  1. Sheryl, although the basis of your advice is sound, you seem a little confused about fish sauce and "nam prick" and fermented fish paste as well as the many forms of Som Tam.

Transmission is from raw fish, but I understand that some kinds of fluke are transmitted also from consumption water plants which form a common accompaniment to many Thai dishes.

Self diagnois and over the counter treatment is NOT recommended as the treatment takes a long time and often different drugs; Egaten (Triclabendazole) and Praziquantel are allegedly the most effective.

I am well aware of the difference between fish sauce and fish paste.

Both can transmit liver fluke. Though in the case of fish sauce, only if homemade. Nowadays most people use bottled.

As to types of Som Tam, I find that definitions vary in different parts of the country. In many places, including where I live, "som tham thai" includes raw crab. Raw crab is as much a risk as raw fish.

I think you need to take a closer look at your menu and recipes.i think you're confusing fish sauce with pla-ra and nam prik.

BTW apparently if you freeze any potentially contaminated food for a period of time the parasite will die.

Son Tam Thai should not contain those crabs - it is called Thai because it is the Thai version of the Laos / Issan dish and can contains seafood but not the freshwater stuff.Of course there is no guarantee that every somtam lady is aware of this definition.

However as most somtams are made in the same mortar, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that the parasite can survive the pummelling and continue on its cycle.

  2. Easy solution ban them, or make people pay for them if they want a plastic bag

If you had done any research before you posted, you'd have found that the issue is far more complicated than that. Quite apoart from the Thai love of, nay, obsession with packaging, there is the purely no practical problem of getting your stuff home. With food, many goods are chilled or frozen and paper, itself a problematic material, is unsuitable.

This is largely thge responsibility of the chain stores we now shop at who are often some distance from where we live, and the way goods are sold requires more packaging.

Many countries have tried to address this problem and so far none has come up with a satisfactory universal answer. However in the end it isn't the customer, it's the company that needs to change.

  3. Try to eat Vitamin C 1000 mg per day. It helped me for something other.

็Haha, no, it did not "help" you with anything, other than giving you yellow/orange expensive piss.

No scientific study has ever shown that Vitamin C "cures" anything, least of which the common cold or flu. It's a farang folk belief, no different than Thais making offering to those hindu god statues in parking lots.

another one brainwashed like 99% of the people...

vitamin C is not patentable = nobody wants to pay millions in clinical trials = no money to be made to be sold exclusivly...

you can take up to 9-10 grams of vitamin C per day

hopital grade sick people should get by IV up to 100 GRAMS per day

Sorry but vit C is myth. As for money.....have you seen how much it sells for in tablet form. Not bad for something you could just as easily get by eating FOOD.

  5. From the article above.....

What's the harm, one might ask. Well, in this case, Kefir is not being promoted simply as a nutritious food (which it might very well be), like cheese or yogurt. Purveyors are making health claims about this product. Some patients suffering from symptoms like chronic abdominal pain, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, nausea, fatigue, colon cancer, herpes, and ADHD are listening in, and buying it. This can cause unsafe delays in actually working up, diagnosing, and treating potentially dangerous illnesses. It can also foster a false sense of security in a patient who believes he is adequately protecting himself or others from the effects of a serious infection when in fact it isn't true.

In summary, there is no reliable evidence that Kefir is anything more than a (moderately disgusting) food. The patient with the Kefir turned out to have a Helicobacter pylori infection which I treated with antibiotics and an acid reducing medication.

  6. Kefir grains are of abslutely no value whastsoever - detox is a myth. Any benefits barren purely psychological and temporary.

Save time and money and eat a balanced diet.

Absolute nonsense. There's untold benefits to drinking kefir.

Balanced diet"?? ...give us a break. That concept is meaningless. It's a joke that goes back decades.

Sorry but you are quite deluded...obsessive even?

You do realise that thecsortbof "probiotic" bacteria that are so popular are basically just a constituent of cow poo?

  7. I have 2 main criticisms of the OP article.

Firstly I think it over-estimates the role of Buddhism in politics. I think self interest especially of the old guard ruling elite is way more important.

Secondly I think that although one would largely concur with the assessment of the Thaksin family and that side oif the coin, I think it grossly underestimates the negative aspects of the opposition. To me it looks very much like a case of out of the rather warm frying pan into a VERY hot fire.

I think the effects of an unelected government on Thailand both home and abroad will be dire. .....both in terms of the economy and civil rights....not forgetting the role of the west, Korea and Japan.

  8. So how's about this? No coup.....but the army takes over and forces Yingluck to resig but voluntarily.., so no coup; just a board of the people's something or other takes over until an election can be held where the Democrats stand a chance of at least forming a coalition government with some fringe loonie parties. ...... But not a coup....definitely not a coup...,that's right out....the army said so....

  9. Whatever your political leanings or preferences may be regarding Thai politics the fact remains that a regional minority allied to the old guard ruling elite are trying to depose an elected government, and put themselves back in power after failing to win an election themselves since the 1990s.

It isn't a democratic action and anyone who thinks it is a step towards a democratic Thailand is simply deluding themselves.

  10. Is it the time of year? This thread is just chocabloc full of nonsense....... As far as I can see it wasn't a 4wd, it was one of those holiday rental things that look like a Jeep.

Most of the posts seem to demonstrate 2 things how ignot PPP tant then poster is and how little they know about driving.

Holiday rental vehicles don't usually have the national flag of the driver emblazoned on their sides. Please check all available info before responding

What an utterly facile comment.....words fail me!
