  1. You can even do it by bicycle, There is a Dutch company where you can book individual bicycle trips through SE Asia, the package consists of plane ticket+transport for the bicycle, and a booklet with all the information about which roads to follow and where to stop for the night. Their most grueling option might be the one called "The great challenge" - going from Bangkok to Singapore by bicycle in 6 weeks.

  2. Person applying for the firearm licence must be employed and receive income. Also he/she must be for at least 6 months on the house registration in the district where he/she is applying for the licence.

  3. Think I am qualified to post here....have been living in Khao Lak since 2000. The weather in July is hit and miss, there might not be a single drop of rain, or it might start raining over and over again every day, or anything in between these two extremes.

The big draw in Khao Lak besides the beaches and diving, is enjoying the natural scenery surrounding it. There are lots of waterfalls in the rain forest right behind the coastal strip, off the beaten track bays, and a not so well known island very close to the mainland. Rent a motorcycle or a car. I could recommend Chong Fah waterfall, Pakkarang Cape, White Sand (AO Thong) Beach, Sairung waterfall, Poseidon Beach, Lampi waterfall, and the island of Koh Kaw Khao.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars, especially at Nang Thong Beach and at Bang Niang Beach, where the beach is better and more suitable for long walks.

Tourism in Khao Lak is mainly a matter of married couples and families, people at least over 30 dominate the scene, though there are also young people around, some of whom really dig it.

  4. Highly doubt if the experience is shared by farangs who are in a long time relationship with a Thai lady and go all sorts of places with her. It might make a difference how the lady is dressed, and if you speak Thai or English with her.

  5. What is the juristic construction to start with? Do the houses on the estate belong for 100% to individual owners, or is it a condominium construction? Legally, if a condominium has say 50 units, you as an individual owner own 2% of the whole, but you have the sole right to use your unit. Mostly units in a condominium are apartments, but they can also be free standing houses with a bit of land around them.

  6. One thing I don't understand.....first he says he is happily working at the farm, cleaning away pig shit early in the morning, but later he says he is doing absolutely nothing all day, just watching DVD's on the computer. When did he stop working, and why? Also at one point his wife complains that he doesn't want to work, and that he won't be able to stay.

Sure, bottles of Chang all over the movie. But only once his wife talks about him drinking alcohol, when they are together in Pattaya.

So also when you understand both Thai and English, after seeing it you are wondering what has been left unsaid, and what has been possibly made up.

  7. I was 0.18. Then after being handcuffed for 20 minutes or so, they told me to try again. That time it came back higher:blink:

Sure, breathalyzing is not reliable, just rinsing your mouth with Pernod will result in a higher reading than drinking 3 glasses. I believe generally in western countries this method is not used anymore, instead of that they probably use a blood test.
  8. does anyone know the fine if you insist you want to stand your ground and go to court, i heard a 1000 baht, no loss of licence and a slap on the but on the way out, i'd be interested if anyone has taken the court route:coffee1:

Did you not read my post? There is no court and its not 1000B it's 2500B. You just pay a fine during office hours....
Paangjang, you could have refused to pay the fine, and then you would have gone to court. Did they give you a receipt for the fine? Anyway thanks for sharing your story, it might have convinced a few people not to drive after drinking.
  9. Last year Rentokill Phuket charged me 4280 Baht for fogging my 1 rai compound, they also put pest control stuff into about 10 septic tanks. I am in Khao Lak, it might cost a bit less in Phuket.

True that in the countryside, like up in the Isaan, it is not unusual for the ampurs (municipalities) to go around fogging for free.

  10. I never drive after having been drinking, but I have driven lots of times in the morning after having generously imbibed the night before, and then there is still alcohol in your blood of course, and likely also on your breath. Maybe the BIB should set up morning checkpoints to broaden their target group.

  11. Since at least when I settled in Khao Lak 13 years ago, the high water line has been moving further and further inland. Beachfront land owners build walls, but the water then comes in from the side, or finds its way under the wall, washing away the sand, so that in the end the wall is standing alone on the beach for some time before inevitably collapsing. The only system that works is a not too steeply sloping dike made of rocks or concrete.

  12. the Cambodians drive like lunatics...granted it could be argued that the Thais do too, but it's a different sort of lunacy and if you are not in tune with it, you're very likely to have an accident.

Sheryl, I have done a lot of mileage in Thailand and I thought I was used to everything, you make me curious, please explain me in what way Cambodians drive differently than Thais? I am sure you have a few nice stories to tell, thanks for your time.
  13. OP,

Thanks for enriching my vocabulary with the expression "jonesing". Guess I won't use it often though, doubt if even native speakers who are not North American will understand it.

Oh...almost all restaurants have mango shake, watermelon shake and so on the menu, it is chopped up fresh fruit having done its swing in the mixer with crushed ice. I always request not to add sugar.
