  1. As for me,i have vocab of a bit less than 2500 words(i write down every word in my notebook).I can watch movies/news/talk shows and understand about 70-80%.No doubt that with 5000+ words i would understand majority of what is spoken.Of course speaking and listening/understand isn't the same but nonetheless 5000 words(with proper tones) would take you very far

How can you know how many words you know in a language ?; Writing down every word you know and understanding 70-80% of what is said in movies is very good already, better than me : now I look TV ( television, not thaivisa biggrin.png ), I have some vocabulary ( how many words, I don't know ) , but they speak a little bit too fast for me ; I must train, but in every day life I can have good conversation with people , who understand me most of the time

When i started learning i've downloaded pdf. file called 5000 most frequent words(i think it's Chulalongkorn Uni. study, you can find it on google) and i used thai-language.com to translate words and which tone it is used.Sometimes when i read thai e-book i also write down word that i don't understand.

I try to learn 20 words a day and then repeat it every day and through the day.Every day i learn new words and repeat previous ones.It takes time to be able to remember all words though. But after learning tone rules and practicing it by reading thai had become so easier

  2. The knowledge of the words deriving from the 3000 most frequent English word families and the 5000 most frequent words provides a comprehension of 95% of word use,[11] and knowledge of 5000 word families is necessary for 99.9% word coverage.[citation needed]

This is so true.I'll quote something that i've found on google which is very interesting

"There is a certain point of diminishing returns when you learn a language. When you know 18,000 words, learning 2000 more words is not a great leap as it was when you went from 0 to 2000 words, even though the difficulty is about the same. That's how some polyglots learn: you can do a lot with 2000 words, and instead of learning 20,000 words of one language, you can learn 2000 words of ten languages, or 5000 words of four languages. "

  3. Just bought new HP Envy 700 340d.

    I7,8GB memory,2TB disk,GeForceGTX745 4GB.

    3 years on site warranty

    added SSD kingston 240GB

    total:38200b

    Works like a rocket,no noise

Why bother to build one PC for my gaming purpose with such a beast on the market and 3 years on site warranty.

Anyhow curious to see HP techs coming to my condo????(hope I will not need them hum)

    I'm sorry but that's a huge mistake.Just to be clear here,you payed 38,000 baht for that pc?wow

i7 is a great cpu but as always pre-made pc's gpu(what's most important for gaming) is terrible. You could have made 3x times better pc with the same amount of money. As for warranty, even if you make your own pc,the parts that you would buy can easily surpass 5+ years. Something like i7 4790(for gaming i7 is really not that important, you can even go for i5 4690 which is 3000baht cheaper) + r9 290x or gtx 780 would give you 3x times better performance.I'm talking here about the difference in playing on 25fps vs 60-70 stable.BF4 gtx 780 runs at 70-80fps while gtx750 gets about 30-35.So gtx 745 would be about 25-30.

Also,4gb in gtx 745 is waste of vram imho.

  4. 8 months have passed since the game was released for consoles. Don't know why they still didn't release it for pc..

I'm sure they can sell at least 4 million copies on pc in first few months, also with mods game would sell for next 4+ years(just like gta 4).

  5. There is no gta 5 for ps4/xb1/pc.At least not for now.

And yes if you buy game online it's yours forever and you can install/delete it as many times you wish

  6. It was a 4th or 5th floor,im not sure,it's the floor that sells dvd's/movies/games/consoles. Price was 1800baht,bf4 deluxe edition which contains china rising dlc.

Thanks, I will check it out when coming home from work, will have to visit JIB for a new D.T. PC anyway.

JIB is great,i have just built pc there a month ago

What i meant was if you use for other things like video editing, heavy programming, heavy photoshop, rendering, streaming and stuff like that then i7 will help you.But if you do other(basic) things like watch movies, play games, basic editing/photoshop then you will not notice difference between i5 and i7.

Yes you are right, but if I buy the i7 4770 I think my system will be more future proof and it's only app 3000 baht more and should last for +5 years.

I am more concerned about the grafics card, the new Nvidia Haswell looks promising with the very low power cons. but so far they have only released a 150$ very basic one but from what I read on the i-net there are much more to come but when?

Note that i7 has also 4 cores(like i5) but with hyperethreading and this feature is not used by games yet.Maybe it should be more futureproof, but if you have to choose between better cpu vs gpu it's always better to go with better gpu because that will give you more fps in games:).

Also i think you meant Nvidia Maxwell(haswell is intel's cpu).I think it's good thing to wait that and get something like gtx860.Reason is that it's gonna be new architecture,so gtx860 SHOULD be powerful as gtx 780(or more). But if you can't wait, current nvidia 7xx series is also great.I've got gtx760 and i max out all games at 1080p so it definitely still has decent power for next gen.

Are you budilding a gaming only pc?

You could get i5 4670k and r9 280x. Also get 8gb and upgrade later.BF4 64player is using about 4.5 gb ram for me so 8gb is plenty enough for now and by the time you'll need more than 8gb ddr4 will come out.(if you're doing video editing etc. then get 16gb now).Get a sound card only if you're into some sound pro editing etc(or even pro gamer),for normal gaming usage mainboard sound is enough.

    The most important thing,that i would do,is buy i5 4670k + r9 280x/gtx 770 rather than i7 + 270x.

    Thanks for you inputs.

No my PC is used for many things, watch a lot of HD movies on my Dell U2713HM and listen to/watch music. I intend to buy some good speakers later on.

  9. I have also been digging into what to get for my next PC:

Below prices are also from JIB expect sound card.

    Main Board: socket 1150-AsRock Z87 Pro4= 4300 baht

Power supply: 750W app. 3500 baht (not sure if 750W is enough?depends on grafics card really)

    CPU: Intel i7 4770 = 10800 (I don't want to overclock so no need for a K model)

    Hard disk 1: Samsung 250GB 840EVO SSD= 6650 baht

    Hard disk 2 & 3: 2TB WD sata III 64mb (green) 2 X 3000= 6000 baht

    Software: WIN 8.1 64 bit OEM= 3500 baht

Grafics card: AMD Radeon R9 270X =7800 baht or maybe wait for the new low powered Haswell cards from Nvidia?

    RAM: 2X8 GB= 6000 baht

    CPU cooler: app 1500 baht

    Fan Case= 3000-5000 baht.

    Sound card= app 3000 baht

    Total, just below 60K baht.

I know the grafics card is not the best in the world but will most likely be okay for my use as my PC will be used for many things.

  10. it would be beneficial if you included the following information:

what qualification/s do you have in teach thai as a second language?

what experience do you have as a thai language teacher?

where have you previously/currently do you work as a thai language teacher?

The answers are obvious from the OP. She's just a student so don't expect too much but if you know what you need she may be able to help.

How you know she's a girl?

  11. I would take much more time to learn tones properly, thai is a tonal language and it depends on tone and vowel lenght if you're gonna be understood or not.

If thai is non-tonal language i would probably be fluent already.

Definitely the first piece of advice would be to avoid picking up more and more words if you can't master the tones, because it's a waste of time.

Tones are part of the language and you can't learn any Thai avoiding them.

It's not only a waste of time, but learning Thai words without the correct tones, it can make a great damage, because after awhile (weeks, months, years...) it will be harder to correct your Thai in the proper way.

Better to insist in tones rather than picking up more words ....these can come later...

everything will be easy when you can master the tones in the proper way.

That's exactly a mistake what i made. I was reading thai book like it was written in english(reading without knowing tones).Soon i realized how big mistake i made.Good thing i'm still young and can start learning all over again
