A decent Thai lady would never ask for that amount of cash . She is living in Thailand ???? Not another country ????? If she wants that amount .

If she has no money now, and you have given her money already , and she now has no money, even if it was meant for someone else, any sensible person would keep some , to live on , if she's that broke.

So how the hell is she going to pay you back ? I wouldn't lend that type of money to someone that money in the UK or Auz , as I would be worried they could not pay me back, and they would earn more , never mind someone in Thailand who has no way of paying .

If you give her money , consider it gone like the rest you have sent .

Your real worry is the amount she is asking for, alarm bells should be ringing , my man , huge big ones , and any Thai lady who asks for that amount of money bells should ring. If she says she needs it to live, and you believe her,,,,,, well it shows how much you understand Thailand and their life.

If she gets a visa to go to Auz, is it a work Visa ?? Doubt it, so she can't pay you back when ( or more like if) she comes over.

You buy the tickets , you can get a refund, and if you send her the money , I would guess she would need more .

You are now , a money cow, she will have a lot of sick buffaloes soon.

  13. Do you have anything to substantiate your post. Some more info would help,

Nobody gets a visa at a border (other than those that can get a 15 day VOA) you must be writing about visa exempt entries.

Are they letting those with visas to cross and return for new entries.

Perhaps there is a problem on the other side of the border so they are not allowing people to depart.

I was looking at an travel site and looking at visa runs. There was a big notice saying that visa runs are no longer allowed .

    Here is one site. http://www.chiangmaivisarun.com/chiang-mai-mae-sai-by-minibus/

  14. A Sweeping statement. Just about everyone , err no . I don't .

Not everyone on this forum think Thais are corrupt, lazy blah blah . I don't and this forum seems to be used to vent. If you want positive things about Thailand and Thais well look elsewhere .

If You want to look at doom and the world being corrupt , You look at the daily papers, that's what they peddle . I don't.

If you want a Thai woman who is money orientated and a greater chance to scam you, go to a go go bar , most will but not all. Want a decent Thai woman look in decent Thailand .

Yep there are bad women there too, but the same as anywhere in ant country.

I want to know if there is anything she can do to get divorce under thai law, without me having to pay bribe to husband.

Yeah, Thai law makes no such restriction. She's taking you for 30K buddy. Don't believe us! Talk to a Thai attorney. Then shake her off. You're being scammed. Hope you listen to us.

Mate he's been told that so many times. He won't he's holding on to this fantasy and will only look at what he wants or agrees with
