5,000 US$ a month isnt a lot for a very senior director at a large 5* Hotel, regardless of race or country. 

Thats about the same as a Garbage man makes in the states, With overtime you could earn that amount working at Mcdonalds as a Team Leader.

Its always easy to look at other peoples jobs and come to the conclusion that they dont do much for their money, without understanding the responsibility, time and dedication that a position at that level requires.

Now I agree Patong is a terrible place but I went there last week and had a great time. I went to Tiger Club and it was pumping. Everyone had fun, countless not unattractive women danced with me and everyone had a jolly time.

Normally I hate the place but this time was different, mainly because I had good company. I still avoid Banana like the plague but hear Safari is quite good. I didn't leave Bangla till 3.30am and everything seemed very open, which is a good sign for partygoers and business alike.

ok so, we are coming to thailand finally, leaving next week, we plan to travel around the islands of phuket  samet samui lanta and perhaps some other places if we manage

I know these are popular destinations and we are gonna be there in high season..but it seems to me quite hard to find budget  (or reasonably budget) accomodation on the net!! ??

the thing is, I don't really like to book a place without smellig it especially if my choices are all expensive

so my question is:

is it really a bad idea to come out, at this time,  WITHOUT reservations?

the last time i was in thailand it was not high season and i had absolutely no problem...should add, that i was also on my own, now we have two kids along so perhaps the roughest accomodations that seemed romantic then would be unfit today..

can anyone chip in on this?

will i find myself paying a lot of money because everything's booked?

any suggestions?

You will have no problem in Phuket ! Stay at a cheap place the first night and look the next a.m. will find many of places for 800-1000 baht a night

i have all my retirement money locked up in mutual funds. I tried stock picking for years and lost ever year, even in the high tech bonanza years of 1997-99!

anyhow, i've been doing pretty well on funds this year, up about 15% on the year overall. my best performers were RYPRX ROYCE PREMIER FUND (most US stocks) 15% YTD and FSENX FIDELITY SELECT ENERGY 48% YTD. i aslo have some internation stocks and latin america which are doing ok.

but now i'm a bit nervous. i'm wondering if i should cash out some of the funds and sit on cash or something very low risk for a while.

yeah she was ! just kidding . you want a nicer beach go to kata or karon , much nicer not as many resturaunts but the beaches are much better . staying at the holiday wouldnt be bad but 2 blocks and youre at bangla rd (nitelife). i love it !
