Good point. I was hoping it may not be an issue for a minor, but letting the system "know" might mean he will have to make a choice when he turns 18...

To be honest, this is partly my intention. ie. whenever he visits Thailand, he'll be coming back in 30 days! Not because I think they'll strip him of his citizenship just like that, but just because he doesn't have a Thai passport.

And of course it will be impossible for him to get one while he is in Thailand to use on the next trip

It is not illegal to borrow 800k or less to meet the requirements for the visa.  Agents can help if you're over 50  .  Not saying it's the only way but a lot of pensioners here can not afford the requirements.

True but it is illegal to have it in the bank for less than the three months' "seasoning" and then claim you comply with the extension regulations

Did it before in Ayutthaya, same thing over there, they checked the computer for registation, but in Ayutthaya i told the hotel owner to do so and informed him that next day i will go to extend my visa at immigration.

Sounds like Immigration offices in the sticks just make things up so as to make your life difficult whereas in Bangkok they have a more solid grasp of reality

The dates during which you can go out, re-enter, and get another year of Permission To Stay are:

    - the Date of Issue for the visa, and

    - the Enter Before date of the visa (which is a year minus one day from the Date of Issue).

Wrong. He gets a 12-month extension every time he enters during his first year, including the 22 October 2017. I speak from personal experience. After 23 October 2017 he needs a further re-entry permit every time he wants to leave and re-enter for the next 12 months. Then he applies for his extension

As ubonjoe says, it's entirely dependent on what your embassy demands in order to give you the letter. Some embassies say little more than "lemonjelly told us ...". Theoretically you could get locked up by your home country for making a false statement to your embassy - except the sole proof that you did so is locked in the basement of some Thai immigration office

  6. If it were an O-A, if you enter just before the end of the first year they will give you another year, not another 90 days. However the multiple-entry lasts only for the first year, so you have to then get, separately, from an Immigration office not on arrival, a multiple entry permit for the second year. At the end of the second year you then apply for an extension and a further multiple re-entry permit. Not sure if you can extend "family reason" visas

  7. I've noticed a jump of about 50% in the price of sliced pineapple etc. bought on the street. However I imagine it's easier to quote in multiples of 5 baht for the vendors. I doubt the cost of the raw materials has gone up that much, but the cost to the vendor of surviving generally has certainly gone up. I try not to take a taxi at any time (death traps on wheels, one step up from a tuk-tuk IMO) but I've been amazed at the longevity of the 35 baht flagfall

For the frugal American who wants to stay in the good ol' US of A, there's this recent article http://www.marketwatch.com/story/5-cool-places-in-america-you-can-live-well-on-less-than-40000-a-year-2016-10-05
